Hot, hotter, TEGO. Heat resistance up to 650 C is the indisputable reason why coatings
manufacturers are increasingly using our specialty binders. They also withstand low temperatures,
are extremely weather-resistant and exhibit exceptional chemical resistance, high elasticity, very
good release and, of course, they conserve resources. They make finishes glossier and more
attractive and ensure protection against corrosion. In short, TEGO Specialty Binders determine the
fundamental properties of a coating and help ensure commercial success. We look forward to
discussing our all-rounders with you. TEGO Adding Advantages.

Sustainable Solutions
Drive Innovation in
Coatings Industry

he April issue has two features focused on delivering more environmentally-friendly and sustainable solutions to the coatings industry.
Low- and Zero-VOC Coatings Technologies (page 32) takes
a look at the latest offerings from major paint manufacturers. It is vitally
important to deliver coating solutions to the market that deliver a lower
environmental impact, said Nick Bartoszek, Sherwin-Williams global
marketing director - Liquid & Powder Products. Coatings that deliver
low or zero-VOC are common requests our customers are asking for every
day. When we do this, we are looking for ways to improve the product or
process as well. We consistently ask ourselves how we take steps out of
the process and limit total VOC emissions. Some examples: new resin developments have lowered VOCs and HAPs in polyurethane coatings; thats
something that allows finishers to meet environmental standards while realizing the potential energy and inventory savings that these finishes offer.
The environmental benefits of radiation curable technologies are well
known. Rather than using traditional methods, which typically use more
energy and create harmful emissions, UV/EB curing is typically quicker
and uses less energy. This years feature on Radiation Curable Coatings
(page 35) contains a Q&A session with Dr. Mike J. Idacavage, an adjunct
associate professor at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, NY where he teaches courses
in UV and EB curing technology. He answers some questions on the basic
technology and applications for radiation curable coatings and technology.
According to Idacavage, there are quite a few benefits to using radiation curing technologies. The most cited benefit on converting over from
thermal to light or EB cured formulations is productivity, he said. The
typical light cured coating can go from a liquid to a fully cured solid in
a few seconds or less as compared to an oven cure, which might take
minutes or hours. Another benefit of radiation curable coatings is that
in many cases, there is considerable less energy required to cure the coating. With no need for lengthy thermal ovens and their required heating
sources, the use of a small UV lamp as the energy source for curing results
in clear energy savings.

Hempels Acquisition
of Jones-Blair Company
Approved
Hempel has closed its previously announced acquisition of Jones-Blair
Company, a leading North American supplier for the protective and waterproofing markets. In line with Hempels global
growth strategy, the acquisition will provide Hempel with a solid and diverse
platform for the continued development
of its business in North America.
One of Hempels key objectives is
to strengthen its presence in North
America through organic growth and
acquisitions. The acquisition of JonesBlair Company, located in Dallas, Texas,
supports this objective by accelerating
Hempels growth in the region within its
strategic segments.
This acquisition is Hempels third in
the last four months. In December 2014,

Hempel acquired Schaepman, a Dutch

supplier of specialised industrial, protective and decorative coatings. In February
2015, it acquired its former toll manufacturer in South Africa, The Coatings

Axalta Opens Waterborne

Coatings Plant in Shanghai

Axalta Coating Systems, a global supplier

of liquid and powder coatings, has opened
a manufacturing facility in Shanghai to
produce waterborne coatings for Chinas
growing automobile market. The newest
and one of Axaltas most advanced waterborne production facilities, the plant
reflects the key role that China plays in
Axaltas global strategy, which is focused
on providing sustainable coating products
and application systems for customers
while reducing the environmental impact
of the production process. The new facility
is located adjacent to Axaltas operations
center that opened in the Jiading district
of Shanghai in 2008.
The new facility features advanced
manufacturing technologies and design
concepts such as integrated production systems designed to reduce the environmental
footprint of coating production. The highly
automated facility can also maximize the
use of raw materials and accelerate manufacturing cycle time. Advanced air filtration
systems are designed to optimize air quality within the facility and to reduce emissions. The new facility will double Axaltas
capacity in China for the production of
waterborne coatings, further enhancing the
companys market leadership in serving automotive customers in China, the worlds
biggest automotive market.
Axalta is proud to be a key waterborne coatings provider to Chinas

growing vehicle market, said Axalta

chairman and CEO Charles Shaver at
the opening ceremony. Our expanded
facility will provide sustainable coating options for our customers. The new
manufacturing center reflects the skill and
dedication of our employees who were
able to complete the entire construction
project in only 10 months.
The waterborne coating products produced at the Jiading location are designed
to meet global environmental requirements, such as the EUs VOC Regulation
2004/42/EC, which can help reduce
the overall environmental footprint of
Chinas auto industry.
Commenting on the new waterborne plant, Sun Lianying, chairman of
the China National Coating Industry
Association, said, This is a solid demonstration of Axaltas long-term commitment to the China market and its
eco-responsible
production
process
which will have a positive impact on the
sustainable development of Chinas coating industries. The development is fully
aligned with the Chinese governments
goal of developing a sustainable auto industry, using green solutions to meet rising market demand across the country.
One of the highlights of the plant
opening included a sustainability exhibition showcasing how Axalta manufacturing systems, products, applications, and

research and development practices each

contribute to a sustainable business model. The exhibition also illustrated how the
Jiading waterborne plant can help reduce
customers environmental footprint by
reducing volatile organic compounds and
energy consumption from their operations.
To be effective, sustainability must
be about productivity and profitability
as much as it is about the effects on the
environment and society, said Shaver.
In this way, increasingly sustainable
products and applications help to drive
business growth as well as make Axalta a
better partner for our customers.
The new plant represents a significant
expansion of Axaltas presence in China.
It joins two other dedicated liquid coating
manufacturing operations in the country,
an Asia Pacific R&D laboratory and color
development center, four training facilities for refinish customers and six powder
coating manufacturing locations. Axaltas
multiple resources in China work together
to support the sustained, long-term growth
of Chinas automotive and other industries
that use Axalta coatings.

Results of U.S. Architectural Coatings Industry Research Report Which Compared Business Trends
in 1Q15 vs. 1Q14
Each month, North Coast Research surveys
a large sample of paint retailers throughout
the U.S. to get a sense for current business
trends. Please note that of the three primary
architectural coatings channels (paint stores,
home centers, and retail distributors), this
survey is primarily reflective of the distributor
channel which tends to see volume growth
less than the industry; therefore, we view the
results as a directional indicator more so than
absolute industry volumes. For inquiries
regarding this report please contact Kevin
Hocevar at 216-468-6924 or kevin.hocevar@
northcoastresearch.com.
Architectural Coatings Sales Volumes Up 1.1% in 1Q15 vs. 1Q14
According to industry participants, average sales volumes increased 1.1% in
1Q15 compared to 1Q14. This compares
to volume growth of 1.6% in 4Q14, 1.2%
in 3Q14, and record volume growth of
2.6% in 2Q14. Although still positive, we
note that volumes grew at the slowest
rate in 1Q15 since the inception of our
survey, indicating slight slowdowns during the period primarily due to weather.
We continue to expect the full-year 2015
to play out similar to our initial expectations, although we now expect some
1Q15 demand to be deferred into later
periods. Overall, 51% of respondents
witnessed an increase in paint volumes
vs. only 20% that saw volumes decline,
averaging out to 1.1% year-over-year volume growth with a net increase of 31%.

Price of Paint from Suppliers 1Q15

Paint Prices Trend Slightly Higher
51% of contacts noted an uptick in the
price of paint in 1Q15 vs. 1Q14 as our
paint price index rose 1.1% compared to
average increases of 0.5%-1.0% in 2014.
Our research suggests that a little bit of
price is sticking in the U.S. architectural
paint industry but only in the independent
dealer channel and likely in the low-single
digit range. We do not believe the paint
store or home center channels are seeing
price increases at this time. Recall that we
picked up potential price increases in the
results from our 4Q14 survey where we
observed a meaningful uptick in contacts
that have been notified of a price increase
from paint manufacturers to take place in
2015. The majority of contacts believed
these attempts would be successful and
we believe that data we have discovered
in 1Q15 suggests that some degree of
pricing did in fact stick in the marketplace.
Overall, 51% of respondents witnessed
an uptick in pricing vs. only 6% that saw
pricing decline, averaging out to a 1.1%
increase in year-over-year pricing with a
net increase of 45%.
Raw Materials Continued Raw Material Declines Suggest Increasingly Encouraging Price/Raws
Based on our research, we believe oilbased raw materials and titanium dioxide
(TiO2) have seen meaningful declines
thus far through 1Q15. To simplify, we be-

