3.20 Anti-Ice, Rain-System Description

Introduction

The antiice and rain systems include:

automatic ice detection
engine antiice
wing antiice

flight deck window heat

windshield wipers
probe heat.

Automatic Ice Detection System

The automatic ice detection system detects airplane icing in flight. The system
consists of two ice detector probes on the forward fuselage. The system provides
signals to control the engine and wing antiice systems when those systems are in
the automatic mode.
Automatic ice detection is inhibited on the ground.

Engine AntiIce System

The engine antiice system uses engine bleed air to provide engine cowl inlet ice
protection. Engine antiice can be operated in flight or on the ground. The engine
antiice indication EAI is displayed above the EICAS N1 indication when an
engine antiice valve is open. The left and right engines have identical,
independent antiice systems. This allows the remaining system to operate if one
engine is shutdown.

Engine AntiIce System Automatic Operation

In flight, when the ENGINE ANTIICE selector is in AUTO, engine antiice
system operation is automatic. When ice is detected, the engine antiice valves
open and bleed air is supplied to the engine inlet cowl.
When ice is no longer detected, the engine antiice valves close and bleed air is
no longer supplied to the engine inlet cowl.

Engine AntiIce System Manual Operation

On the ground or in flight, when the ENGINE ANTIICE selector is ON, engine
bleed air opens the engine anti-ice valve and bleed air is supplied to the engine
inlet cowl.

Engine AntiIce Leak Detection System

Each engine has an antiice system duct leak detection system. If an antiice duct
leak is detected, the respective engine antiice valve closes.

Wing AntiIce System

The wing antiice system provides bleed air to three midwing leading edge slats
on each wing. Wing antiice is inhibited on the ground. When TAT is above 10
degrees C, wing anti-ice is inhibited for five minutes after takeoff.
The wing antiice annunciation WAI is displayed below the EICAS N1 indication
when a wing antiice valve is open. If a bleed source is unavailable and bleed duct
isolation has not occurred, the isolation valves open automatically to maintain
antiicing to both wings.

Wing AntiIce System Automatic Operation

In flight, when the WING ANTIICE selector is in AUTO, wing antiice system
operation is automatic. When ice is detected, the wing antiice valves open and
bleed air is supplied to the leading edge slats. When ice is no longer detected, the
wing antiice valves close and bleed air is no longer supplied to the slats. If one
wing antiice valve fails closed, the wing antiice system automatically closes the
other valve to prevent asymmetrical wing antiicing.
Automatic wing antiice operation is also inhibited for 10 minutes after takeoff.

Wing AntiIce System Manual Operation

In flight, when the WING ANTIICE selector is ON the wing antiice valve in
each wing opens and bleed air is supplied to the leading edge slats.

Wing AntiIce System Leak Detection System

The bleed duct leak and overheat detection system provides wing anti-ice leak
detection.

Flight Deck Window Heat

All flight deck windows are electrically heated. The forward windows have
exterior surface antiicing, and interior surface antifogging protection. The side
windows have interior surface antifogging protection only.
The WINDOW HEAT switches control heating for all flight deck windows.
A backup antifogging system for the forward windows operates automatically if
the primary window heat system fails.

Windshield Wipers
The forward windows are equipped with independently controlled, twospeed
wipers. When the WIPER selector in OFF, the respective wiper is off and stowed.

Probe Heat
Three pitot probes and two angle of attack probes are electrically heated for
anti-ice protection when either engine is operating.
The total air temperature probe is electrically heated for anti-ice protection in
flight.
