Aarons, Andrew. "Sketchup Vs. Autocad." YourBusiness. AZCentral, n.d. Web. 14 Dec. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the main point discussed is the differences between AutoCAD and another
3D-modeling system called sketch-up. Sketch-ups importance is that it basically does the same
thing as AutoCAD, but a research study conducted when Sketch-up was released showed that it
had some issues. Issues such as compatibility problems when bringing projects in from other
CAD software and naming issues (Aarons) occurred, while AutoCAD has been running for
many years now and has not developed issues like that. Jeremy Cook, who is a robotics blogger
and also an expert in AutoCAD, says that AutoCAD should be used by mainly people who are in
the architectural or engineering field while sketch-up should be used by people who are in
interior design. The thing about sketch-up Cook says is that it has some limitations that
AutoCAD covers making AutoCAD better for bigger corporations.
Application to Research:
The importance of this article to my research is that it focusses on 3D-modeling software,
which is beneficial to me because I get to learn more about it because I have no access to it at
home or at my internship. Also, I want to focus research on different modeling techniques and
there incorporations to the time period.
Aitchison, Mathew. "Industrial Architecture Past and Present." A Design Manual Sacred
Buildings (2008): n. pag. Ashgate. Ashgate Publishing. Web. 22 Sept. 2015.
Summary:
In this journal the writer, Mathew Aitchison, discusses industrial building architecture in
both the perspective of past and present and how it has changed over the years. The discourse
and practice of architecture has fundamentally changed since the industrial revolution
(Aitchison). This quote shows were the turning point of architecture was, which the industrial
revolution was. What changed in the industrial revolution was the new relation between industry
and architecture and using architecture as a means to create working facilities that are both
efficient and productive. Also, in the journal the author talks about what an impact architecture
in industrial building has had an effect on the industrial urban population and regional planning.
Another point the journal makes is the fact that it is impossible to predict the future of
architecture in the industrial field because it is always changing.
Application to Research:
This journal is important to my research because it is a different source of information I
found and it is well detailed and developed in its nature. Also, if I wanted to I could contact the
author as one of my people for my business letter.

Aubin, Paul F. "AutoCAD Architecture Tutorials." Lynda.com. Lynda, 2015. Web. 03 Nov.
2015.
Summary:
In this video the main information that is shared is the basics of AutoCAD and how to
create objects and designs with it. The benefit of having Lynda is that it teaches me how to use
AutoCAD and some of the differences it has with Autodesk Inventor, which I am highly
proficient at. Since this is step by step I will work on it and complete some of the tasks that are
demonstrated in the tutorials. Also, the tutorial focuses on the use of AutoCAD in the
architectural sense and the features that architects may only use. This is beneficial because my
mentor works with AutoCAD and I will be able to understand the drawings on AutoCAD even
more and also be able to create them myself. Some of the topics that are included in the tutorials
are adding and offsetting walls, working with columns, adding stairs and railings, working with
the display system, setting up projects, using callouts, adding schedules and tags, creating
documentation, and printing and exporting (Aubin).
Application to Research:
Since my mentor uses AutoCAD and told me to work on it myself these tutorials would
help me to learn and be able to show my mentor that I know how to use AutoCAD. Some
tutorials I have found on YouTube were beneficial, but this tutorial series is very detailed and
informative.
AutoCAD 3D House Modeling Tutorial Beginner. Dir. Izuddin Osman. YouTube, 2015. Youtube
Video.
Summary:
In this video the creator demonstrates how a 3-Dimensional house is made in AutoCad.
The video demonstrates how the process of a house begins first with the layout and dimensioning
then it continues to move forward into more complex processes. Also, in this video the creator
shows the features of AutoCad, this has importance because it is vital to have information on
what is being used before understanding how it is being made. The video also covers how a
beginner would do basic operations in AutoCad, which I am because I know very little about
some of the complex features of it. Being able to know how to read AutoCad drawings is very
important in the architectural field because architecture is based on the drawings of others and
the video helps to show what a basic floor plan drawing looks like.
Application to Research:
This is video is important to my research because my mentor uses AutoCad and he
showed me how to use it and this video also shows me how to use just in case I did not
understand or remember what he had said.
AutoCAD Archives. Digital image. Amscad. AutoCAD, n.d. Web. 13 Oct. 2015.
Summary:
This image shows a basic floor plan in AutoCad, it shows many different aspects of a
drawing, which are very important for architects to understand because that is the way a building
is constructed in AutoCad. The image is basically a top view AutoCad drawing of a typical