12 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

10-18 Fresh Paint 0415.indd 12

lieve the raw material basket for coatings

can be broken down into 30% oil derived
raws, 20% TiO2, and 50% other. Certain
oil-based raws, such as solvents are down
at least 25%-30% whereas other polymerbased raws are down at least 5%-10%.
TiO2 started to see declines in 4Q14 after several quarters of remaining flat and
our research suggests pricing has slipped
further in 2015 to the tune of another 8%10%. Assuming the other category will
see flat to slightly higher pricing, we believe raw materials will decline mid-single
digits in 2015 which is more pronounced
when compared to our initial though
which forecasted low-single digit declines.
3-Month Outlook Outlook at Strong
Levels as Contacts Expect Pent-Up Demand and Busy Paint Season
Our proprietary Coatings 3-Month Outlook Index reached 0.80 in 4Q14 which
compares to a reading of 0.36 vs. 4Q1and
a reading of 0.92 vs. 1Q14. Please note
that the highest possible reading is +2
(indicating all contacts have a very positive outlook) and the lowest possible
reading is -2 (indicating all contacts have
a very negative outlook). We were not
surprised to see a strong outlook level in
our 1Q15 survey and view the 0.80 reading as in-line with our initial expectations;
however, we believe outlooks are strong
as the majority of contacts anticipate an
acceleration in demand and are excited
for what appears to be a busy 2015.

first response was What is this stuff? to
one that became the basis of fluoropolymer specifications as used by architects
all over the world today, said Kelly.
In 1965, Pennwalts corporate headquarters in Philadelphia was the first
project to feature Fluropon commercially.
The building was brown, one of only five
colors available at the time. Today, there
are more than 50,000 active code offerings from neutral to bright colors, micas,

The apps home screen allows the user
to select the type of functional area in
need of coating. Once the site has been
selected, labeled areas of the plant appear.
By clicking on a labeled area, the app will
populate specific coating recommendations for it.
The recommendation includes a primary coating system (primer, intermediate and top coat), dry film thickness for
each coat and total mils for the system.
Surface preparation tips and process descriptions are also included in the recommendation. By clicking on a product
name, the app pulls up a detailed product
data sheet.
Water and wastewater coatings from
Sherwin-Williams are formulated to return assets to service quickly, said Kevin
Morris, Sherwin-Williams regional water

that they remain on the cutting-edge of

coatings products and technologies.
To qualify for PPG/CAP group membership, applicators undergo a rigorous
audit encompassing all aspects of the
coating process, from cleaning and pretreating metal substrates to application
of the coating. The audit specifies paint
application parameters and cure schedules, as well as how finished products are
handled, packed and shipped.
Knapp said PPG/CAP group membership enhances coatings applicators ability to meet building industry demands for
value-added products and solutions. The
program offers architects, general contractors, glazing contractors and other
customers high levels of quality, reliability and performance, he added.
Working with a PPG-certified applicator helps ensure enhanced color harmony
among coated aluminum architectural
components on a building. PPG/CAP program guidelines establish protocols to
minimize color variance across coated
aluminum building components, such as:
a digital global database of colors
that are stored numerically;
a uniform, systems-oriented approach to matching colors and making paint; and
PPGs color and coatings knowledge,
experience and resources, especially
regarding metallic color production.

Prime Resins Unveils

Inorganic Mineral Coating
Prime Resins Inc. has introduced a new
class of inorganic water- and mineralbased coatings that provide corrosion
and fire resistance protection on multiple surfaces.
Prime Coat 6000 Lining, Prime
Coat 6100 Fire and Prime Coat 6200
Corrosion are spray-applied sustainable
inorganic coatings with broad applications. Each offers zero VOCs. All three
are designed to have a rapid set time and
cure tack-free within five minutes.
Prime Coat 6000 Lining is proven to
meet NSF/ANSI 61 standards for contact
with potable water and is highly abrasion- and chemical-resistant, making it an
option for municipal water and sewer applications, water tank linings and the like.
Prime Coat 6100 Fire provides superior fire resistance protection when applied to a variety of surfaces. ASTM E84
testing proved zero flame spread, zero gas
generation and zero smoke generation.
Prime Coat 6200 Corrosion provides
durable protection against corrosion and
oxidation of concrete and steel surfaces.
Only a thin layer, less than 20 mils, provides corrosion protection. The product
develops a strong bond with properly
prepared surfaces, producing an alloyed
layer that remains bonded to the surface
even if the visible layer is penetrated.
This product is ideal for marine applications such as seawalls, bridges, rebar,
railcars, pipelines, tanks and other surfaces exposed to moisture and/or abrasive
substances. The life of concrete that is
starting to erode and shed aggregate can
be extended with a thin application.
A new pump has been developed for
these products. The Prime PC features
twin progressive cavity pumps to meter
and disperse the material with almost
no shearing. Fewer passes are needed
to build thickness since the material
does not require over-diluting to prevent shearing. CW

Market Reports

IRL Releases A Profile of

the Asia-Pacific Paint Industry

The Asia-Pacific economies are growing

fast, boosting growth in the demand for
many building and industrial materials,
including paints and coatings. The total
market for paints and coatings was 21.4
million tonnes in 2013, and is forecast
by IRL to increase to 29.2 million tonnes
by 2018; this is equivalent to an average annual growth rate of 6.4% in the
medium term.
China is by far the largest national
market for paints and coatings in the
Asia-Pacific region, followed at some
considerable distance by India and
Japan. The smallest markets are those
of New Zealand and Singapore. While
medium-term growth is forecast to be
low in the more developed and mature markets such as Australia, New
Zealand and Japan, the developing
market of India is predicted to demonstrate growth of over 10% per annum
over the next five years. India still offers significant potential for paints and
coatings market growth, as per capita
consumption remains very low.
The Chinese market is still offering
good medium-term growth of around
6.5% per annum for paints and coatings
suppliers, driven by growth in downstream industries such as automotive,
construction, shipbuilding, petrochemicals and civil engineering. However, this
forecast growth is lower than in previous years as the country is experiencing
slower economic growth, caused by rising
costs of labour, land and raw materials,
and increasing taxes.
The third tier of growth markets comprises the South-East Asian economies
of Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia, the
Philippines and Malaysia. These countries are experiencing rising incomes, improving standards of living and increasing
domestic demand, while labour and production costs remain relatively low.
Overall in Asia-Pacific, architectural
coatings account for just less than 50%
of the total paints and coatings market,

although this figure varies considerably

from country to country. Indias high
share of the architectural segment, at
over 80%, reflects the very underdeveloped nature of much of the countrys industrial infrastructure.
Protective coatings and general industrial coatings (including can and coil

coatings) are the second and third largest end-use segments, respectively. New
Zealand and Singapore are the only two
countries with no consumption of automotive OEM coatings, since they do not
possess any automotive production facilities. Australias consumption of automotive OEM coatings is expected to fall to

Hot Melt Adhesive Market

in China to Reach RMB 15
Billion in 2019
GCiS China Strategic Research estimates
that the domestic market of hot melt adhesives in China is valued at over RMB
10.1 Bn, or USD 1.6 Bn, as of the end
of 2014. The study finds that the market will continue to grow at above GDP
growth rate in the next few years, driven
by Chinas continued rapid development
in key end-user industries.
Recently there has been a strong regulatory push to incentivize use of environmentally-friendly products, which in
combination with an increased environmental consciousness among the public
has put pressure on adhesive using manufacturers to opt for HMA, which has no
VOC emissions, over alternate solventbased adhesives. While HMA has key applications to textile, packaging, furniture,
and hygiene products industries, GCiS
forecasts electronics will continue to have
the highest growth, where hot melts are
used for the manufacturing and assembly, of electronic components, chips and
boards, cell phones, and computers. In total, these end-user industries are reported
to have consumed over 400,000 metric
tons of HMA in China currently.
Despite the overall economic slowdown, which will impact many downstream industries, suppliers are generally
optimistic about demand for hot melt adhesives in the coming years. Multinational
suppliers hold a very dominant position
in the market, especially in industries that
demand reliable high quality adhesive
products. Both domestic and foreign suppliers are prepared to introduce products
suitable for specific applications, temperature and bonding requirements.
This GCiS market study draws on a
three month in-depth primary survey of 82
of the markets suppliers, channel players
and experts. The report features in-depth
analysis of the 7 key hot melt adhesive

zero by 2018 as the country loses its vehicle manufacturing capabilities.

