November2015.Mr.KeatingsucceedsNicholasKay,whose
twoandahalfyeartenureendedon29December2015.
TheSRSGwasreceivedatAdenAbdulleInternationalAirportbySomalias
MinisterofForeignAffairsandInvestmentPromotionAbdusalamH.Omer,
seniorUnitedNationsofficialsbasedinSomalia,amongthem,theDeputy
SRSGforSomaliaandUNResidentandHumanitarianCoordinatorPeterde
Clercq,theDirectorofMissionSupportattheUnitedNationsSupportOfficein
SomaliaAmaduKamaraandseniorofficialsoftheAfricanUnionMissionin
Somalia.
Inawelcomingceremonyheldattheairport,MinisterOmerhighlightedthe
significanceofSRSGKeatingsposition.Theexpectationishigh,thejobis
bigandtheproblemsarenumerous.Notasmuchastheyusedtobe,butstill
itsachallenge.SowewishhimgoodluckandIwillbeworkingwithhim
everywayIcanandtheSomaliGovernmentwillworkwithhimineveryway
wecantohelphimsucceed,statedtheminister.
IdefinitelyseemyjobashelpingSomalisfulfiltheirownvisionbutalsoto
helpmaintaininternationalcoherenceandsupportinthetimesahead,said
theSRSGinhisbriefremarks.Iamreallylookingforwardtomeetingyouand
yourcolleaguesinGovernment,butalsocivilsocietyinSomalia,aswellas
gettingtoknowUNcolleagues,workingwithallofyouandsupportingyour
work,aswellasourcolleaguesinthemilitary,aswellasthebroader
diplomaticcommunity.
SRSGKeatinghasextensiveexperienceinsupportingpoliticaland
peacebuildingtransitionsandleadinghumanitarianandrecoveryprogrammes
inAfghanistan,theMiddleEastandAfrica.
AppointedAssociateDirectoroftheLondonbasedindependentpolicy
instituteChathamHousein2012,heconcurrentlyservedasSeniorAdviserto
theUNSecretaryGeneralsSpecialEnvoytoSyria.HewasDeputySRSG
andUnitedNationsResidentandHumanitarianCoordinatorinAfghanistan
from2010until2012.
HealsoservedasExecutiveDirectoroftheAfricaProgressPanel,apolicy