house and there are different parts of the drawing such as the labels for each piece of information
such as the door swings radius and the labeling of the room lengths. The reason I am able to
understand all of the features in the drawing is because at my internship my mentor told me to
read a book about what every architect/contractor needs to include in a drawing and construction
piece, basically it was a set of guidelines and rules that need to be placed in every construction
project. The benefit of learning that information was because I was able to understand each piece
of information and why it was placed there.
Application to Research:
This source is beneficial to my research because it gives me an example of what my
mentor works with. Also, my mentor has made similar drawings on AutoCad that I have viewed
and seen final 3-Dimensional drawings of.
Baig, Zulfiqar. "Student Research Project." Personal interview. 19 Oct. 2015.
Summary:
In this interview with Mr. Baig I was able to learn firsthand information that would not
have been accessible to me online. Some of the questions I asked he answered very thoroughly
provided me with the necessary information to start to think about a more detailed research
question or hypothesis. Also, during this interview I was able to become more knowledgeable
through the research I did to find my questions because I had to look for very hard to find
questions or question topics that seem to be open ended and actually be answered with ones
opinion. With the interview questions I was able to find new ideas for myself that I may research
more on such as focusing on industrial complex conversions. By completing the interview I
learned more about what my mentor does himself, not just the basics, but also learning what he
believes about on some issues.
Application to Research:
This source is valuable to my research because it is one of the two human sources I have
gathered for my research. The benefit of having these human sources such as with an email or
interview, it allows me to have primary sources in my research paper rather than the typical
article or web page found online.
Basik, Cem. "Mini-Interview." Personal interview. 12 Dec. 2015.
Summary:
This was an interview done by myself for the mini-interview assignment. During the
interview we did discuss AutoCAD, but did not go in depth about it. The information that I did
get is beneficial because it showed me an important aspect of AutoCAD being used in the real
workplace and is a real world situation of AutoCAD in use. One thing that was discussed was the
drawings that could be made with AutoCAD. Mr. Basik said that when presenting his own ideas
to other Architects and Engineers he uses the AutoCAD drawings because they provide very
detailed features and the other members could easily add their own ideas and modify it at their
own ease. Also, I learned more about a branch of Architecture, the Architectural Design aspect.
This was important for me because it showed me something new about the Architectural field.

Application to Research:
This interview was very important to my research because it is a firsthand primary source
that I talked to myself, which gives my research a more professional feel to it. Also, this
interview allowed me to interact with others in the workplace.
CAD Drafting vs. Hand Drating in AutoCAD. CAD Drafting vs. Hand Drafting in AutoCAD.
SolidProfessor, 12 Sept. 2015. Web. 09 Dec. 2015.
Summary:
In this video main focus is on a function of Auto CAD, which I myself did not know of.
The function shown is how to hand draft in AutoCAD. From my practice in AutoCAD I have
created many models and construction pieces, but I did not know of the hand drafting the feature.
In the video the creator, who goes by the name, Solid Professor, shows how to use the hand
drafting feature and what capabilities it has to benefit architects and engineers. In the video their
also shows the difference there are between normal CAD and the hand drafting features. The
benefit of having this information in the video is that is shows the difference which is important
to notice if you are comparing the two. From my previous knowledge of hand drafting this is
very different because for one it is online software and the sketches look highly similar to
AutoCAD drawings, with just a few differences.
Application to Research:
The information that this video provides to me is important to my research because it is
important to acknowledge all of the different types of techniques to create hand drawings. Also,
this video shows why AutoCAD is beneficial to architects because they dont even need to
sketch pieces out by hand.
Consoli, Anthony. "Student Research Project." Message to the author. 12 Oct. 2015. E-mail.
Summary:
In this email from Anthony Consoli, who was my advisor last year for Independent
Research, helped me out with some information such as a new source and also some vital
information. I asked some preliminary questions such as How has architecture affected
industrial buildings? and In what ways has AutoCAD changed the architectural field and he
gave answers explaining why I should revise the second question and change AutoCAD to B.I.M
because by saying AutoCAD I am focusing on one specific company so he said by focusing on
B.I.M it is a whole field of software designing. Also, he said that Building simply addresses a
functional requirement while architecture elevates this effort to art and addresses its functionality
at numerous levels (program, site & historical context, environmental concerns, aesthetics)
(Consoli). Mr. Consoli in the email is basically saying that most industrial structures are
buildings but there are small percentages which are designed well enough to qualify as
architecture.
Application to Research:
The benefit of having this source is that it allows me to have a new correspondence for
my research other than my mentor. Also, since Mr.Consoli was my advisor last year he said that
he would be delighted to help me again this year with any questions I may have.