The relative importance of the
protective coatings segment is underpinned by the considerable activities in
terms of oil and gas production, energy
generation and mining that take place
in many of the Asia-Pacific countries.
Protective coatings have a particularly
large share of the market in China due
to the fast growth of sectors such as
civil engineering, marine engineering
and container manufacturing.
Marine coatings have a very high
share of the national paints and coatings market in Singapore, reflecting that
countrys importance as a regional hub
for maritime transportation, and also in
South Korea, which remains a key shipbuilding nation despite losing some business in recent years to China and other
low-cost countries such as Indonesia.
Industrial wood coatings are an especially dominant end-use segment in
Vietnam, thanks to the importance of
the wood processing industry and the
strong demand for Vietnamese-made
furniture from export markets around
the world.
Although the market for plastic coatings is relatively small in all countries
covered in this report, it is of greater
relative importance in Japan and Taiwan,
since those countries are key manufacturers of electrical and electronic goods.
A Profile of the Asia-Pacific Paint
Industry gives an insight into the
market changes in the past few years,
as well as outlining the key trends affecting the decorative and industrial
coatings segments for each individual
country covered. The scope of the
study covers Australia, China, India,
Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New
Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, South
Korea, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
It provides 2013 market data on nine
mainstream paints and coatings segments: architectural/decorative, industrial wood coatings, protective coatings,
marine coatings, automotive OEM
coatings, automotive refinishes, powder coatings, general industrial coatings
and plastic coatings. Forecastson these

3,800 stores that are independently owned
and operated by more than 700 concessionaires. We believe that the network of
stores can continue to grow further and
potentially reach upwards of 6,000 locations. We continue to be excited about the
prospects of growing the Comex business.
CW: What else is notable about the
Mexico/LatAm market involving Comex?
McGarry: Mexico is an expanding economy and we look forward to growing in
the region with Comex customers and employees. If you look at the coatings market
in Mexico, about half of the sales are architectural and half are non-architectural.
The countrys per capita consumption of
paint is about half that in the U.S. Right
now, the architectural side of the coatings
market has a lot of room for growth.
In addition, Mexico has an expanding oil and gas market and as this market opens up, we expect this to be a very

robust segment for PPG. We have a number of products in our protective and marine coatings business that will be poised
for growth in the petrochemicals segment.
We also expect the growing automotive market in Mexico to represent
a number of opportunities for PPG. As
automotive companies continue to build
manufacturing facilities in Mexico, this
represents opportunities for our architectural and industrial coatings products to
be incorporated into these facilities. And
in addition to increased demand for our
automotive coatings for new vehicles, the
increased amount of automobiles on the
road will lead to increased demand for
PPGs refinish products that are used in
auto body repair shops.
Due to our widespread exposure
across the coatings segments, we see
Mexico as a very favorable market for
PPG. We are already the top supplier of
coatings for automotive manufacturers
and we are the number one supplier of industrial coatings in Mexico. With Comex,
we can be a better and more innovative
supplier to the market.
On a global basis, the coatings market
is in the midst of continued consolidation.

The top 10 suppliers in the coatings market account for only about 50 percent
global market share. The market continues
to consolidate because our global customers demand solutions that can protect their
business. Customers are interested in innovative solutions that help to reduce energy
use, enhance resistance to corrosion and
protect their high-value assets. Successful
coatings companies need to rely heavily
on developing innovative technologies to
meet this demand. PPG is driving growth
in the segment through innovation and
products. We look forward to bringing
new innovations to the market. CW

EU Coatings Companies Outlook

Generally Bullish for the Near-Term

Despite economic
forecasts of
relatively slow
growth in the EU,
there is still a lot
of optimism in the
coatings sector.

by Sean Milmo
European Correspondent
milmocw@rodmanmedia.com

fter a slowdown in demand in the second half of last year in many parts of
Europe, coatings companies in the
region have become less confident about the
short-term future.
However, despite economic forecasts of relatively slow growth in the European Union, there
is still a lot of optimism in the coatings sector,
particularly among larger producers which are
active in higher growth markets outside Europe.
European demand is expected to pick up later
this year and then start to accelerate more strongly
in 2016, according to figures from the European
Commission, the Brussels-based EU executive.
Faster growth through to next year is being
predicted in Germany, Europes largest coatings

market. The GDPs of France and Italy, two

other major economies, are also expected to
continue to recover.
Also, low inflation and an easing of the
money supply by the European Central Bank
(ECB) should help to boost EU business investment, which would be good news for industrial
coatings suppliers.
The German Paint and Printing Association
(VdL), Frankfurt, is forecasting a 1.3 percent
decrease in coatings output this year. But is expecting an upturn in the second half of the year
mainly due to low inflation, which will stimulate both investment and consumption, and rising demand across the EU.
The output decline, likely to take place
mainly in the first half of the year, is a continuation of a slowdown in the domestic market
since the middle of last year when the VdL
was expecting a three percent increase in production in 2014.

The sector has

had a promising
start to the year
with confidence
levels still in pretty
good shape,
Tom Bowtell, chief
executive of BCF.
Coatings production in Germany
grew by two percent in 2014 and sales by
2.6 percent (since) business development
was less positive than anticipated, said
Michael Bross, VdL director. Decorative
coatings especially did not perform well
in the second half, whereas industrial
coatings and wood-finishes (were flat)
over the twelve months.
The German decorative market, which
is expected to decline by a further two
percent this year, has been hit by uncertainties about governments rules on energy efficiency in buildings.
This is a severe handicap, since house
owners postpone their investment waiting for better conditions in the future,
said Bross. (Better economic conditions)
in the second half of 2015 than the first
half of the year would help the decorative coatings sector.
Confidence levels have dipped slightly in the UKs coatings sector despite
the country recording the fastest growing GDP among the leading Western
European economies.
In a regular survey by the British
Coatings Federation (BCF) of its members, 70 percent were feeling reasonably
or very confident about their short term
futures early this year compared with 80
percent last summer.
The sector has had a promising start
to the year with confidence levels still in
pretty good shape, said Tom Bowtell,
BCFs chief executive. Confidence has
been high in the decorative sector where

professional sales have been going up by

seven percent in volume terms against
two percent in the retail segment.
In what could turn out to be Western
Europes most rapidly expanding coatings market the competitive intensity is
shown in the way overall sales by value
are trailing those by volume.
While volume sales of all coatings rose
by five percent last year, they increased by
only 2.5 percent by value. Theres been
more price pressure as customers continue
to squeeze their suppliers, said Bowtell.
Multinational coatings companies
in Europe been reporting pricing pressures in the region and its periphery,
which together with currency changes have affected revenues levels. But
profits have been increased or have
remained intact due to the companies
having leaner operations.
Most of them are expecting that their
restructuring and cost-cutting exercises
over the last years will help to improve
margins this year.
AkzoNobels decorative paints business, the European market leader, recorded a 10 percent decrease in sales in the
region in 2014. Since Europe accounts for
60 percent of total sales, its global decorative revenues went down by six percent
to 3.9 billion ($4.25 billion). However,
EBITDA (earnings before interest tax depreciation and amortization ) for the business rose by 12 percent to 405 million.
Its performance coatings business, for
which it does not give regional breakdowns of results, had flat sales of 5.6
billion, but a four percent rise in EBITDA
to 687 million.
In both the decorative and the performance coatings business, which
includes marine, protective, powder, automotive refinishing and industrial coatings, AkzoNobel has been cutting costs
through measures such as shortening
supply chains, eliminating management
layers and centralizing certain activities.
The lower-cost structures in both operations should form a sound basis for further
improvements in 2015, said AkzoNobels
chief executive officer Ton Bchner.
Europes international players in coatings are generally upbeat about profitability, if not sales, because of their success with

April 2015 www.coatingsworld.com

24-25 Europe 0415.indd 25

cost decreases and also their involvement in

markets with disparate growth rates.
We are delivering the best results
ever (and) margins have been good
throughout the whole year, commented
Morten Fon, Jotuns chief executive officer, when reporting the companys 2014
results in February.
Hempel, which like Jotun is active in
marine, protective and decorative coatings,
also delivered a record EBITDA last year.
This was partly due to favorable
raw material prices, but was also thanks
to the efficiency measures we have taken
over the last few years, said Pierre-Yves
Julien, Hempels group president and
chief executive officer. He was confident
the company would meet its objective of
continued growth without compromising cash generation or efficiency.
A conspicuous exception to the bullishness of European international coatings
operators is Tikkurila of Finland. It has
been suffering badly from its reliance on
the Russian market where it has production plants and a network of sales offices.
Russia, whose economy has been battered by low oil prices and economic
sanctions triggered by its involvement in
the insurgency in neighboring Ukraine,
accounts for approximately 40 percent of
Tikkurilas sales.
The countrys economic troubles last
year contributed to a 5 percent fall in
the companys sales and a 11 percent
drop in operating profit. With the country sliding into even greater difficulties
in 2015, Tikkurila conceded that both
sales and operating profit would be below 2014 levels.
The uncertain economic situation
and consumers reduced purchasing power will decrease paint demand in Russia,
said Erkki Jaervinen, Tikkurilas president and chief executive officer.
The countrys Economy Ministry is forecasting a drop of ten percent in real wages
and six percent in disposable income this
year, making a deep recession inevitable.
Russia could be the major challenge this year to coatings companies and their customers in Germany
and Scandinavia, as well as Eastern
European members of the EU, which do
a lot of business in the country. CW

China Architectural Coatings Market

Enters A New Era
by Arnold Wang
China Correspondent

ased on the information released

by the National Bureau of Statistics
of China, we can see that Chinas
coatings market in 2014 grew by around
eight percent last year over 2013. And the
fact that Chinas architectural coatings
market is entering an era of single digit
growth is not surprising to everyone, so
some of the coatings producers have already begun to adjust their business strategies in China to meet this new challenge.
And the architectural coatings market is
revealing to us its new picture:

Not every market sector will

grow slower than before
Architectural coatings producers used to
invest heavily to promote their products
towards the market segment of newly constructed buildings, but with Chinas real
estate market slowing down its growth in
recent years, the market potential in this
sector is not large enough to absorb the
total production capacities (even growing) of the architecture coatings industry
in China. Some major changes also happened in the real estate market as well, for
example, the governments latest action to
support the real estate market is through
purchasing unsold residential properties
and converting these units into low-cost
public housing. The real estate market
in China is so critical and important and
closely linked with so many other upstream industries that the Chinese government will not let it fall free.
Besides, the construction of public infrastructures such as highway and railway
still attract huge investments. In 2014 the
investments for the public infrastructure sector grew by double digits, apparently outperforming the real estate sector. And the
momentum will be even stronger because
public infrastructure and public housing
will play an important role in the Chinese

governments plan to maintain GDP growth

rate at seven percent in 2015 so as to control
unemployment rates under a reasonable rate.
Conversely, both public housing and public
infrastructures provide new growth opportunities for some coatings producers in China.

