The Lion King

Written by Irene Mecchi and Jonathan Roberts
Music by Elton John, Lyrics by Tim Rice

Dawn. The African Plain.

A call is heard (beginning of Circle of Life). Animals (around the stage and
auditorium- except Scar) become alert and start looking for the origin of the
sound.
Narrator slowly ascends stairs (stage left).
Circle of Life
Animals continue to walk towards the soloist on the stairs, circle around
looking up.
By 2m20s, Mufasa (with baby Simba), Rafiki, Zazu, and Sarabi are on stairs
surveying land and animals.
At end of song, Rafiki presents baby Simba to the other animals who make
their animal noises in appreciation.

Scene 1: Scar, Zazu, Mufasa

Lights up on stage right to find Scar lounging under a tree, playing with a
mouse.
SCAR: Lifes not fair. Yes, you seeI shall never be king. And youshall
never see another day. Adieu!
Scar dangles the mouth above his mouth but before he can drop it in, Zazu
enters and interrupts.
ZAZU: Didnt your mother ever tell you not to play with your food?
SCAR: (unenthusiastically) Oh Zazu, what do you want?

ZAZU: Im here to announce that King Mufasa is on his way. And youd
better have a good excuse for missing the ceremony this morning.
SCAR: (tossing the mouse aside) Now look, Zazu. Youve made me lose my
appetite.
ZAZU: Youll lose more than that when the King gets through with you. Hes
as mad as a hippo who swallowed a hornets nest!
Mufasa enters, unseen by Scar.
SCAR: (with sarcasm) Ooooooo. I quiver with fear.
MUFASA: (scolding) Scar!
SCAR: Why if it isnt my big brother, descending from on high to mingle
with the commoners.
MUFASA: Sarabi and I didnt see you at the presentation of Simba. Is
anything wrong?
SCAR: (insincere) That was today? Oh, I feel simply awfulMust have
slipped my mind.
ZAZU: Yes, well as slippery as your mind isas the Kings brother, you
should have been first in line.
SCAR: I was first in line until the little hairball was born.
MUFASA: That hairball is my son and your future king!
SCAR: (sarcastic) I shall practice my curtsy. (Turns to walk away).
MUFASA: Dont turn your back on me, Scar!
SCAR: (turns back around quickly) Oh, no, Mufasa. Perhaps YOU shouldnt
turn your back on me.
MUFASA: Is that a challenge?
SCAR: (fakely sweet) A challenge? Oh, I wouldnt dream of it. (Serious) As
far as brains go, I got the lions share. But when it comes to strength,
Im afraid I got the shallow end of the gene pool.

Scar Exits.
ZAZU: Theres one in every family, sire. Two in mine actually. And they
always manage to ruin special occasions.
As they walk:
MUFASA: What am I going to do with him?
ZAZU: Hed make a very handsome rug!
Zazu exits. Mufasa lies down to sleep. Sarabi comes on stage to join him.
Lights dim.

Scene 2: Simba, Mufasa, Sarabi, Zazu

Dimmed lights fade up. Simba, now a full-grown cub, comes running in.
Nudges father.
SIMBA: Hey, Dad! Wake up! Dad!
Mufasa doesnt respond. Simba keeps nudging him.
SIMBA: Dad-dad-dad-dad-dad-dad-dad
SARABI: (to Mufasa) Your son is awake.
MUFASA: Before sunrise, hes your son.
Simba backs up and runs at full speed, head-butting Mufasa.
SIMBA: You promised!
MUFASA: (slightly lifting his head) Okay, okay. Im up. Im up.
SIMBA: Alright! (runs to other side of stage)
Mufasa puts his head back down with a snore.
SARABI: Hon-ey!
MUFASA: (finally getting up) Okay! Okay!

