Decoding/Phonics Strategies
Decoding is the ability to apply
knowledge of letter-sound
relationships.
Phonics is one approach to reading
instruction that teaches students
the principles of letter-sound
relationships and how to sound out
words.

Suggested Activities
Play with magnetic letters.
Look at written materials around the
classroom and at school signs to see if
student can spot familiar words and
letter patterns.
Write notes to classmates and family.
Represent each sound you hear as you
write.
Sound out a word, pay close attention
to the print.

Sort pictures and objects by the sound