Repainting market will

grow 50 percent annually
Although the market demand for painting
new apartments will not grow as fast as
before, the demand coming from repainting old apartments is catching up rapidly
at a very low base. It is estimated by an
expert in Nippon Paint that no less than
three million apartments in tier one cities, which include Beijing, Guangzhou,
Shenzhen and Shanghai, need to be repainted. And this market sector will grow
by 50 percent annually. Nippon Paint and
AkzoNobel have started expanding their
services in the repainting market with the
hope of finding new sales growing areas.

Accurate marketing and

efficient operations will
be key factors to drive
continuous growth
Facing even fierce competition and less

positive business environment, different architectural coatings companies in

China have adopted different business
strategies to keep their sales growth
from slowing down. Some companies
reorganized their operations to better
prepare themselves for the recent market
change. For example, YIPs Chemical,
a leading coatings and ink company
founded by an entrepreneur born in
Hong Kong and whose total sales have
surpassed 10 billion HK dollars, consolidated their household and architectural
coatings, industrial coatings and resins
into Bauhinia Coatings Group, with a
new management core team assuming
full responsibility. Having set root in
China for many years and having prepared ourselves accordingly, we are confident that we can enjoy the fruit of the
countrys economic boom by leveraging
our competitive edge. After consolidating and optimizing the core businesses
of the Group, a streamlined management structure and a clear market position will further strengthen our overall
competitiveness and synergies will gradually appear. Tony Ip, chairman of YIPs
Chemical Group commented.

Some other architectural coatings companies choose to expand their production
capacities in order to build economy of
scale and introduce new coating products
into the market. Guangdong UNZO put
their 100,000 tons per year architectural
coatings production lines into operation in
the second half of 2014, and now the company can produce a variety of new architectural coatings, such as stone paint and
multi-layer elastic coatings. Conversely,
Shandong Puntium Paint is building their
500,000 tons per year water-based architectural coatings capacity since 2012. To
achieve this target, Puntium is trying to
get financing from the National Equities
Exchange and Quotations, a new stock
trade market focusing on helping the financing of middle and small companies in
China. In fact, over 20 coatings companies
are listed or are trying to be listed in the
new stock trade market in China since the
new market system was launched.
While, other architectural coatings companies try to build closer business alliances

with real estate companies. For example,

Skshu recently signed an agreement of
forming a strategic cooperation alliance
with Gemdale, one of the largest real estate
companies in China. The new agreement
secures Skshus position as the exclusive
exterior architectural coatings supplier for
Gemdale real estate projects build from
2015 to 2017. The benefit for Skshu is secured business in three years with one of
their major customers, and for Gemdale,
probably low price and better service.

No coatings agency might

be needed in the future
A new trend in China may be noted as
a result of an internet-based decoration
company that has aggressively entered
the market in early 2015. ikongjian.
com, also called Mi decoration in the
market, the same name as the brand
name of Chinas fastest growing mobile
phone(although denied to have real business relationship by the top executive of
the mobile phone brand recently), has

disrupted the decoration market order

now. Ikongjian competes with traditional decoration companies with its low
price (699 yuan per square meters) and
fast working schedule, targeting mainly
the customers of the millennial generation through its website. Now the construction materials producers, including
coatings producers are paying close attention to the new market trend. If most
of the customers buy in to this new service module, the coatings value chain
and distribution channel will be rewritten soon.
The competition in Chinas architectural coatings market will be even fiercer
due to the slowing down of the real estate
market. The advantage of foreign brands
in the market is not to be swayed easily
by relatively new domestic brands, so consolidation and M&A as a result of market
competition might happen more frequently in the next two years in the architectural coatings industry. For consumers, this
might not be a bad scenario. CW

Rounding Out Growth from Tight Places

Growth in Energy Extraction

crude product. Each phase of the process, including the transportation component, involves products that must be specifically coated
to meet the performance requirements of the process. Further, the
hydraulic fracking process has a special product coating requirement, and also uses many types of resins and specialty chemicals
that are common to coating formulation.

Last months Business Corner reviewed the substantial growth in

U.S. energy resources extracted from tight oil and gas shale formations by hydraulic fracturing (fracking). Despite a substantial
decline in global crude oil prices initiated late in 2014, a significant
decrease in the number of shale drilling rigs and an unprecedented
inventory surplus, U.S. production of crude oil is estimated to have
continued to rise in 1Q14. Whether or not this six year growth
trend will level off, or even decline in 2015, the volume of crude oil
extracted is still expected to be substantial in 2015.
Two important elements required to achieve profitable business
growth are developing new markets and leveraging loyalty to capitalize on the opportunities. The focus of this months analysis will be a
review of the fracking process to extract oil and gas from tight shale
formations, and the identification coatings types and related new
technologies that are emerging to support this world changing event.

The Big Picture

The general hydraulic fracking process was diagramed in last
months article. However, before any tight gas or oil can be extracted, the shale field must be developed. As shown in the simplified
schematic, the site must be prepared, the infrastructure constructed,
the wells must be drilled vertically and horizontally, fractured, and
then the tight gas or crude oil resources can be conducted from the
field. Each step of the process requires a substantial transportation
component to move construction equipment and materials into
the site, provide raw materials at regular intervals, and remove the

The transportation vehicles delivering to the frack site include

flatbeds, hoppers, and tank trucks or railcars. However, the
high volume, reoccurring deliveries of raw materials, such as
sand or water-based chemicals have the most significant impact on coatings growth. Extracted crude is usually shipped
out of the shale field by pipeline or rail. Although more than
2/3 of the crude oil production is transported to refineries by
pipeline, in the last six years it is estimated that crude oil shipments by rail car in North America have increased by a magnitude of 50X. Thats fifty times the volume - to around half a
million rail cars in 2014. This has required a substantial effort
to retrofit vehicles to transport product in and out of the site,
and coatings are specified to meet the performance needs of the
transported goods.
Thus, chemical, corrosion or abrasion resistant epoxy,
phenolic, 100% solids aromatic polyureas or even bis-A free
epoxies may be specified for interior tanker linings. Exterior durable urethane based coatings may be specified for hoppers and
tanker exteriors, over an epoxy primer.
Due to the size of the vehicles, moderate cure temperatures
and long bake times are typical, with varying metal thicknesses
and film builds requiring complete through-cure.
Pipelines are typically coated with corrosion resistant functional fusion bonded epoxy powder coatings applied via a fluidized bed to withstand underground environments.

Strategies & Analysis Business Corner

The demand for construction vehicles has waned for building

residential and commercial properties, as the new housing slump
has stagnated at volumes that are only a fraction of pre-recession levels. Yet the growth in hydraulic fracking operations has
boosted the ACE (Agricultural & Construction Equipment)
market to deliver products such as tree harvesting & transport
vehicles, a variety of construction and earth moving equipment,
riggers, tankers, and even seismic, pumping and drilling trucks.
It is due to this market that the major ACE manufacturers have
reported an annual business growth of more than 10%.
Coatings and applications techniques for these vehicles
would follow along the same lines as the transportation paints
listed above, with DTM (direct to metal) and two coat formulations applied to meet chemical, corrosion, weatherability and
other performance requirements.
The fracking sites contain many tanks to hold a variety of
raw materials and waste products that are typically water based
in nature. Depending upon the need, the tanks may be lined
with an epoxy or phenolic coating to resist, for example certain
chemicals or even a brine environment.
Buildings for employees and/or equipment are often constructed from epoxy primed and polyester coated coil stock, and
fractionation facilities typically need both chemical resistance
and outdoor durability; either two coat systems, or urethane
topcoats may be a typical choice.
Equipment, such as generators, compressors, pumps and
oil field apparatus may be powder coated with exterior durable
polyester TGIC, HAA or urethane crosslinked coatings, or epoxy-polyester hybrids for interior application.
Knowledge of the value chain is often derived through building long term, loyal relationships with ones customers. Thus,
profitable growth can be achieved by supplying customers who
are supporting these markets, and being able to react and deliver
on evolving requirements for improved cure response, performance or environment regulations.
The development of large scale hydraulic fracturing operations in North America has introduced several substantially
new and tremendously growing technologies. After the well has

