1. Introduction
ThisdocumentdescribestheBroadcomFingerprintManagementApplication(FMA).TheFMAisasingle
processGUIapplicationthatworksontopoftheWindowsBiometricFramework(WBF).
2. Functionality
Thepurposeoftheapplicationistoenableuserstoenrollupto10fingerprintswithanattached
fingerprintbiometricdevice.Italsosupportsdeletingpreviouslyenrolledfingerprints.Theapplicationis
deviceindependentandshouldworkseamlesslywithanyWBDIsupportingfingerprintsensoron
Windows7.OnlytheBroadcomUSHisofficiallysupported,Broadcomdoesnotguaranteefull
compatibilitywith3rdpartydevices.

6.1EnablingtheWindowsBiometricService
Tobeabletoenrollfingerprintsonamachine,thewindowsbiometricservicehastobeenabledfirst.
EnablingthebiometricsandenrollingfingerprintscanbedonewiththeBiometricDevicesControl
Panelapplet.TheappletisfoundinControlPanel/HardwareandSound/BiometricDevices.
ToenablebiometricsclickonChangesettings,selectBiometricson,checkAllowuserstologonto
WindowsusingtheirfingerprintsandclickSavechanges.

7.2Authenticate
Beforebiometricdatacanbeacquiredorupdated,theuserneedstobeauthenticatedviaWindows
passwordorfingerprintswipe.
Incasetheuserdoesnothaveanyfingerprintsenrolledatthetimetheauthenticationdialogisshown,
thedialogslayoutwillchangeaccordinglyandnotofferthefingerprintswipe.
IncasetheuserdoesnothaveaWindowspasswordset,hewillbepromptedtocreateonebeforethe
enrollmentprocesscanbegin.

Aftersuccessfulauthentication,theapplicationofferstheusertostarttheenrollmentprocessofanew
fingerprintortodeleteanexistingfingerprint.Inordertoenrollanewfingerprint,theuserhastoclick
thebuttonabovethechosenfinger.TheindividualbuttonsdontonlybringtheusertotheCapture
screen,theyalsorepresentthecurrentenrollmentstateofeachfinger.
Thebuttonsabovesuccessfullyenrolledfingersappearinadifferentcolorthanbuttonsabovefingers
thatarenotenrolled.
Todeleteapreviouslyenrolledfingerprint,theuserhastoclickonthebuttonabovethefingerthat
shouldbeunenrolled.

TheCapturescreeninstructstheusertoswipetheselectedfinger.Thefingerprinthastobesuccessfully
captured4timestobeabletocreateanewfingerprinttemplate.Theapplicationreportsvisuallyifa
swipewassuccessfulornotandinstructstheuserofthenextsteps.Attheendofasuccessful
fingerprintcapture,theusercanchoosetoeithersavethenewlycreatedtemplateortodiscardit.
Thewordingofthedialogisgoingtodifferslightlydependingonthesensortype.E.g.aswipesensorwill
havedifferentinstructionscomparedtoatouchsensor.
Asthenextstep,theuserwillbebroughtbacktothepreviousEnrollmentscreenwherehecaneither
selecttoenrollanewfinger,deleteafingerprinttemplateortofinishthefingerprintmanagementtasks.

TheapplicationisdeliveredaspartoftheCVHCIWindowsInstallerPackage.
Theapplicationisinstalledinto%ProgramFiles%\BroadcomCorporation\bydefault.
AnapplicationshortcutintheStartMenuwillnotbecreated.TheFMAhastobeinvokedviathe
ControlPanel.
