Answer:
(3@5)@8 = ((3 + 5)/2@8)
= 4@8
= (4 + 8)/2

2. A snail goes up along a nine-feel rod. It goes up by four feet in the daytime and goes down three feet at
night. How many days does it need to reach at the top of the rod?
Answer:
It goes up by only 1 foot (= 4 3) during a whole day before it reaches at the top, but it goes up by 4 feet
during the last daytime when it reaches the top. So it needs 6 days to reach the top. Among them 5 (= 9 4)
days are needed for going up and down before the last day.
3. If x = 212 36 and y = 28 38, what integers z satisfies xxyy = zz?
(Note: Your answer should not be expanded. Instead, write your answers as a product of powers of primes.)
Solution:
Since x = 21236 and y = 2838, its easy to see that xxyy = (21236)x(2838)y = 212x36x28y38y = 212x+8y36x+8y.
Now, 6x = 6(21236) = (2131)(21236) = 21337, and 8y = 8(2838) = 23(2838) = 21138 and 12x = 2(6x) = 21437. The
factor common to 12x, 8y, and 6x is 21137. In fact, 12x = 21437 = 8(21137), while 8y = 3(21137) and 6x = 21337 =