been drilled and stabilized, the fracturing fluid is pumped down

into the well bore at high pressure to create fractures or voids
through the horizontally drilled shale formations.
The fracturing fluid is a water-based slurry containing
typically close to 10% sand and a number of additive chemicals that in combination typically make up less than 1% of the
fluid formulation.
Many of these additives are used in coatings, and not unlike coating formulations, there is an evolving process, which
varies by application location, to optimize performance, decrease environmental impact, and reduce the cost of the fluids.
The fractures or voids allow the tight gas or oil to permeate
through the rock and be conducted upward through the well.
However, the underground pressure, which drives the flow, will
also cause the void space to collapse over time. This pressure
and void space must be maintained to continue conduction of
the crude, and this accomplished with the injection of proppants
with the fractionation fluid.
Proppants are a sieved grade of spherical sand or ceramic particles, used to pack in to and stabilize the voids, thereby
maintaining the effective conduction of the crude up the well
bore. However, depending on the well depth, pressure and other
factors, the strength of proppants may be need to be increased,
which is accomplished by coating the proppant.
The proppant coating generally consists of a phenolic resin
cured with hexamine. Other resins, such as epoxies, have also
been used in to produce proppant coatings. The coating may
be formulated to develop additional flow and cure in the void
space, further stabilizing the proppants in the void space by
locking the particles together.
In 2015, it is estimated that approximately 80 billion pounds
of proppants will be consumed in North America, and almost
90% of that volume was sand. The use of resin coated proppants is about 5% of the total and expected to continue to grow,
though at a slower pace than the general market. Yet this is a
tremendous growth market, which may be accessed by working
with customers that have entre to this value chain.
During the process of fracking, portions of the horizontal
lines are systematically blocked off to target fracturing in a particular area. A frac-ball, or plug, with a diameter aligned with
the well bore or sleeves, is injected into the well to create the
blockage. Eventually the frac-ball is removed and the well is
open to conduct the crude to the well head.
The frac-balls are essentially a composite of fiberglass and
resin, typically an epoxy or phenolic.
The fracking process has grown tremendously over the last
decade in North America. This has created tremendous opportunities for new business development, ranging from the
mundane, such as mining and hauling sand, to exotic new technologies, such as resin coated proppants; and an overall boost
in the manufacturing of equipment used in drilling operations.
Growth in coatings is an inevitable and positive consequence of
extracting oil and gas from tight places, and being able to leverage loyalty and customer relationships can support new growth
for sustainable profitability. CW

Several Shades of Grey: Who Owns The

Trade Secret - The Creator or the Employer?
by Steve McDaniel and Jon Hurt,
TechnologyLitigators.com

ou want the best most innovative people to work for you. Sure
you do. You hire them for their
specialized expertise in your field of technology. They are the ones that develop
your proprietary technology your trade
secrets. But simultaneously, they are also
refining their general expertise in the field.
All good things come to an end, and
so does their employment. These valued
employees move on to greener pastures,
working for, or directly as, a competitor.
But is the work product they now create
for a new employer that mirrors, mimics
or reflects your products, a misappropriation of your trade secrets or is it merely
an application of their expertise in the that
field to do their job and make a living?
A guiding benchmark is the employed to invent doctrine established
by the U.S. Supreme Court in the 19th
century That which [an employee] has
been employed and paid to accomplish
becomes, when accomplished, the property of his employer. In the absence of
written agreement(s) with the employee,
often state and federal laws based on this
principal will support your claim of ownership of the trade secret created by an
employee while employed.
However, trade secret misappropriation cases invariably have the local flavor
of jurisprudence in the state that they
are prosecuted, and different answers to
the who owns it? question have been
generated depending upon the how much
light the facts of the case provides.
In Wexler v. Greenberg, Buckingham
Wax Companys chemical formulas were
often created by the head chemist, Mr.
Greenberg, typically through reverse engineering competitors formulas and then
making improvements. Mr. Greenberg
also had access to all of Buckinghams
formulas made under his supervision,

production methods and raw material

suppliers. He later quit and went to work
for a different company, Brite Products
Co., Inc., that soon began producing
Buckinghams products (i.e., formulas
that Mr. Greenberg developed
at Buckingham). Sounds like
a clear case of trade secret
misappropriation, right? Not
so fast. The Supreme Court
of Pennsylvania found that
though the formulas being used
by Mr. Greenberg were trade
secrets, they were all developed
by Mr. Greenberg. The circumstances were unlike cases
where a company provided a
trade secret to an employee
which would invoke an implied
pledge of secrecy given the absence of a written work agreement (hint hint) between Mr.
Greenberg with Buckingham
that would limit his disclosures. Thus, the trade secrets
created by Mr. Greenberg at
Buckingham forms part of the
technical knowledge and skill
he has acquired by virtual of his
employment with Buckingham
and which he has an unqualified privilege to use.
In contrast, though the circumstances were similar, the
Supreme Court in Iowa came to
a differing conclusion in Basic
Chemicals v. Benson by a slight
change in the facts. Mr. Benson
was an employee tasked to establish formulae, lowest costs,
highest profits in keeping with competitive
markets, sell and create necessary selling
force, and otherwise be responsible for
all details of Basic Chemicals, Inc. After
quitting, Mr. Benson became employed by
Berman Chemical Company, which began
selling products that Mr. Benson asserted
to customers would have physical and
performance constants identical to those

30 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

30-31 iPaint 0415.indd 30

purchased from me in the past. However,

in light of letters written by Benson to
salesmen and customers during his employment by Basic in which he recognized
that the various formulas involved were

secret and confidential. Benson praised

the know-how of Basic. the court found
that the trades secret formula, though developed by Benson were not available for
his use in latter employment. This aspect
of the case seems to have hinged on how
Benson had characterized the trade secrets,
and not by the proactive actions (i.e., employment agreements) of Basic. But this
April 2015

Protecting the P&C Industrys Intellectual Assets IPaint

line of reasoning begs the question, what if
Benson had not characterized the formula
in a way that could be held as an admission that he knew they were confidential?
Though both of these cases occurred
prior to the adoption of their version
of the Uniform Trade Secrets Act by
Pennsylvania and Iowa, but they highlight the differing outcomes that can occur based on slight tweaks to the facts of
the case in the absence of written con-

tractual agreements. Trade secret law,

a creature born of cases argued before
the various state courts, are always factintensive. Basically, they revolve around
the old who-done who wrong made-forTV melodrama format.
In certain circumstances, a court may
wind up splitting the baby in two regarding ownership of a trade secret created

by an employee under the shop rights

doctrine. The shop rights principal finds
its home in various state court patent
case law where an employee conceives
an invention while using an employers
resources, such as using equipment or
materials. An important difference here
though is the factor that the employee
was not hired to develop the invention
that was conceived. Under this doctrine,
the employee owns the invention (or
trade secret), but the employer
has the right to use it without
paying a royalty. But, to clearly
establish a shop right exists requires a judge deciding so after
the hassle of a court case. And
the employee is free to use the
trade secret as a competitor.
However, if you are in
California, an employee may
have a harder time using this
or other types of arguments
to gain ownership of work
related trade secrets.
The
Golden States Labor Code
Section 2860 explicitly states
Everything which an employee acquires by virtue of his
employment, except the compensation which is due to him
from his employer, belongs to
the employer, whether acquired
lawfully or unlawfully, or during or after the expiration of
the term of his employment.
Well, that seems helpful. On
the flip side, California statues
generally ban non-competition
agreements that we have previously discussed as a way to limit
potential misuse of trade secret
information by former employees. And California statutes,
as well as those of some other
states, explicitly prohibit an
employment agreement from becoming
overly ambitious by requiring assignment
of an invention made using the employees own time and resources, which arguably carries over to trade secrets.
To make things even murkier, what
happens if in the above examples, if it
was not an employee, but an independent
contractor involved?

The Massachusetts Superior Court recently ruled in C.R.T.R., Inc. v. Lao, et al.
that an independent contractor who had
taken customer names, prices, accounting records and business relationship information about another company could
not be sued for trade secret misappropriation. Some of the facts that seem to
weigh most against the plaintiff was the
lack of confidentiality agreement with the
independent contractor, and the depositions of employees that one know the
customer lists were confidential, though
no one had ever told her so and another
employee stating that on one occasion,
she was told not to bring work out of the
office as being inadequate evidence that
any measures were taken to protect its
purported trade secrets.
However, for creation of a trade secret by an independent contractor working for a client, the U.S. District Court in
Colorado in Computer Assoc. Intl, Inc.
v. American Fundware, Inc., applied extension of trade secret common law employer ownership to an employee created
trade secret to an independent contractor
stating that status as an employee or an
independent contractor is irrelevant
to the ownership of a trade secret. This
case is often cited in other federal district
court cases.
Sorry to tell you this, but this area of
laws protecting your trade secrets is literally 50 shades of Grey as thats the
number of stars in old glory. The take
home message is you should check with
your local counsel familiar with the state
laws that may come into play in protecting your trade secrets. Though almost
all states have now adopted versions of
the Uniform Trade Secrets Act, there
may be differences between the versions
from one state you do business in with
anothers. And each state may have very
specific statues and past case law history
that may influence the outcome of litigation. With that in mind, your legal team
should without fail draft legal agreements
that most advantageous for you to match
the likely jurisdictions where lawsuits
may be filed, and minimalize the shadows
cast by state law effects on your claim to
ownership of the trade secrets created in
the conduct of your business. CW

Low- and Zero-VOC

Technology
Increasingly stringent environmental regulations have created a greater demand for lowand zero-VOC coatings products.
Kerry Pianoforte, Editor

he importance of developing sustainable products remains one of the major issues for the paint and coatings
industry. From OEM equipment manufacturers to DIY
consumers, environmentally friendly products are increasingly
being sought. Coatings manufacturers recognize how important
it is to deliver low- and zero-volatile organic compound (VOC)
products and offer their customers sustainable solutions.
It is vitally important to deliver coating solutions to
the market that deliver a lower environmental impact, said
Nick Bartoszek, Sherwin-Williams global marketing director
- Liquid & Powder Products. Coatings that deliver low- or
zero-VOC are common requests our customers are asking
for every day. When we do this, we are looking for ways to
improve the product or process as well. We consistently ask
ourselves how we take steps out of the process and limit total
VOC emissions.
Some examples of this are new resin developments that
have lowered VOCs and HAPs in polyurethane coatings.
Thats something that allows finishers to meet environmental
standards while realizing the potential energy and inventory
savings that these finishes offer, said Bartoszek. In wood finishing, high-performance, low cure powder coatings for MDF,
waterborne and formaldehyde free finishes all products that
Sherwin-Williams offers to finishers play a significant role in
lowering VOCs.
Today, the ability to offer low- and zero-VOC coatings isnt
just important; its an absolute necessity, said a spokesperson at
PPG Industries. At PPG, we offer a breadth of low- and zeroVOC coatings across all technologies, including powder and ecoat which are inherently low-VOC as well as liquid and
pretreatment products. PPG also works closely with customers
to help them stay ahead of impending environmental legislation,
whether those regulations are global, regional or specific to a
local market.

