Analysis of Design Principles

1.

What is your advertisement about? What is the product or service being advertised? What
elements (graphics and text) are shown in this ad?

My advertisement is about candy. The product advertised is Twix Bites, though various other
Bites candies can be seen behind it. It seems to use visual hierarchy if the inordinately large text
at the top is of any indication.
2.

What do you notice as you scan the ad using the Z Pattern (along the top, down the
diagonal, and along the bottom of the Z)? Why do think the designer placed those
elements there? Is there an element in the optical center of your ad? If so, why was that
element placed there?

Key slogans were placed along the top and bottom of the advertisement, and the candy is in the
optical center due to it being the main focus of the ad.
3.

How are the elements in your ad aligned (left, right, or centered)?

All of the elements in the ad are centered.

4.

Explain why you think your advertisement symmetrically, asymmetrically, or radial

balanced.

I think the ad is symmetrically balanced, since all the text is centered and the candies are all
arranged in a symmetrical fashion, save for the stray pieces of Twix Bites scattered about.
5.

Is there unity among all of the elements in your ad? Do they work together? If applicable,
are there elements intentionally placed next to other elements (proximity)? Explain why.

The candies are all together, and they work together quite well. The candy was placed near each
other because its introducing Twix to the line-up of bite-sized candy.
6.

Are there any elements (graphics, text, colors, etc.) repeated throughout your ad? What
do you find to be consistent about your advertisement? Explain.

The text is all in red, and it all uses similar-looking fonts. The text is very consistent throughout
the ad.
7.

Is there adequate white space or negative space used throughout your ad? Explain how
and the purpose for the use of white space?

Id say that theres a good amount of negative space in the ad. Said space is used to draw the
viewers attention to the candy.
8.

Explain how the designer used contrast in your ad and what element(s) were emphasized
because of that contrast. Contrast can be created with the use of colors, size, or shapes.

The pale gold background contrasts with the bright red text, bringing emphasis to the text and the
Twix logo.

9.
How are lines being used in your ad? Lines can organize information, provide a frame or
border, create movement, evoke emotion, etc.
A both figurative and literal line was used for the text in the center, with a telephone line
bordering the text. This allows the words within to stand out.
10.

What color theme is used in your ad? Why were those colors used in the ad? How are the
colors being used to evoke emotion, create movement, etc.?

Judging from the amount of warm colors present, Id say that the ad used an analogous color
scheme. The color scheme seems to have been used in order to bring attention to the logo and
text, and therefore the candy.
11.

Can you see texture in your ad? A visual sense of touch. Explain.

I see texture in the pieces of Twix Bites scattered around the ad. This is pretty standard fare for
food advertisements where they enlarge the image of the food to show off the varying textures.
12.

Explain how mass is being used to draw attention to certain elements in your ad? Does
the mass appear larger or smaller than it really is?

The bags of candy are the most massive objects in the ad. Since they are the primary focus, this
makes sense. As a result, the bags of candy appear larger than they actually are. Having seen
bags of this candy in stores before, I know that the actual product is smaller than what the
advertisement would lead you to believe.
13.

What types of shapes (geometric, natural, and abstract) are used in your ad? Why do you
think those types of shapes were used? Explain.

A lot of quadrilaterals were used in the advertisement, from the bags of candy to the way the text
is laid out. This was most likely done in an effort to minimalize clutter. If the text were in a
triangular formation, for example, it would have been too distracting.
