WejustreceivedtheresultsfromtheStateofNevadaDepartmentofEducation.Weare
eagertoanalyzetheresultsastheywillhelptogiveusinformationonhowtobest
supportourstudentsandschoolsinreachingthenewandmorerigorousNevada
AcademicContentStandards.

Thenewassessment,SBAC,isbasedonthesenewstandards.SBACresultsprovide
informationonhowstudents,schools,anddistrictsareprogressingonthenew
standards,anditshould,provideimportantinformationastowheresupportsare
neededforstudentsandschools.

Thenewassessmentistoofundamentallydifferentfromtheoldassessmentstomake
anyreliablecomparisonsbetweenoldscoresandnew.

Itisimportanttoknowthisyearisaveryroughbaseline.Duetothestatewidetesting
irregularity,allstudentsinthestatedidnotcompletethenewassessment.

Assessmentsmustbeadministeredinawaythatisfairtoallstudents.Thiswasthefirst
yearofcomputeronlinetestingforthiskindofassessment,andthereweresome
glitches.Wedonotknowtowhatextenttheassessmentwasadministeredreliablytoall
students.

Aboveall,assessmentslikethisshouldbeusedtoimproveinstructionandsupportsfor
studentsandourschools.Accountabilityiskeyindeterminingwherestrengthsand
challengesarebutisonlyhelpfulifresultsareusedforactionableimprovement.

Wheninterpretingtestscores,weallmustrememberthattestscoresareonlyestimates
ofastudentsknowledge.Multiplesourcesofstudentinformationmustbeusedbefore
comingtoanyconclusionsonastudentsperformance.

Weshouldneveroverlyfocusonproficiency,butinsteadplacemorefocuson
achievementlevelsandhowourstudentsperformedontheachievementspectrum.
Thisnewassessmentisbasedonanewsetofrigorousstandardsintendedtosupport
morestudentsalongacollegeandcareerreadypathway.

Theassessmentisonesignalofstudentprogress,andwillbeusedinconjunctionwith
otherstudentinformationsuchasgrades,assignments,otherformativeassessments,
andstudentsprojectstoseehowstudentsaredoing.

Withthetransitiontothisnewassessment,thereisonekeycomponentofassessment
datamissing,whichisstudentgrowth.Growthtellsusmoreinformationthansimply
whereachildisonthenewachievementspectrumitprovidesinformationonhow
studentsareprogressingalongthatspectrumfromyeartoyear.Weanticipategrowth
measureswillbeavailablein2017.

The2015resultswillnotbefactoredintoaccountabilityorteacherevaluation
classificationsordecisions.

Assoonaswereceivedetaileddata,wewillanalyzedeeplywhereourstrengthsand
challengeslie.WewillswiftlysharedetailedinformationwithourBoardofTrusteesand
schoolssoallpartsofoursystemcanlearnfromtheresultsandputsupportplansin
action.

Althoughtheadministrationoftheassessmentwaspartofanoveralltesting
irregularity,andindividualscoresmaynotbeatideallevelsofreliability,wefeelour
familiesandstudentshaveaninterestinknowingtheirscores.Inthenearfuture,we
willbesharingstudentscoreswithfamilies,alongwithinformationonwhattheymay
andmaynotmean.Importantly,wewillremindfamilieswhattheassessmentsare
intendedtomeasureandconvey,andhowwecanworktogethertohelpsupport
studentsinmeetingthenewstandards.
