ConservatorybeforeattendingtheParisConservatory.InParishestudiedharmonyandcounterpointwithJean
andNolGallon,compositionwithHenriBusserandhistoryofmusicwithMauriceEmmanuel.Hehasbeen
awardedanumberofawardsthroughhiscareerincludingtheGrandPrixdeRomein1938,UNESCOs
InternationalRostrumofComposersin1955,theGrandCroixdelaLgiondhonneurin2004andtheErnst
vonSiemensMusicPrizein2005.
HisstyleshowsstronginfluencefromMaruiceRavel,ClaudeDebussyandAlbertRousselbuthasaveryindividualelement
toit.Hisattitudetowardsserialismisdifficulttodiscern.Althoughhedidincludesomeelementsofthestyleinhisownmusic,
hecriticisedthosebehindtheideassayingthathedislikedthedogmaandtheauthoritarianismwhichmanifestedthemselves
inthatperiod.Heconsistentlyrefusedtobeassociatedwithonesingleschoolofcompositionalthought.Rather,hemerged
andfusedelementsofearlierstyleswiththoseofthepostSecondWorldWartocreatearatheruniquestyle.Theinfluenceof
jazzcanalsobeheardintheregularuseofpizzicatobassandsyncopation.Hepassedawayon22May2013inParis.