Low- and Zero-VOC Technology FEATURE

PPG understands that continued innovation in low- and zero-VOC coatings
is essential to maintaining leadership status. The product development we do
in-house and in partnership with our customers is critical to that mission, said the
spokesperson.
Benjamin Moore is another coatings
company at the forefront of manufacturing
environmentally friendly paints. We have
continued to expand throughout our product portfolio to offer a broad range of lowand zero-VOC products for all end-users
homeowners, contractors and specifiers,
said Patricia Bennett, brand manager at
Benjamin Moore.
Benjamin Moore offers a number of
products for both residential consumers
and commercial applications that are low- or zero-VOC. For
consumers, Natura is our greenest product with zero-VOC and
zero emissions, but we also offer other premium zero-VOC
products such as Aura, Regal Select and ben, said Bennett.
For commercial users, Ultra Spec 500 offers contractors a
zero-VOC option.
All of these products are tinted on Benjamin Moores proprietary zero-VOC Gennex colorant platform, which ensures
VOCs are not added back into the final product once they are
tinted. This is a distinguishing factor versus many other competitive paints, Bennett noted.
Sherwin-Williams offers a full range of low- and zeroVOC coating solutions. These solutions range from powder
coatings, high and ultra high solids solventborne coatings
to waterborne coatings. We offer a variety of baking, air
dry and UV curable solutions to meet our customers coating
needs, said Bartoszek. A few recent product introductions
include Powdura Sprint, a fast-curing powder coating for
MDF applications; Powdura OneCure, a two-coating monocure system for heavy equipment and general finishing; and
the Ultra-Cure Waterborne UV Pigmented Blending System
for wood finishing. We have a broad offering of formaldehyde-free wood finishes that includes lacquers, conversion
varnishes, primers and surfacers.
PPG offers customers a complete end-to-end solution for a
low-VOC coating system, from pretreatment to liquid, powder
and e-coat.
Powder coatings are inherently low-VOC because they are
solvent-free and, while most e-coats contain some small amount
of co-solvent, modern use of this technology produces few, if
any, VOC emissions, said PPGs spokesperson. As for liquid
coatings, PPG continues to invest in developing waterborne and
ultra-high-solid formulations for low-VOC emissions because
of the advantages liquid coatings offer in color, substrate flexibility and energy consumption.
There is a general trend toward low-VOC in virtually all coatings market segments. Typically, the automotive market has led,

but were seeing a focused effort on increasing the use of low-VOC

coatings in Asia, particularly in China, where there is a growing
emphasis on environmental protection, said PPGs spokesperson.
Benjamin Moore said it is finding consumers looking
for greener products for their homes and families, in addition to low- and zero-VOC paints being speced for new
green buildings. Innovation has always been a key strategy for Benjamin Moore, said Bennett. We continue to
find new greener and improved processes for manufacturing our products.
Many of our customers in VOC regulated regions seek these
low- and zero-VOC coating solutions, but many seek out these
finishes as well to show their commitment to the environment
to their customers, as well as offering their finishing employees
a better workplace environment, said Bartoszek. We are finding that many of our solutions to meet the VOC restrictions also
improve quality and/or improve productivity, so the customer
really gives nothing up by choosing an environmentally friendly
solution. Typically, lower VOC liquid products usually mean
higher solids; that will usually lead to more film per pass and
could translate into process savings.

FEATURE Low- and Zero-VOC Technology

Much of our recent efforts have been focused on waterborne solutions, improvements in powder coatings (i.e.,
low cure powder coatings for engineered wood surfaces)
and UV curable technology; that is reflected in the products
that Sherwin-Williams introduced last year at IWF and the
Powder Coating Show, said Bartoszek. Sherwin-Williams
views the challenge to low VOC emissions as an opportunity
to improve quality, lower process times for our customers
and reduce energy requirements. To simply lower the VOCs
is not enough. We see these opportunities as our chance to
innovate and improve the coatings we offer to the marketplace, and we believe that our product introductions over the
past several years speak well to the work we have done to
achieve those goals.
One of the key competitive advantages PPG has is its ability
to conduct advanced resin technology research, the company
stated. Were not solely dependent on raw material suppliers to
improve our coatings and, because of that, we are uniquely positioned to help customers meet environmental demands, said
the spokesperson.
PPG recently achieved sustainability advances in a number of
coating technology platforms. Beyond new low- and zero-VOC
coatings for the architectural market, PPG introduced waterborne refinish coatings for the automotive industry; anti-fouling,

non-copper-containing coatings for the marine industry; and

metal-free catalysts for e-coat.
These types of developments are continually taking place
because sustainability is part of PPGs core mission, the spokesperson added. PPG also works closely with customers to make
coatings more environmental friendly, and with the EPA, government agencies and other stakeholders to educate them about the
VOC limits achievable with new coating technologies. Legislation
and customer demand continue to drive the technology. CW

Radiation Curable
Coatings

Coatings World recently had the opportunity to interview, Dr. Mike J. Idacavage, an
adjunct associate professor at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, NY who teaches courses in UV
and EB curing technology. In this interview, he answers some questions on the basic
technology and applications for radiation curable coatings and technology.
Coatings World: Can you describe the basic technology behind
radiation curable coatings?
Mike Idacavage: The technology behind radiation curable coatings can be thought of as changing the way a coating is cured.
In radiation curable coatings, UV energy, visible light, or low
energy electrons (EB) are used to form a coating, film or ink
as opposed to thermal, evaporative, or oxidative (air-dry) cure.
Another way to think of this technology when it comes to coatings is that we are now using light instead of heat (ovens) to
solidify the liquid coatings formulations to the desired solid
coatings required for many applications. Of course, to make this
happen there are some necessary changes that has to be made in
the coatings formulations such as the addition of photoinitiators

to react with the light and reactive resin materials that will
then cure with the photoinitiators. However, the overall
concept can be thought of as
substituting light for heat in
curing a coating.

CW: What are the benefits/

advantages of using radiation
curable coatings?
Idacavage: As you might
imagine, there are quite a few

of radiation curable chemistry to create new combinations of
properties will result in innovation in markets that would not be
traditional end users of this technology.
CW: What are some new technologies being developed related
to radiation curable coatings technology?
Idacavage: This is a great question that I think can be answered
in several different ways, depending on the point of view of the
person posing the question. If the aim of the question is to find
out what new advances can be found within radiation curable
technology, I would point out the very high level of interest in
UV-LED curing. In this practice, the traditional mercury-based
UV bulb is changed out with a UV-LED bulb. This offers some
distinct advantages of long life time, cooler operating conditions
and less of a gradual drop off in energy. To balance this out , there
are some disadvantages such as the limited availability of photoinitiators that can make use of the light from a UV-LED bulb. I
believe that both traditional mercury bulbs and UV-LED bulbs
will each play a role in the development of new applications.
If the question is geared to what new applications might be
on the horizon, then my answer would be based on the ability
of new chemistry, formulations and equipment to start to produce coatings that have two or more properties within the same
cured product. For example, a new formulation may combine a

hard, scratch resistant coating with some unique optical properties. By combining several needed attributes in the same system,
the new generation of radiation curable coatings will enable
new materials for a wide range of end applications.

