I choose to do CLPNA competency category
K-3-1. K is Maternal / Newborn Care. The subcategory 3 is knowledge and assessment of labor. The number 1 is demonstrate knowledge of stages of labor and delivery: stage 1 labor onset to full cervix dilation, stage 2 full cervix dilation to delivery of baby, stage 3 delivery of baby to expulsion of placenta, stage 4 expulsion of placenta to afterbirth recovery One significant learning experience Ive had in this course related to the CLPNA competency is the PowerPoint and examples we have received in class. Going to class and receiving real life examples from the instructor have helped me to completely understand the stages a woman will go through during the labor and delivery process. Also watching the video that was played in class helped put the theory we learned into a real life situation. I learned the specifics of what happens during each stage of a womans labor. The first stage occurs from the onset of strong, regular contractions until the cervix is completely open. The second stage is from full dilation of the cervix until the baby is born. The third stage is from the delivery of the baby until the placenta is delivered. And the fourth and final stage is for 24 hours after the birth. Each stage is all very important to ensure that both the baby and mom are healthy throughout the process. I would only rate myself as fair in this competency category at this moment. I have not yet been able to apply it within my own nursing practice, but I do understand the theory behind it. I believe that once I get an opportunity to work with children, my rating in this competency could go up to a good and eventually reach the excellent level.
DESCRIBE HOW YOU WILL APPLY
THIS LEARNING IN YOUR CURRENT AND FUTURE NURSING PRACTICE
It will be important to be able to apply this
knowledge whether I end up working on a maternity unit or not. Knowing the stages of labor and delivery will be important as pregnant women can be on a variety of units in the hospital at different stages of their pregnancy. For example, working on an orthopedic unit, you may get a third trimester pregnant women with a broken leg. It would be important to know the stages, especially the first, just in case she went into pre term labor.
