JULY 2015

OSCA holds Lakbay Aral for LB senior citizens

by Baby Escobin, Office of Senior Citizens Affairs (OSCA)

As part of their Lakbay Aral in

Majayjay, Laguna on July 18, 50
Los Baos senior citizens visited the
Costales Nature Farm, which is known
for its advocacy on organic agriculture.
The activity was sponsored
by the Los Baos Federation of
Senior Citizens (LBFSC), Inc. led
by Florentino Montemayor Jr. in
cooperation with the Office for Senior
Citizens Affairs (OSCA) headed by
Dr. Federico Cruz.
The educational trip aimed to
expose and educate senior citizens
from the different barangays of Los
Baos on organic farming.

The Lakbay Aral participants are eager to learn more about growing organic crops.

On students, spiders, and her legacy

A conversation with the 2015 NAST Young Scientist Awardee for Entomology

by Alyanna Marie Manalang

On July 10, 2015, Dr. Aimee Lynn

Barrion-Dupo bagged the Outstanding
Young Scientist Award for Entomology
during the National Academy of Science and
Technology, Philippines (NAST-PHL) 37th
Annual Scientific Meeting.

Dr. Dupo is an assistant professor

at the Institute of Biological Sciences of
the UPLB College of Arts and Sciences.
In addition to teaching, her long list of
publications serves as proof of her prolific
writing.

her high school teacher. Nakaka-trauma

kasi sa estudyante kapag yung papel puro
red, she explained. And so, she makes
it a point to have a green or purple inked
pen handy when commenting on student
outputs.

Dr. Dupo teaches at the University of

the Philippines Los Baos (UPLB), acts
as one of the curators of the Museum of
Natural History, pursues her research on
spiders all these while taking care of her
two sons.

Being a professor is not without its

challenges. Dr. Dupo also deals with
disappointment every time students fail to
turn in their class requirements. As clich
as it may sound, she is very invested in her
students. Dr. Dupo shared that witnessing
even just one student in a class improve
or bloom would be enough to give her a
great sense of fulfillment for the semester.

Dr. Dupo explained that every

semester, she hopes that her class will
learn from her. She instills in her students
that getting high grades is not as important
as learning how to learn and think, as well
as developing a passion for learning.

With all her achievements, it is

interesting to find out how she manages the
multiple roles that she plays as a professor,
a daughter who shares her passion for
discovering spiders with her parents, and
what she hopes her legacy would be.

She has been noted for avoiding

red ink when marking papers. Dr. Dupo
shared that she developed the habit from

She had always wanted to be a high

school teacher. Growing up in Los Baos
with her mother devoted to teaching in
UPLB, it came naturally to Dr. Dupo to
pursue the path of education both as a
student and as an educator.

She applied for a teaching post in her

high school alma mater but she was not
able to secure that post. She then worked
as a research associate in the UPLB
National Institute of Microbiology and
Biotechnology (BIOTECH).

Ang mga batayan sa pagpili o criteria

for judging ay itinalaga ng bawat komite
angkop sa kanilang kategorya.

For the love of spiders...

She pursued her masters degree in

Entomology, worked at the Museum of
Natural History (MNH) as an extension
specialist, and later on secured a UPLB
teaching post and handled Biology 1
(General Biology I) classes.
These days, Dr. Dupo sits as one of
the curators at the Entomological Museum
of the UPLB Museum of Natural History
alongside her father Dr. Alberto Barrion.
Both Dr. Dupo and her parents are
entomology majors and spider enthusiasts.
They, as a family, have been working for
a long time to publish a reference book
and pictorial guide of spider species in the
Philippines.
Teaching took up most of Dr. Dupos
time, making it challenging to set aside
time to work on the book with her parents.
She regrets not having completed the book
before her mothers death in 2009. Dr.
Dupo and her father had since promptly
worked on the book and the research is
still on-going.
The said publication aims to document
all spider species in the Philippines and
will add another entry to Dr. Dupos long
list of publications.
In 2013, she was recognized as the
UPLB Outstanding Junior Researcher
because of her numerous publications.
Among all the researches she conducted,
Dr. Dupo shared that her first research
her undergraduate thesis on taxonomy
remains closest to her heart.
Dr. Dupo hopes that there will come a
time that there will be more Filipino data
in her researches. She further hopes that
the youth would not just go with the trends
and to rediscover nature. Nagpo-focus
masyado sa robotics today, when even in
our backyard, you can explore nature.
Despite her numerous achievements,
what Dr. Dupo wants is to simply be
remembered as a good person.