Mufasa and Simba climb Pride Rock.
MUFASA: (gesturing) Simba, look. Everything the light touches is our
kingdom.
SIMBA: (in awe) Wow!
MUFASA: A kings time as ruler rises and falls like the sun. One day the
sun will set on my time here and will rise with you as the new king.
SIMBA: You mean all this will be mine?
MUFASA: Everything.
SIMBA: (in awe) Everything the light touches. (scans to see whats in the
light) What about that shadowy place?
MUFASA: Thats beyond our borders. You must never go there Simba.
SIMBA: But I thought a king can do whatever he wants.
MUFASA: Theres a lot more to being king than getting your way all the
time.
SIMBA: (wide eyed) Theres more??
MUFASA: Well Simba(animals leap in front of them, some are grazing to
the side) Everything you see exists together in a delicate balance. As king,
you need to understand that balance and respect all creatures. From the
crawling ant to the leaping antelope.
SIMBA: But dad, dont we eat antelope?
MUFASA: Yes Simba, but let me explain. We are all part of a cycle. A circle
of life. We all need each other to survive.
As Simba considers this, Zazu flies in.
ZAZU: Good morning, Sire!
MUFASA: Good morning, Zazu.

MUFASA: Fire away!
The Morning Report
A mole pops up from the ground
MOLE: News from underground! (he whispers in Zazus ear)
ZAZU: (alarmed, to Mufasa) Sire! Hyenas! In the Pride Lands!
MUFASA: (exiting urgently) Zazu, take Simba home.
SIMBA: Aw, Dad, cant I come?
MUFASA: No, son. (exits)
SIMBA: I never get to go anywhere.
ZAZU: Oh, young master, one day you will be king. Then you can do
whatever you want.
SIMBA: Thats not what my dad told me.
ZAZU: Well, let old Zazu set you straight. (They begin to walk off). Youre
going to have it all. Youll be Head Honcho, Top Banana, The Grand
Fromage!

Scene 3: Simba, Scar (Scars home)

SIMBA: (runs onto stage to Scar) Hey, Uncle Scar! Guess what!
SCAR: (uninterested) I despise guessing games.
SIMBA: Im gonna be king of Pride Rock!
SCAR: (underwhelmed) Oh, goodie.
SIMBA: My Dad just showed me the whole kingdom! And Im gonna rule it
all!

(turns his back on Simba)
SIMBA: Hey, Uncle Scar, when Im king, whatll that make you?
SCAR: A monkeys uncle.
SIMBA: (laughing) Youre so weird.
SCAR: You have no idea. (pause) So, your father showed you the whole
kingdom, did he?
SIMBA: Everything!
SCAR: He didnt show you whats beyond that rise at the northern border?
SIMBA: Well, no. (disappointed) He said I couldnt go there.
SCAR: And hes absolutely right. Its far too dangerous. Only the bravest of
lions go there.
SIMBA: (defensive) Well, Im brave. Whats out there?
SCAR: Im sorry Simba, I just cant tell you.
SIMBA: Why not?
SCAR: (putting his paw on Simbas head) Simba, Simba. Im only looking
out for the well-being of my favorite nephew.
SIMBA: (removing Scars hand) Yeah right. Im your only nephew.
SCAR: All the more reason for me to be protective. An elephant graveyard
is no place for a young prince. (glances at Simba to make sure he heard.
Simba looks shocked) Oops.
SIMBA: An elephant what? (awed) Whoa!
SCAR: Oh dear. Ive said too much. I suppose youd have found out sooner
or later. You being so clever and all. Just do me one favor. Promise me
youll never visit that dreadful place.
SIMBA: (dishonestly) No problem.

SIMBA: Come on! I just heard about this really cool place!
NALA: What is this really cool place?
SIMBA: Umm(lying) around the waterhole.
NALA: (unimpressed) The waterhole? Whats so great about the waterhole?
SIMBA: (through teeth) Ill show you when we get there.
NALA: (starting to understand that Simba has another idea but doesnt
want the moms to know) Ooohhh. (beat) Mom, can I go?
SARAFINA: Alone? I dont know. Sarabi, what do you think?
SARABI: Well
SIMBA/NALA: (together) Pleeeeeeease?
SARABI: Well, its alright with me. (Simba and Nala look excited) As long as
Zazu goes with you. (Simba and Nala freeze, deflated)
SIMBA: Not Zazu!

