Assignment 1: Information Literacy

2.
All schools shut down in Augusta County, Virginia, over Islam homework, is the title
of an article that deals with a current look at the ethics of involving religion in
education. The Article discloses that a middle school teacher, LaPorte, was teaching
a unit on world religions and handed out an assignment to her class to copy a
section of Islamic calligraphy. The assignment was aimed at helping the students
understand the complexity of calligraphy and Islam. However, the section of
calligraphy that was to be copied was actually the Islamic statement of faith.

Course in 'neutral' Way: Supreme Court." LifeSiteNews. Life Site, 19 Mar. 2015. Web. 07 Jan. 2016

C) Run the same search (using the same keywords) on two different search engines. Identify
the search engines you used. (1 point).
The second search engine used was Yahoo.
D) Create a table to compare the results from the two search engines was one search
engine better than
the other, why, how. How many search results did you receive? Etc. (2 points)

Search
engine:
Google

How long for

results
0.42 seconds

How many
results
87,400,000

Yahoo

N/A

147 million

Comments:
Both search engines were fast in acquiescing results, however there were some
noticeable differences.
1. Both engines had results with a check next to the links if the link was safe,
but google also had a second check mark if the site was safe.
2. Both had results related to the key words, but Yahoo had links more
applicable to the research I wanted to do.
3. Neither of the pages produced any visual images to accompany the
results.
4. Finally, Googles results page did not list any ads, whereas Yahoo results
page did.
Overall, both sites are efficient and despite the fact that Yahoo came up with more
results, generally I would still choose Google as a search engine four out of five
times. It is easy to navigate, the results satisfy my inquiries and it shows me what is
and is not safe to follow.

4. A) Time when was it written? Has it been updated?

Susan Galdieri
Assignment 1: Information Literacy
Yes, this article does relate to my topic, but with explanation. It shows a
reaction to what happens when a different type of ethic/moral is applied to a simple
task in a public school.
C) Authority who is/are the author(s)? Are they
qualified to write about this topic? How do you know?
The Author of this article is a digital news desk editor for CNN. As far as his
qualifications in terms of working for CNN, is credentials are not listed. In regards to
this article, there does not seem to be a need for deep research for this article,
simply reporting.
D) Accurate is the information trustworthy? Is it
supported by evidence? Has it been tested for accuracy? As far as accuracy
goes, it is the same information found on other websites in regards to the same
story.
E) Purpose why was it written, to inform, sell,
persuade? Is there a bias or is the material objective?

The article was written to inform the public about an incident involving Islam. I
think this Article definitely has bias against Islam. Many Americans, at this point,
associate Islam with terrorists and terrorism. This article not only demonstrated a
perhaps embellished reaction from parents and made a middle school teacher out
to be something she was not. The article, and dare I say the author/ CNN was
playing the devils advocate.

5. A) Ease of access:
The Scholarly journals were easy to access after understanding how to
maneuver through the library database. It took some direction and
assistance. Once I learned how to select the correct database, finding
scholarly articles was very easy. The internet articles were very easy to find,
but did not also match the topic one hundred percent. There bits and pieces
that touched on the topic of ethics in schools.
B) Timeliness:
All the scholarly journals were published recently. The database gave you the
option to select what years you, the user, wanted to pull information from. This
helped because I knew that the information I was using was not only recent, but
supported by educational research. One of the internet articles was recent within
thirty days, the other was not. The second article was from within the past few
years, but because culture, society and information change rapidly I would not
consider the secondary article recent.

C) Authority:

Susan Galdieri
Assignment 1: Information Literacy
The scholarly articles were written by scholars and are supported by research and
collaboration and henceforth are trusted access points of authority. The internet
sources often times do not require as much accountability of the authors. I also
believe there is much more bias in the newspaper articles, because newspapers
sway with the government; that is to say they must lean one way or the other with
politics and there is a lack of neutrality.