"The Conversion of a Factory into a Workplace." Dezeen ArchiplArchitects Converts Former

Washing Machine Factory into Lightfilled Workplace Comments. N.p., 22 Aug. 2015.
Web. 13 Sept. 2015.
Summary:
In this web page the main topic is an industrial factory being changed into an office
workplace type of setting. The web page explains, in detail how the conversion took place and
what aspects of the industrial building remained while others were taken away. "By preserving
the unfinished masonry, hence keeping the traces of construction visible, the history of this
industrial heritage has been partly visualized" (The Conversion of a Factory into a Workplace).
This quote addresses the change that has been taken place in the industrial factory, but also
acknowledges how the change shows the visibility of the old factory. This is important because it
shows how architecture can change the appearance of something, but also keep its importance as
heritage or history.
Application to Research:
This web page is vital to my research because it shows the industrial development
through architecture, but it also changes because it has changed into a workplace. Also, this web
page may provide other information about architecture because the home web page is a
architecture companys page.
Douglass-Jaimes, David. "This Conceptual Design Reinvents Power Plants as Mixed-Use
Megastructures." ArchDaily. N.p., 10 Jan. 2016. Web. 11 Jan. 2016.
Summary:
In this article the main point that is addressed in this is a new power plant design. This is
an industrial building to supply power for people while also functioning as a home for people. In
this article there are also drawings of the industrial power plant in both hand drawings and
AutoCAD. The main reason this article was chosen was because this is a real world situation of
both hand drawings and AutoCAD implementation and what they are truly used for. The
AutoCAD drawings and drawings in general are very professional and detailed to a very high
extent; the creator most likely used very professional designing software. Also, in the article are
some other points such as comparing the designs of the current power plants with those of this
new design.
Application to Research:
The main reason I chose this article was that it showed what hand drawings and
AutoCAD are used for in the real world. Also, this is an industrial plant, which I wanted to do
my research on in the past, but I can still tie it in now. This article is beneficial because it
provides a lot of information with the comparison of the two designs.
Gallina, Eric. "Mercedes-Benz Advanced Design Center of China." Form Trends. Form Trends
Inc, 4 Nov. 2014. Web. 6 Oct. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the author, Eric Gallina, describes the Mercedes-Benz Design Center in
Beijing, China. In the article the Gallina shows what the design center looks like and all the

features that are in it. The interesting part of the building itself is the fact the design for it is very
unique and different. Features such as the car catwalk are very interesting because it shows a
new type of design to the automotive industry. Some of the design software that the company
will use is going to be top of the line and the newest one out in the world. An important point the
article makes is the process that the industry will use to construct the cars which is compiled of
all sorts of different machines that will work in an assembly line function.
Application to Research:
The importance of this article to my research is that it focuses on a newly constructed
industrial building that is half way across the world. I find this extremely interesting because of
all the different features of the building itself and the software the mechanics use to draw up the
design of the cars. Also, some of the pictures of the building make the design center seem very
fascinating.
Gindis, Elliot. Up and Running with AutoCAD 2016: 2D and 3D Drawing and Modeling.
Waltham, MA: Academic, 2016. Print.
Summary:
In this book one can learn a variety of information starting from what AutoCAD actually
is to all of the features that it has. Also, in this book is information on the three-dimensional
features that Auto-CAD provides, which is very important because that is the main function that
should be known because it helps with isometric, oblique and perspective views of models. Not
only in this book does it show the features of AutoCAD, but it also shows the code and
programming for what is used and this is very helpful to the viewer because then one learns
where an idea originated from rather than being provided it. Some new features to me that I had
not used or seen in inventor or at my internship were clip and cameras. The benefit of having
this book is that I am learning new stuff that I may not have been able to see myself because my
mentor may not use the feature or something.
Application to Research:
This source is very beneficial to my research because it provides me with not only
information about AutoCAD, but also information also detailed information on many of its
hidden applications that I may have just looked over.
Grabowski, Ralph. The Illustrated AutoCAD 2007 Quick Reference. Clifton Park, NY: Thomson
Delmar Learning, 2007. Print.
Summary:
In this book, contains information about AutoCAD 2007 and the basic functions and
accessories that AutoCAD offers. Also, in the book are commands that are important for all
people who use AutoCAD to know. The importance of this book to me is that it is a new way for
to obtain information about AutoCAD, which I use on a daily basis at my internship. All
methods of accessing each command are featured, as well as commands not documented by
Autodesk (Grabowski). This shows the benefits of having a resource which offers me primary
information. Also, as stated in the book some of the functions that Autodesk has, but does not