CW: Please describe the RadTech Radiation Curing Program

at SUNY.
Idacavage: The State University of New York College of
Environmental Science and Forestry (SUNY-ESF) and RadTech
International North America (RadTech) has partnered to create
a program that bridges academic and professional development
in the area of radiation curable coatings. The Radiation Curing
Program (RCP) helps both students and industry professionals
take advantage of these emerging opportunities. There are two
types or levels of courses that can be taken in this program.
The first is online professional development short-courses that
can be completed in 4-6 hours. These include the Principles of
Energy Curing Technologies which is a basic overview of radiation curable technology and the Basics of UV Curable 3D
Printing which is an introduction to the very current topic of 3D
printing. I teach both of these courses and they are focused on
those who are new to this technology.
For those wanting more in-depth knowledge, RCP offers
three advanced online courses that provide foundational and
advanced treatment of current and emerging UV/EB curing
principles and applications. These courses offer three 500-level credits each. These courses are the Introduction to Polymer
Coatings, Radiation Curing of Polymer Technologies and
Radiation Curing Equipment, Instrumentation and Safety. The
advanced courses are taught by experts in the area and like myself are based in industry. The advanced courses may be taken
for graduate credit or as non-credit professional development.
Thank you for the opportunity to contribute to the article in Coatings World on radiation curable coatings. To me
this technology is as exciting today as it was when I first became active in radiation curable coatings in the mid 1980s.
Of course there has been amazing advances in the chemistry,
equipment and process since that time. To me, this is an indication that there still is an attractive future for both end users
and developers in radiation curing. CW

Dr. Mike J. Idacavage received his B.S. (Chemistry) from Drexel

University in 1975 and his Ph.D. from Syracuse University in
1979 (Organometallic Chemistry). His work in the area of radiation curing started at Eastman Chemicals with the establishment
of a photopolymer lab in 1985. In 2003, Idacavage received the
Presidents Award for Outstanding Achievements to the Radiation
Curing Industry from RadTech North America. He has served as
president of RadTech North America for the 2009 to 2010 term.
Currently, he is the vice president of business development with a
focus on industrial coatings, 3D Printing resins and adhesives for
PL Industries, a division of Esstech Inc. He is also an adjunct associate professor at SUNY-ESF in Syracuse, NY teaching courses
in UV and EB curing technology.

Resins Market Update

Increasing home and automotive sales are helping the resins market make gains.
Catherine Diamond, Associate Editor

he resins market is expected to continue its steady recovery thanks largely to gains made in both the housing and
automotive markets.
The architectural coatings market showed mid-single-digit growth in 2014, said John J. Hiel, Arkema Coating Resins
North American marketing manager. Existing home sales is the
most predictive leading indicator of architectural coatings demand and 2014s total fell short of 2013.
However, this was offset by continued strong unit turnover
and property upkeep demands in the multi-family market, as
a result of increased mobility of renters. The industrial resins
market continued its slow recovery, with the automotive market
being particularly strong again in 2014.
Julie Fuell, coatings sales director at Reichhold, said that
though she believes the coatings sector is slowly recovering from
the economic downturn and volumes are up in certain markets
for the first quarter of 2015. We are optimistic that the increase
in consumer confidence seen in March will continue to improve
sales growth for the balance of 2015.
Richard Stanley, commercial director at DIC International
(USA), said that his company has seen organic growth in existing applications, particularly in the automotive and consumer
electronics sectors.
Housing market improvements and lower oil prices are driving signs of recovery in all the categories of resins: industrial,
architectural and special purpose, said Yasmin Sayed-Sweet, vice
president of sales and marketing at Alberdingk Boley.

Striking a Balance
As the market continues to recover, balancing customer need with
rising manufacturing costs is of prime importance for suppliers.
Brad McPhee, vice president of sales and marketing at Specialty
Polymer, said that his company continues to see demand for performance improvements and technical solutions to help customers differentiate and achieve sustainable, profitable growth.
Weve also seen an increase in new customers who are looking to diversify their supplier base and increase their exposure
to innovation and better service options, he said. In order to
meet customer needs, we continue to invest in our business to
meet demand. In 2014, we added new talent to our R&D, Sales
and Tech Service organizations and broke ground on a significant capacity expansion to our Chester, South Carolina plant.

Shenton King, director of marketing at King Industries, said

that cost performance and global regulatory compliance are key
drivers for customers.
Cost performance is of the utmost importance to our customers, King said. Creating multi-functional and cost effective
products are always attractive to our customers. Customer requirements include compliance with global regulations, such as REACH
in Europe, ENCS for Japan, IECSC for China, as well as newly
adapted REACH compliance standards for Korea and Taiwan.
Chris Petrangeli, Americas sales manager at Sartomer
Americas, said that customers have been looking to capitalize
on falling oil prices, particularly in the first quarter of 2015.
Many innovative markets continue to push for property and
performance enhancements as they seek product differentiation
and improvements. Soft touch/ feel, fingerprint resistance, low
dielectric and other properties continue to have high interest
and demand, he said.
Reichholds Fuell said, Although there are cost increases associated with the actual resin manufacturing process, the primary driver for rising cost lies within the raw materials needed to
produce environmentally friendly yet high-performance resins.
This is more evident in certain types of chemistries which is why
Reichhold strives to offer customers a breadth of resin technologies to meet both their performance and cost requirements.
Stanley, of DIC International, said, Customers see resins as
the component in a formation that is likely to determine the

Sustainable Solutions

DIC Internationals Stanley said that light-weighting in the

automotive sector is one of the most satisfying areas the company is working in. Polymers and composites are replacing
metal in automotive construction. In turn, we will drive down
fuel consumption with lighter and more aerodynamic vehicle
designs, he said.
Arkema has developed a line of products under the EnVia
trade name that are suitable for use in formulations for sustainable paints, coatings, adhesives, sealants and construction products. According to Hiel, each EnVia product must pass a rigorous
certification program in order to meet the following requirements:
Have no added alkyl phenol ethoxylate (APEO) surfactants
Have no added formaldehyde or formaldehyde donors
Have total latex VOC < 5 g/L
Are below regulatory reporting limits for carcinogens, reproductive toxins and ozone depleting compounds
Have Low residual monomer levels - Total Monomer <
500 ppm
Minimize use of hazardous substances
- Green Seal hazardous components < 0.01% by per
component
- California Prop 65 substances are minimized and documented with data available upon request
- Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAPS) < 0.1%
- No known added phthalates, triphenyl or tributyl tins,
1,2 dichlorobenzene

Stricter environmental regulations have led to the need for increasingly lower VOCs, and resins suppliers have responded by
providing the market with green technologies.
King, of King Industries, said that his company strives to be
on the forefront of resin technology where VOC compliant coatings in both U.S. and EU markets are concerned.
Our new lower viscosity K-FLEX XM-332 and XM-366
specialty diol resin modifiers for solventless and high solids applications are offered at 100 percent active, and are highly effective at improving hardness while maintaining good flexibility.
They provide the formulator with additional tools to formulate
low VOC and ultra-high solids coatings, he said.
For our customers who are formulating waterborne coatings,
their performance needs are typically very demanding. We continue to develop new diols designed specifically for water based
applications. K-FLEX UD350W and K-FLEX XM-386 are both
soluble in water without a neutralizing amine, co-solvent, or a
surfactant, and impart hardness and chemical resistance.
Our K-FLEX polyester diols are extremely effective at compatibilizing other resins, which are not soluble in certain solvents (including exempt solvents), or with other incompatible
resins where the need for compatiblization directly effects VOC
compliance, King concluded.
Sayed-Sweet of Alberdingk Boley said that the company incorporates renewable castor and linseed oil into its PUDs, as well
design solvent-free PUDs with low cosolvent demands. Whereas
in the emulsions category, we continue to innovate and design
multiphase and self-cross linking technology platforms for hydrophobic, fast drying and stain resistances, Sayed-Sweet said.

Petrangeli, of Sartomer, said that he feels VOC reduction has,

in fact, lessened in priority across most segments that have traditionally held that concern.
Sartomer continues to have the largest offering for VOC
reduction for those markets seeking to enhance the properties
of their high VOC formulas or reduce VOCs as a strategy, he
said. Environmentally friendly, sustainable products continue
to be of interest, but have not begun to drive the market activities. Sartomer continues to offer and develop additional offerings to compliment the SARBIO line of products that contain
sustainable raw materials.
Beyond our ongoing effort to custom build high performance, low VOC emulsions, said McPhee of Specialty Polymers,
we have seen a growing interest from customers that rely on
solvent-based technology to help them build a green product
line. Specialty Polymers is also proud of our continued effort
to build high performance, low VOC emulsions. We are also
involved in several non-conventional coatings markets were the
sole purpose of our technology is to provide green solutions.
Scott Cooley, coatings technology director at Reichhold, said
that the companys fastest-growing product line in the North
American coatings market is BECKOSOL AQ, which he attributes to its low VOC profile, the renewable raw materials used
to make each unique polymer and exceptional performance in
formulated paints all while being competitively priced.
Additionally, Reichhold sells water-based epoxy esters under the EPOTUF trademark and water-based oil modified urethanes under the UROTUF F trademark, he said.

functionality of a coating. Therefore, resins are considered the

first place to look for innovation and we invest resources in
bringing new functionality to customers. In turn, this enables
both parties to stay competitive.
Its difficult to hold a lowest cost position and to constantly innovate. We tend to focus our attention on projects that are
driven by innovation and specifically tailored to the end users
needs, he concluded.
Resins suppliers are being pushed towards increased functionality and high-performance products, according to Hiel at
Arkema. In architectural coatings, customers are seeking better
washability and dirt pickup resistance. In industrial applications, there continues to be strong interest in improved corrosion resistance. Arkema has an extremely broad toolbox of
chemistries, which allows us to offer the optimal solution for
that customers needs- giving them the best balance of performance and value. We in turn work very closely with our suppliers to provide us with new, cost-effective raw materials, he said.
Alberdingk Boleys Sayed-Sweet said that plunging oil prices
and lower feedstock prices are causing customers to demand
lower resin prices, as well as resins with near-zero VOC. To
address these demands we continue to innovate with emulsions
and polyurethane dispersions to address these demands. Lower
cost is still the primary driver, she said.