NALA: (stage whisper to Simba) So where are we really going?
SIMBA: An elephant graveyard.
NALA: (A little too loud) Wow!
SIMBA: Shhhh. (indicating towards Zazu)
NALA: Right. How are we going to ditch the dodo?
Simba grins and pulls Nala into a huddle to discuss how to get rid of Zazu.
ZAZU: (misinterpreting the situation) Just look at you two! Little seed of
romance blossoming in the Savannah! Your parents will be thrilled. What
with your being betrothed and all.
SIMBA: Be-what?
ZAZU: You and Nala are betrothed! Intended! Affianced!
NALA: (looking at Simba and finding he also has no idea what Zazu is
talking about) Meaning?
ZAZU: One day, you two are going to be married!
SIMBA: (skeptical) Im going to marry her?
ZAZU: (sarcastically) Nome. Yes her you chucklehead!
SIMBA: Yuck!
NALA: Ewwww!

Its a tradition.
SIMBA: Well, when Im king, thatll be the first thing to go.
ZAZU: Not so long as Im around!
SIMBA: In that case, youre fired.
ZAZU: Nice try. But only the king can do that.
NALA: Well, hes the future king.
SIMBA: So you have to do what I tell you.
ZAZU: Not yet I dont you puny puff. And with an attitude like that, Im
afraid you will be a pretty pathetic king, indeed!
SIMBA: Not the way I see it!

NALA: Gotcha!
SIMBA: Hey! Let me up!
She lets him up but he tries to attack her again (playfully) and pushes her
into a huge elephant skull. When they both realize what they have hit, they
gasp!
SIMBA/NALA: (together) Whoooa!
SIMBA: This is it! We made it!
NALA: Wow! Its really creepy.
SIMBA: Yeah, isnt it great?!
NALA: (starting to sound worried) We could get in big trouble.
SIMBA: (gleefully) I know.
NALA: I wonder if its brains are still in there.
SIMBA: Come on, lets go check.
Simba is about to climb into one of the skeletons eye sockets when Zazu
flies in.
ZAZU: Wrong, my little royal pain. The only checking-out you will do will
be to check out of here.
SIMBA: (whining) Oh, man
ZAZU: Were way beyond the boundary of the Pride Lands.

From behind the elephant skull, the laughter is echoed by hyenas.
ED/SHENZI/BANZAI: Hee-hee-hee-hee
Simba and Nala are suddenly afraid and cling to each other. The hyenas
slink out of the skulls eyes. They start to circle the cubs.
SHENZI: Well, well, well, Banzai. What have we got here?
BANZAI: (toying with them) HmmmI dont know Shenzi. What do you

ED: Hee-hee-hee
BANZAI: Just what I was thinkin. A trio of trespassers who dont belong

ZAZU: And quite by accident, let me assure you. A simple navigational

BANZAI: Hey! Who you callin oopid-stay?
ZAZU: Oh, my-my-my. Look at the sun. Time to go! (again, he tries to lead

The hyenas start to argue amongst themselves, giving the lion cubs and
Zazu the chance to slip away.

The hyenas run towards the wildebeests, causing them to start running,
creating a stampede. They are running right towards Simba, who cant get
back on the rock fast enough, so he runs to a tree.
From the other side of the stage, Zazu, who is with Mufasa, notices the
wildebeests start to move.
ZAZU: Look Sire, the herd is on the move.
MUFASA: (looking) Thats odd.
Scar emerges calling out to Mufasa, pretending (convincingly) to be
alarmed.
SCAR: Mufasa! Quick! Stampede! Simbas down there!
MUFASA: (alert and alarmed) Simba?
ZAZU: Ill fly ahead, Sire!
Mufasa has already run off so he doesnt see that Scar steps on Zazus tail
feathers, not allowing him to fly ahead. Simba can now be heard calling for
help. He is clinging to a tree branch.

SCAR: Simba, what have you done?

Scene 10: Simba, Timon, Pumbaa

Simba is now in a jungle. He is very tired and walking slowly because he
has come a long way. Every now and then, he looks over his shoulder.
Eventually, he gets too tired, so he sits down to rest and falls asleep.
Timon and Pumbaa enter. They are dividing bugs between them to eat.
They arent looking where theyre going and Pumbaa stumbles into Simba.
He looks down in interest. He looks particularly hard at his claws and his
teeth. Timon is still looking at his bugs and has not noticed Simba.
PUMBAA: (to Timon) Uh, Timon. Ya better look at this.
Timon now notices Simba
TIMON: (taking a closer look) Well, what do we have here?
PUMBAA: (cautiously) I think its alive.

Nala is surprised, wondering how this lion knows who she is.
SIMBA: Its me- Simba!