explain, are in the book. This is important to me because I need to learn all functions to be able
to work with an architect.
Application to Research:
This book was given to me by my mentor because he wants me to learn as much as
possible about AutoCAD because he knows that it is what I am researching and also he wants to
me to practice a lot so then I will be able to progress to more difficult projects. Also, by reading
this book I expanded upon my own knowledge of AutoCAD, which will help me in the future.
Grisinger, Gordon. "Hand Drawing and Sketching in Today's Architectural Office." RSS.
Payette, 12 Feb. 2013. Web. 11 Jan. 2016.
Summary:
In this article the past of hand drawings is shown and what they were used for versus
what they have become now. In the past all architects needed to draw by hand because there was
no AutoCAD and this article shows the techniques and materials they used. Plan of Saint Gall
This is the only surviving major architectural drawing from the 700-year period between the fall
of the Roman Empire and the 13th century (Grisinger). This quote shows a building plan for a
Roman construction and it is the only surviving drawing from that time period. Even though it is
not that detailed it was made on clay of sorts versus now where everything is on paper. Also, the
article shows the transition to drawing software and what that did to hand drawings. In the article
there is also a rebuttal to how hand drawings still play an importance to architects and engineers
everywhere.
Application to Research:
I actually enjoyed reading this article because it shows how in this modernized world
there are still roots that connect us with the past, in this way it is hand drawings. Also, there are a
lot of pictures and examples of current and past drawings, which I could reference in my own
paper.
Groover, Mikell P., and Emory W. Zimmers. CAD/CAM: Computer-aided Design and
Manufacturing. Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice-Hall, 1984. Print.
Summary:
In this book I learned about the benefits that AutoCAD provides in any workplace that it
is located in. Some benefits that are listed are increase in the productivity of the designer,
improve the quality of the design, better communications, creating documentation of the
designing, creating the database for manufacturing, and saving of design data and drawings
(Groover). Each of the benefits listed also have an explanation to why each has such an
importance. Better communication with AutoCAD is through the technical drawings that are
available to make so that someone who wants to re-create a model or piece can do it with ease
rather than measuring and constructing themselves. Also, in the book are some functions that
make the AutoCAD software such an important and useful program in the work place.

Application to Research:
The importance this book as to my research is that it list all of the benefits of AutoCAD,
which is beneficial in a way to see how AutoCAD is actually changing the workplace and
helping architects and engineers worldwide.
Hill, John. "Hand Drawing in the Age of Computers." World Architects. EMagazine, 15 July
2013. Web. 29 Nov. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the main point that is addressed is the fact that hand drawings are fading
out of the working community of engineers and architects. Unlike computer models and the
renderings that come from them, hand-drawn sketches have the ability to define various
attributes of a designform, scale, space, and materialitywithout worrying about precision
(Hill). This quote addresses the benefits that hand drawings provide in this age of computer
software the enables people to express their own creativity without restrictions of measurements.
Also, in the article it address what can be done with hand drawings like how when there is
already a construction piece how we could add different designs or recommendations right on the
picture. My belief is that hand drawings are the basis for everything because they lay the
foundation to move onto a computer software program.
Application to Research:
The importance that this plays to my research is that it provides information on the
benefits of hand drawings, which I have seen very less of in all of my reading reports that I have
done. Also, this article has a variety of pictures that I can analyze and see the difference between
hand and AutoCAD drawings.
"Industrial Technology - Design Drafting." WSCC. Washington State Community College, n.d.
Web. 29 Sept. 2015.
Summary:
In this article by Washington State Community College (WSCC) addresses how
industrial designs are made and how they are drafted on CAD and also by hand. CAD is
integrated at all levels, from basic to advanced operation including three-dimensional (Industrial
Technology). This quote shows that through the career program of a drafter they use CAD
because it enables them to create 3D drawings of what they want to create in real life. The
importance of this article is that it shows me how the industrial drafting field works and what
specifications they have and what they do. Also, in the article it list some jobs where industrial
drafting is used such as Electronics Engineering, which may use drafting to create where power
lines in a building may go.
Application to Research:
This source is vital to my research because it shows what industrial drafting looks like
and this is basically the beginning of me researching industrial building designs rather than
industrial buildings themselves.

