MATHEMATICAL CHALLENGE FOR FILIPINO KIDS TRAINING PROGRAM

YOUNGSTER GROUP QUIZ # 1 (Answer Key)

1. Gideon has written a number pattern that begins with 1, 4, 9, 16, 25. If he continues this pattern, what are
the next three numbers?
Solution:
Stage 1: Understanding the problem
What do I need to find? I need to find 3 numbers after 25.
Stage 2: Making a plan of solution
The new number is the square of the number itself. That is, 1st number 1 1, 2nd number is 2 2,
3rd number is 3 3 etc.
Stage 3: Carrying out the plan
Look at the numbers in the pattern.
1st number = 1 1 = 1
2nd number = 2 2 = 4
3rd number = 3 3 = 9
4th number = 4 4 = 16
5th number = 5 5 = 25
Thus, the next three numbers are:
6 6 = 36
7 7 = 49
8 8 = 64
2. Study the given two number grids carefully and hence fill in the missing numbers of the grid.

n
Therefore, 20 squares need 3(20) + 1 = 61sticks.

Prepared by:

Number of sticks
4 = 3(1) + 1
7 =3(2) + 1
10 = 3(3) + 1