Leren Mae Bautista

L B S

H O M E G R O W N

by Ma. Roxanne Fatima Rolle

Los Baos is now an address of royalty as recently crowned

beauty queen proudly calls it her home.
Los Baos is home for me this is according to Leren Mae
Magnaye Bautista, this years Mutya ng Pilipinas Asia Pacific
International 2015.
A local of Brgy. Anos, Bautista was also crowned Miss Los
Baos 2013. Now, she returns with the coveted Mutya title along
with several awards from the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2015 coronation
night last August 2 at the Newport Performing Arts Theater, Resorts
World Manila.
Besting 29 other contestants, Bautista also snagged four more
awards: Best in Swimsuit, Best in Long Gown, Mutya ng Sheridan
Beach Resort and Spa, and Mutya ng Hana.
Yet despite her worlds glitz and glamor, Ms. Leren remains
humble and accommodating as she indulged the Los Baos Times
with her thoughts on bringing home the crown, being a Lagunense,
and being part of LB at 400.

M U T YA
On bringing home the crown
Los Baos Times (LBT): What made you decide to join
Mutya ng Pilipinas 2015?
Leren Mae Bautista (LMB): Actually, I wasnt that prepared
when I joined this pageant. My body wasnt in good physique
back then. My only goal is to gain experience of a national
pageant. Fortunately, I won the title!

LBT: When your name was announced as the winner, what

were the first few thoughts that came to mind?
LMB: Thank you Lord! were the words that came in my
mind. I wasnt expecting for my name to be called. I am
already very happy with the experiences Ive had at that
moment.

LBT: What are your plans now that you are the new Mutya
ng Pilipinas Asia Pacific International?
LMB: To do my responsibilities as Mutya ng Pilipinas Asia
Pacific International in promoting culture and tourism. To
travel the whole Philippines to know the different cultures
and tourist spots we have, thus, help them in promoting them.

LBT: How are you preparing for the international pageant on

December? If you bring home the title, how can you leverage
the crown to share your personal advocacy in the province,
country, and the world?
LMB: Well, as of now, we travel to know more about the
culture and tourism of the Philippines so when we compete in
our international pageant, we will know how to promote the
country. If Id bring home the crown, Id use it to promote
tourism and natural beauty.

On being a Laguena
LBT: How does it feel growing up in our town?
LMB: It felt like home. Los Baos is home for me.

LBT: Whats your favorite place or delicacy in Los Baos or

Laguna?
LMB: Buko pie!!! I LOVE BUKO PIE!

LBT: In our research, we found out that you have often been
invited as Reyna Elena in several barangays in Los Baos
(i.e. Brgy. Timugan and Brgy. Anos). Can you please share
your experience being a frequent muse in Los Baos?
LMB: Though this could mean long walks, I never hesitate to
accept their invitation. I always feel overwhelmed when they
invite me.

LBT: As a marketing graduate, what facet of Los Baos or

Laguna would you further promote and why?
LMB: Promote more of Lagunas tourism and culture as to
let the world see how beautiful Laguna is.

Ang natatagong yaman...

LBT: Apart from being a responsible

individual, family member, and citizen
of the community, what other quality/
ies of being a Laguena do you value and
why?
LMB: Hospitable and conservative.
We, Lagunenses, are very welcoming
and accommodating that tourists love
returning back to our province. We are
also still holding on to the traditional
values that weve gained and that I think
sets us apart from others.

Los Baos at 400

LBT: Looking back, what aspect of our
towns 400 years of history are you most
proud of?
LMB: Los Baos as the largest science
community in South East Asia! Though
Los Baos is just a small town, it has
contributed much in terms of scientific
achievement, specifically on Agriculture.

LBT: What aspect of Los Baos do

you wish to be further developed in the
coming years?
LMB: Los Baos, not just an academic
and special nature and science city,
should develop more of its tourist
destination as to promote how beautiful
Los Baos is.

