California Content Standard:
Reading Comprehension: Structural Features of Informational Materials
2.1 Identify text that uses sequence or other logical order
2.2 Respond to who, what, when, where, and how questions.
Writing Strategies: Organization and Focus
1.1 Use letters and phonetically spelled words to write about experiences, stories, people,
objects, or events.

Objective:
Given a list of vocabulary words, students will be able to sequence the order of events by writing
their morning routine with a 100% accuracy using the words First, Next, Then, Last.
Set:
First, I will state the objective myself and then have the class repeat it with me as a class. The
lesson will begin by checking my students background knowledge on the book, The Very
Hungry Caterpillar. I will then proceed to start the lesson. Boys and girls, today I will read to
you a book called The Very Hungry Caterpillar. The lesson will then move on to me asking the
students what happened in the story. Can you tell me what happened First in the story? What
happened to the caterpillar Next? and so on. I will then move on further to my lesson and go
over some of the major points I want them to learn.

Input/Procedures:
1.) First, state the lesson, standard, and the objective to the students. I will introduce the
objective to the students and then they will say it out loud as a class.

2.) Before starting the lesson, I will start off by checking my students prior knowledge of
the book, The Very Hungry Caterpillar.
3.) I will then move on to reading the book, and stopping throughout the story, pointing out
important events that happen in the story.
4.) After I am done reading the book, I will review with the students what happened in the
story.
5.) I will make sure to review with them events that happened in the story while using
sequencing words such as, First, Next, Then, Last
6.) I will ask the students to work together and individually to tell me what happened in the
story from beginning to end.
7.) After reinforcement of events in the story, I will move on to explaining to the students
how certain routines happen in a sequence.
8.) I will share with them my daily routine in the morning when getting ready for work. This
will be written on a poster board, but will be out of order.
9.) Students will then, have to come up and connect the correct sequence word with the
correct morning routine.
10.) After they are done matching the routine with the word, I will show them my routine on
the poster board in the correct sequence of events and we will read it together.
11.) I will then give students a worksheet in which they must write their own morning
routine using sequence of events.
12.) We will then review the objective as a class and review what we worked on today.
13.) To end the lesson, they will be given a worksheet in which they must identify the
pictures of an event, with the correct sequencing word. After this, if there is time students
will go over what answers they go in the worksheet and we will have finished the days
lesson.
Guided Practice:
This will take place during the WE DO phase of the lesson. I will start off by reviewing what
happens in the story I read to them. Boys and girls, can you all tell me what happened from
beginning to end? I will then review with them what happened from beginning to end. First,
the caterpillar was very hungry and started to eat anything he saw. I will explain to them how
there is a sequence or order in which stories are told and what are some of the certain words that
are used to retell a story. They will then be given a worksheet in which all sequence words must
be used. Throughout the lesson, I will constantly be asking questions to make sure that they are
getting the lesson. After reading the book and review what happened, I will share with them my
daily routine and get them involved more in the lesson. During this part of the lesson, they must
go up front and try and match my morning routine to the correct sequencing word. After wards,
they must write their own morning routine in which I will be constantly reminding them to use
their sequencing words. Boys and girls do not forget to use the words, First, Next, Then, Last.
They will share their story if there is time, and I will make sure to correct them if any words is
misused.

Assessment Plan/ Independent Practice:

Informal assessments will take place throughout the lesson. I will regularly monitor the students
work to check their understanding of the lesson, as well as provide immediate corrective
feedback. After reviewing the book with the students, they will have the opportunity to
participate in my lesson by matching the correct morning routine to the correct sequencing word.
Students will be responsible for writing their morning routine while using sequencing words
First, Next, Then, Last. At the end of the lesson, they will be given a worksheet in which they
must match the corresponding pictures with the correct sequencing words.
There will be no independent practice but rather the students will have to match the correct
sequencing words, with a routine I will provide to them. At the end of the lesson, they will
receive a worksheet which I will test how well they understood the lesson.

Adaptations/Modifications for English Language Learners: In order to assure that my lesson

plan is clear enough for those students who are English learners, I must assure to go over
vocabulary with them. I will do so by descriptively explaining to them the vocabulary and each
concept of the lesson plan. Also, I will use real life experience and situations to give them a
better understanding of the concepts being taught, so that their language is not a barrier to
understanding the lesson. A good example of this is when I used the daily morning routine. It ties
in with the sequence of events concept my lesson plan is about, as well as using real life events
to make it easier for them to understand.
Closure:
We will end the lesson by going over the objective. Today we learned to sequence the order of
events by writing our morning routine by using the words First, Next, Then, Last with 100%
accuracy. After this, we will move on to reviewing the sequence of events that happened in the
book, and the morning routine. Students will then be given a worksheet in which they must
match the pictures, with the corresponding sequencing vocabulary word. If there is time, we will
quickly go over what answers students got.

Reflection:

Going into this lesson, I had certain expectations for myself and for my students. After my
lesson, I felt like I had not put my best lesson together because my lesson didnt meet my desired
expectations. However, after discussing with Jose, I came to realize that I may have been too
harsh to jump to conclusions. Both of my students participated and worked up to their level of
knowledge. They both did an awesome job in participating and giving me the kind of feedback
they could give me. Both of my students, are at very different levels of knowledge, but they both
worked at their level and seemed to understand the lesson little by little. However, I do believe I
can definitely incorporate a lot more hands on activities in which I get students more engaged
and even entertained to the point where I will have their full attention the majority of the time. I
plan on incorporating a lot more activities so that my students from the beginning of the lesson,
are engaged and ready to learn. Not only engaged, but more interested in learning what the days
lesson will consist of. I will continue to use real life experiences to connect my lesson back to
my students because they really seemed to enjoy that. I plan on coming up with more fun
activities and using new and different strategies that may not be my strong point, so that I may
learn more as a future educator. Overall, I felt the lesson was not such a disaster as I had thought
at first, but that there is definitely room to improve on and have more fun with my lessons.
