Competency: L-1: Knowledge, Assessment and Care of Pediatric Client /Family Subcategory: L-1-3 Demonstrate knowledge of common pediatric diseases and medical conditions such as: asthma, congenital anomalies, congenital heart disease, cystic fibrosis, down syndrome, muscular dystrophy, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), spectrum disorders and trauma.
What I Learned
I learned in NFDN 2005, that there are various of pediatric
diseases, some diseases are not curable and needs to be medicated lifelong. Diseases such as down syndrome or trisomy 21, can be detected during pregnancy, and I also learned that maternal age of above 40 are at greater risk of having infants with chromosomal defects. The type of nursing assessment and interventions is specific to the child's disease, I learned through reading the textbook that as a student nurse I should be able to give health teachings and support to parents about the newborn illnesses.

Fair I understand the competency in theory and in scenarios, also in nursing practice. To achieve this level of proficiency category, I had attended the theory class, do my readings in both Potter and Perry, Maternal and Child health nursing by Pilliteri and research through internet and online journals. My knowledge about pediatric illnesses is limited because I haven't been expose to pediatric setting, where I can observe and experience to take care a sick child .