LBT: What is your message to your

fellow Los Baos locals regarding the
Quadricentennial?
LMB: Its been 400 years of building
names! Lets continue supporting our
municipality and our kababayans!

LBT: What is your message to your

supporters?
LMB: To those who believed [in me]
and supported me, many thanks to you!
Please continue to support me as I vie
for the crown for Miss Tourism Queen
of the Year on December. This is for all
of you!

na rin ng Department of Interior and Local Government, Department of Tourism,

Alviars Lake Resort o Yammy
Dra. Sy Private Resort
Rio Azul Resort (private)
Myna Andirs Resort (private)
Ligaya Millanes (private)
Tropical Island Management (private)
My Place Resort (private)
Balai ni Inday Lakeside Villa Resort
Lareso Lakeside Resort and Spa, Inc.

KALIKASAN

Pagbabago sa temperatura sa Laguna (PAGASA Projected Change in Seasonal Mean Temperature (C) using
PRECIS [A1B Scenario])
Pagbabago sa rainfall o tubig-ulan (PAGASA Projected Change in Seasonal Rainfall using PRECIS [A1B
Scenario])
Dalas ng matinding init o labis na pag-ulan (PAGASA Projected Frequency of Extreme Events in (2020)
2006-2035)

anyong tubig. Ang isa ay kinikilalang
pinakamalaking lawa sa buong Pilipinas
ang Laguna de Bay. Ang isa naman ay isa
ring lawa na hindi ganoon katanyag ngunit
ang angking katangian nito ay maihahanay
rin sa naunang nabanggit. Ito ay ang Lawa
ng Tadlac.

Katangian
Sa tinatayang lalim na 330 metro
at lawak na 24.74 ektarya, ang Lawa
ng Tadlac ay kinikilalang pangunahing
atraksyon sa Brgy. Tadlac. Ang paligid nito
ay kulay luntian dahil sa mga halamang
nakatanim sa palibot dito. Kadalasang

Diyan
kami naigib nung araw eh. Kasi hindi
pa developed yan nung araw. Diyan
kami nakuha ng inumin, lahat ng gamit
namin ng tubig, sabi ni Rodolfo Pua,
isang residente ng Brgy. Tadlac.

Mga Kwentong Lawa

Sa kabila ng angking ganda ng
Lawa ng Tadlac, mayroon din itong
makulay na kasaysayan at mga istorya
na nagpasalin-salin na sa maraming
henerasyon at ang mga ito ay nagsilbi
ring daan upang makilala pa ang
nasabing lawa.
Ang Lawa ng Tadlac ay kilala rin
sa tawag na Alligator Lake. Ito ay dahil
sa paniniwalang pinamumugaran ito ng
mga buwaya noong panahon ng mga
Kastila. Ito ay pinangalanang Laguna
de los Caimanes o Lake of Alligators.
Ngunit ayon sa ilang mga residente,
ang dagatan, na lokal na tawag nila
sa kanilang lawa, ay hindi naman daw
totoong tinitirahan ng mga buwaya. Ito
ay kwento lamang. Ngunit, may ilan din
na nagsasabing totoong mayroong mga

buwaya dito noong unang panahon.

Naubos na lamang ang mga ito noong
dumating ang mga Kastila.
Isa rin sa mga nakakamangha,
o para sa ilan ay nakakatakot, ay
ang kwento tungkol sa diwatang
di umanoy nananahan sa Lawa ng
Tadlac at nangunguha ng mga taong
naglalangoy sa tubig ng lawa. Para sa
ibang residente, itoy pinaniniwalaan
nilang totoo ngunit ang iba naman ay
nagsasabing kathang-isip lamang ang
kwentong ito.

Turismo sa Lawa
Dahil sa dumaraming bilang ng
mga turista mula sa ibat-ibang lugar
na dumarayo sa Brgy. Tadlac upang
matunghayan ang ganda ng nasabing
lawa, naisipan ng lokal na pamahalaan
na gawin itong atraksyon para sa mga
turista.
Sa pamamahala ng Punong
Barangay na si Juan Marvin Bautista
at ng pangulo ng Tadlac Lake Nature
Conservation Association, Inc. na si
Matilde Erasga, inilunsad ang Tadlac
Lake Nature Park noong Abril 2015.
