Guidance for Written sample of no more than 3,000

words which demonstrates the applicants skills as a


researcher and/or shows skills in organising and
presenting research findings
This statement is a requirement only for PhD Scholarship applicants who are applying to
undertake a PhD linked to an agreed research topic as advertised. Candidates should
submit a statement along with their full application in lieu of the standard research
proposal; the statement should be no more than 3000 words.
Applicants are not restricted to a defined format for their statements, however, provided
below is a suggested structure:
Introduction
A brief overview of the applicants academic/personal background
o Applicants path leading to the decision to apply for the PhD
o Why they have chosen this project at Liverpool Hope University
Rationale for applying for the PhD
o Previous postgraduate level research experience
o Relevant skills are you bringing to the PhD
Academic Skills
Personal Skills
Research
References to relevant understanding of the research topic
Alignment with the relevant Research Centre/Department
Intellectual influences
o Key theorists, books or concepts which have influenced your thinking
Commitment
Statement of personal commitment to a substantial period of high level study
Relevant skills and experience to make the transition from undergraduate and
postgraduate taught to postgraduate research
What are your career plans?
Final Summary
Any other information which the applicant feels relevant and would like to be
considered by the review team
Applicants should be mindful of their target audience when completing the personal
statement. All statements will be reviewed by the interview panel which will consist of
the Dean, the Head of Department, plus the supervisory team for the project.