BASF Continues to
Evaluate Natural Gas-Based
Investment on U.S. Gulf
Coast
BASF has made progress in its plans to
build a world-scale methane-to-propylene complex on the U.S. Gulf Coast. The
company has selected Freeport, Texas, as
the potential site. It will use Air Liquides
proprietary Lurgi MegaMethanol and
Methanol-to-Propylene (MTP) technologies. BASF has contracted Air Liquide to
provide basic engineering services for this
gas-to-propylene complex.
The plant is planned to have an annual production capacity of approximately
475,000 metric tons of propylene. This
project would be BASFs largest singleplant investment to date and is subject to
final approval in 2016 by the BASF Board
of Executive Directors.
The Freeport site was founded in 1958
as the first BASF manufacturing facility
outside of Europe. With more than 800
full-time employees, the Freeport site is
one of two BASF Verbund sites in North

America and uses propylene in its manufacturing processes. The on-purpose

production of propylene to supply the
companys North American operations
would allow BASF to take advantage of
low gas prices resulting from U.S. shale
gas production.
The investment would further
strengthen BASFs backward integration
into propylene and grow its propylenebased downstream activities, leading
to a stronger market position in North
America. Propylene is one of the most
important basic chemicals in the petrochemical industry and is used in the production of a wide range of higher-value
chemicals. These chemicals are used to
manufacture products such as coatings,
detergents and superabsorbent polymers
for baby diapers.

and effective fire protection for their finished goods.

Pekoflam HFC p is an organic
phosphorous/nitrogen compound with
excellent performance on synthetic
materials, including polyamide fibers
and blends. The unique chemistry displays higher efficiency compared to
commonly used nitrogen and/or phosphorous based chemicals. It is also applicable in water-based systems as well
as in Oeko-Tex Standard 100 compliant green solvent based coating systems, hence offers a higher flexibility
to fabric coaters serving different enduse segments. The ecological profile
enables use in both indirect and direct
skin contact applications.
The primary advantage of Pekoflam
HFC is its ability to combine the effects
and properties of selected halogenated
and non-halogenated technologies in a
fire protection solution for various coating polymers. Pekoflam HFC thus offers
a sustainable long-term alternative for
synthetic textile applications, meeting
the criteria of the Oeko-Tex Standard

Netherlands;
Xendo,
the
Netherlands; UPM, Finland, and
Enviplan, Germany. These partners will collaborate to develop
cost and energy-efficient technologies for
water purification, removal and productrecovery needed to support downstream
processing in white biotechnology.
Using biotechnological methods
such as fermentation or biocatalysis, in
most cases the renewable-based products are produced as part of complex
dilute aqueous mixtures from which
they have to be purified. This includes
the removal of a vast amount of water,
making the downstream process energy
intensive as it often requires many complex consecutive separation steps and
thus hampers the cost-competitiveness
of products from renewable resources.
Furthermore, processing methods developed for chemical production are often
used which are insufficiently adapted to
biotechnological processes.
PRODIAS aims to address these
challenges by developing and implementing cost-effective separation and
purification technologies tailored for
renewable resources in white biotechnology production processes. Its focus
is to adapt separation techniques to the
need of white biotechnology products
and to design novel hybrid systems
combining individual advantages, for
example, selectivity and energy efficiency. The bioreactions (fermentations) and biocatalysis by which the
valuable products are produced are
subject to alteration and optimization,
to enable more efficient and resourcesaving downstream processing.
The total project budget is approximately 14 million with the European
Union contributing 10 million. EU
funding of the PRODIAS project is enabled via the Public-Private Partnership
with SPIRE (Sustainable Process Industry
through Resource and Energy Efficiency).
SPIRE, in turn, is part of Horizon 2020,
the EU framework program for research
and innovation, which runs from 2014 to
2020 and comprises an 80 billion budget. In partnership with industry, the EU
will invest in innovative technologies for
sustainable processes. CW

Cardolite Introduces
Cashew Nutshell Liquidbased Polyols for Coatings
Cardolite has introduced a comprehensive line of cashew nutshell liquid (CNSL)
based polyols for adhesives, coatings,
foam and elastomer applications. Polyols
derived from CNSL have unique qualities compared to widely known polyester
and polyether polyols, and other natural
based polyols, the company stated.
Hydrophobicity is one key advantage
provided by the long aliphatic side chain
present in CNSL. This hydrophobicity
reduces moisture sensitivity during cure
with isocyanate and results in outstanding water resistance for increased durability of the final polyurethane product.
Different from other renewable polyols
obtained from soy and castor oil, CNSL
based polyols have an aromatic structure
that translates into excellent chemical
and thermal resistance. Moreover, the
combination of aromaticity and long aliphatic chain delivers hydrolytic stability
and high tensile, compression, and flexural strength to CNSL-based polyols.
This new product line is comprised of
diols, and medium and high functionality

polyols. CNSL diols can be formulated

into flexible foams, elastomers and adhesives and sealants or used as a building
block to produce polyurethane pre-polymers. Medium and high functionality
Novolac and Mannich CNSL polyols are
recommended in rigid foam formulations
to enhance flame resistance, compression
strength and reduce cost of the overall formulation by minimizing the use of expensive catalysts and surfactants. Specially
modified high strength CNSL polyols can
be formulated in structural construction
and automotive adhesives to achieve optimum performance. Furthermore, light
color CNSL polyols have been developed
based on Cardolites new Ultra LITE process technology. They have demonstrated
improved color stability suitable for industrial coatings and excellent chemical
resistance and mechanical properties to
meet strict requirements of high standard
polyurethane adhesives.

Introduces Bow Tie
Dispersers for Mixing
Heavy Pastes
Charles Ross & Son Co. has introduced
Ross Bow Tie Dispersers, also called
High Viscosity Dispersers, which are
designed for mixing heavy pastes and
viscous liquids. Compared to other single-shaft agitators, the company said this
economical Bow Tie Disperser is more
robust and heavy-duty, capable of handling viscosities up to several hundred
thousand centipoise.
Driven by an explosion-proof inverter-duty motor, the bow tie agitator
quickly wets out solids and incorporates
them into a liquid vehicle, creating a very
uniform consistency without running at
high speeds. This type of mixer is also
best suited for resuspending dense materials that have packed into layers during
storage or transit.
An air/oil hydraulic lift raises and
lowers the agitator into the vessel. Safety

PANalytical Introduces New

Spectrometer
PANalytical has revealed a new type
of analytical X-ray fluorescence (XRF)
spectrometer. With up to four complementary technologies on one multi-functional XRF platform, the new Zetium is
designed to change the way scientists
think about XRF analysis. The measurement platform of Zetium holds both
wavelength dispersive (WD) and energy
dispersive (ED) cores for the first time in
one instrument. Zetium can also include
a small spot analysis tool for fast element
distribution mapping, and the innovative
THETA free lime channel for dedicated
cement applications.
This unique combination of technologies not only matches the traditional
needs of XRF users, but offers a range of
new possibilities. For example, measuring
ED- and WDXRF simultaneously collects
all the data on a sample in one run, cutting
experimental time in up to half compared
to running two sequential analyses. For
industry-specific challenges such as those
found in cement production, the ability to
make traditional XRF measurements and
assess free lime in the same system delivers clear advantages. Importantly, whatever the application, Zetium is designed
to set new standards in terms of analytical power, usability and sustainability,
to users in process optimization, quality
control and research. Zetium is the successor to PANalyticals highly successful
Axios range of spectrometers and this
heritage of proven technology underpins
the new analytical platform.

Sico Paint Forecasts

Nature-Infused Colors for Spring

Rich floral colors are expected to be in full bloom this coming season not only in the garden, but in all elements of home decor.
Thats the forecast of SICO paint in unveiling its top colors for spring and summer 2015.
Think deep pastel tones, such as blue hydrangeas, dusty pink roses, saturated orange and turquoise peonies, sunflowers, clay
grey stones and reddish brown vines.
This seasons paint palette is filled with saturated colors, in both warm and cool tones, said Mylne Gvry, marketing manager for Sico paint, a brand of PPG Architectural Coatings. Its all about bringing colors of the garden inside and using them
in creative ways.
Topping Sico paints list of hot colors for spring and summer 2015 are Impetuous Blue (6022-41), Ningxia Pink (6052-52),
Dynastic Orange (6065-64), Blueberry Flower (6525-23), Dark Lemon (6098-64), Cotton Flower (6186-31), Stainless Steel (624121), Cayman Blue (6151-52), Sargasso Sea (6146-42) and Aperitif (6039-73).
To meet growing consumer demand for color-infused decor, Sico paint recently introduced the MUSE line, billed as the
brands best paint for rich colors. A paint-and-primer-in-one product, Sico Muse paint features a revolutionary TOUCH RESIST
TECHNOLOGY paint innovation that gives color surfaces unprecedented richness and depth while providing maximum resistance
to scratches, marks and stains. CW
