PROPOSED SITE

Reason for choosing the project

While similar looking housing projects and commercial ventures keep hoarding
along the crossroads of various cities. I believe, the architecture of spaces allocated
for cultural and public activity, play an important role in retaining the diverse
identity of a city. For this an architect needs to gain an in depth knowledge of the
origin of the city, its culture, architecture and the various phases of changes that
has undergone with respect to its identity.

For exploring and finding the solutions for the aforementioned issues, thesis
considers the project of Hyderabad Habitat Center, a cultural center combined with
office complex for the organizations working toward the betterment of the habitat.
The project is proposed in the aspiring global city of Hyderabad, India.
- The project being a combination of a cultural center and an office complex
for habitat related organizations, gives an opportunity to rightfully address
both the areas of concern.
- While the cultural center part of the project demands a depiction of the local
culture and heritage, the habitat office complex demands for the project to be
based on sustainable building principles, to set an example.

- As it progresses to be a global city, Hyderabad, needs projects like these to

retain the distinguishing identity of the city.

The Quest of this thesis would lie in

- Understanding the concepts of identity of a place, placelessness and their
relation to architecture. Observing how some architects have tried to reach
the global while trying to retain the local identity.
- Exploring various factors that form the identity of the city, where the project
is located. Analyzing the factors and representing them in built form.

- Studding sustainable building practices for the climate region in which the
project location falls. Implementation of suitable practices in the project to
create a less impactful built environment which would set an example.
The search of this thesis would be to examine how architecture can address the
two main issues of globalization ; universal or monotonous identity of the
global cities and rapid environmental degradation.
