Treatment:
Metronidazole (flagyl)

Life Cycle:
1. Motile (Trophozoites): Pear shaped with two nuclei four
pairs of flagella and suction disk with which attaches to
intestinal wall.
2. Non Motile (Cyst): Thick walled with four nuclei. Each
cyst give rise to two trophozoites during excitation in the
intestinal tract.
Disease
Giardiasis :
Inflammation of duodenal mucosa leading to
malabsorption of fat and protein.
Symptoms:
Diarrhea accompanied by nausea
anorexia without fever.
Treatment:
Metronidazole (Flagyl)
Quinacrine Hydrochloride
Prevention:
Boiled, filtered or Iodine treated water
No prophylactic drug or vaccine is available.
UROGENITAL PROTOZOA
Trichomonas :
Pear shaped with a center nucleus and
four anterior flagella.
It exist only as a motile (trophozoites).
No Cyst form because its a sexually transmitted disease
Found in Vagina and prostate.
Disease:
Trichomonasis:
T. vaginalis often infects the vagina,
where it may cause severe irritation and foul-smelling
discharge.
Symptoms:
Watery, foul-smelling, greenish, vaginal
discharged accompanied by itching and burning.
Treatment:
Metronidazole (Flagyl).
