Name:
John England
Assignment:
Observation #4
Background Information
Adolescents Age: 17 Years Old
Fictitious Name:
Logan
Location:
This interview was on November 16th 2015 at 5:30, in Logans living
room.
Brief Description: There was me and Logan in one room and Logans other younger
siblings in another room watching TV.
Physical Development
Logan looks physically active, and his favorite subject in school is physical
education. He weighs about 160 pounds and is about 71 inches tall, which means his
BMI is 22.3. This is a good BMI with a normal weight.
When talking to Logan I noticed the amount of acne he had on his face.
According to the book, (Berger, 2014, Pg: 326), adolescents skin is more prone to acne
than earlier ages. So this is common for Logan and other adolescents to have acne. I
also noticed the amount of facial hair Logan has. He has a lot more than I remember,
and he mentioned to me that he shaves now about every other day. So hair is also more
prone to grow in other places during the adolescent ages.
Logan mentioned that he is doing online school at the time, and has a job at a
supermarket. I asked him how his sleep schedule is arranged and what time he needs
to wake up for work, and he said that he doesnt start work until 12:00, lunchtime, and
then he gets off at about 8:00. He mentioned that he does school for about two hours
every morning on his personal computer just before work. According to the book,
(Berger, 2014, Pg: 322), later start of school improves adolescents learning. This is
being practiced by Logans schedule with his school and work.
Cognitive Development
When talking with Logan, he seemed to really think about himself. According to
the book, (Berger, 2014, Pg: 333), many adolescents think about themselves as being
superior. I asked Logan: If you were to change anything about your body, what would
you change. He mentioned he wouldnt change anything because he thinks a lot about
him and how cool he is.
I personally would not want to go to an online school, but on the other hand
Logan would. He said he loves it. According to the book, (Berger, 2014, Pg: 339), there
isnt one better school structure to follow, it just depends on what the student feels
comfortable about doing. Logan mentions that with the practice of saving his money,
which is independence that he gained from his parents, he is able to make a lot more

money while doing high school so that he could pay for college a lot faster and easier.
He also mentions, although Im making some money, my school doesnt have any
hands on activities with other people, which can encourage social development.
Social/Emotional Development
Like mentioned earlier, Logan doesnt interact socially with other people at
school, but because of his religious identity and attending church, he still has many
social friends he can hang out with. This is the same religion his parents participate in
and he still follows this religion today. According to the book, (Berger, 2014, Pg: 357),
few adolescents totally reject religion if they grew up with it.
When asked what is your political identity, Logan didnt know what the two sides
were focusing on. I personally didnt either until this year in U.S. government when we
talked about them. This is evidence that Logan doesnt care about political events, and
according to the book, (Berger, 2014, Pg: 358), this is very common in all of the
adolescent ages.