Iovine, Julie V. "How Today's Young Architects Are Building the Future." WSJ. N.p., 18 Aug.
2015. Web. 22 Sept. 2015.
Summary:
In this article Julie Iovine explains how the architecture field is opening up to new ideas
because of all of the young minds becoming involved with it. Iovine references many famous
architects that are making some important buildings right now like Zaha Hadid and how her
design for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was declined. The author discusses recent construction
pieces throughout the entire world from London to Queens to Tokyo. In this article there are
references to buildings that are currently being constructed and their importance to the
architectural field as a whole.
Application to Research:
This article is highly important to my research because it provides information about a
field of study that I want to go into in my future. Also, this article has many examples of
industrial buildings that are changing the world and how important their new-fangled designs are
overall.
Klaschka, Robert. "BIM - The Long View from Architectural and Design Practice." BIM: The
Long View from Architectural and Design Practice. NBS, Feb. 2011. Web. 03 Nov.
2015.
Summary:
In this article the author, Robert Klaschka, discusses the history and importance of
Building Information Modeling or BIM in his own architectural company. When BIM was
released, it was a huge success in his own company, but also he discusses some defects it had on
the architectural community themselves. For me the major factor standing in the way of the
market penetration of BIM is making it pay. Until a team of consultants can work more
profitably than their counterparts working with conventional CAD it will continue to hang in the
balance (Klaschka). Klaschka shows that BIM is becoming popular, but it is quite expensive in
its cost compared to CAD. By comparing the two different 3D modeling softwares one can see
that CAD is the more profitable one, but BIM may offer more with the outlines and datasheets it
offers.
Application to Research:
While using AutoCAD, my mentor also uses BIM because he says that it is more
accepted in the workplace and its functions are easier. I personally have worked only with
AutoCAD and find it to be beneficial in creating 3D models and completing its designated
functions.
Lepage, Mark R. "Is AutoCAD a Better Choice for Small Firm Architects?" Entrepreneur
Architect. EntreArch, LLC, 30 Apr. 2014. Web. 10 Nov. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the information provided mainly focuses on the benefits that AutoCAD has
to architects that are just starting up or small firm architects. In the article it states that AutoCAD

is beneficial to small firms, but as the firm progresses and becomes more advanced they should
begin shifting to B.I.M. or Sketchup. The article calls AutoCAD a part of the dinosaur
showing that AutoCAD is a very old program and that architects should begin switching to the
new age of Sketchup. The benefit that AutoCAD provides for people working in small
architectural firms is that it is a base for them to build on and that they should not take the leap to
a more complex software. Sketchup, explained in the article is seen to be more for the creative
side of architects where they can enable the creativity in themselves to flow. Also, Sketchup
provides designing in 3D and modeling in 3D, while AutoCAD designs in 2D and models in 3D,
which can be seen as inefficient.
Application to Research:
My mentor, who works in a self-run small architectural firm uses AutoCAD and I have
also used it and I feel that it is a good base that all new architects should start on. I have not yet
used Sketchup or B.I.M. but when I am going to go to my internship I will ask my mentor if he
has them so I can see them and learn more.
Piedra, Javier. "AutoCAD. vs AutoCAD Architecture vs. Revit vs. Sketchup." Arquitectura
Virtual, Productividad Digital. N.p., 03 Apr. 2014. Web. 10 Nov. 2015.
Summary:
In this article I was introduced to a new computer designing software, Revit. I have
never used or seen this program, but the article focuses on some of the different types of 3D
architectural designing softwares that are out in the world today: AutoCAD, AutoCAD
Architecture, Revit, Sketchup, and BIM. Some features that AutoCAD has that are very similar
to those of Revit are the addition of layers in a project. Layers are highly important because it is
important to know the different parts of a building and the layers function allows one to be able
to create a construction piece such as a house and have different layers like bathroom, living
room, and dining room.
Application to Research:
Since I am currently learning and using AutoCAD I have a sense of bias to the issue
because I have never used the other programs. I think that after I learn more about the other
softwares I could make a well-rounded conclusion about the different programs. Also, this
article will benefit me to see why AutoCAD is one of the more accepted softwares in the
architectural field.
"Print Master File Specification." PostScript Printer Description File Format Specification
(n.d.): n. pag. Partners.adobe. Adobe, 9 Feb. 1996. Web. 9 Dec. 2015.
Summary:
In this journal the main information is provided on the different sizes of paper. This
journal pertains to all of the different options of paper that are offered to architects and
engineers. Since there are all different types of paper sizes it is necessary to differentiate between
all of them because all of them have different uses. A normal hand sketch may be done on a
normal letter sized paper of 8 by 11 while a print out of an AutoCAD sketch may be printed
out on a 27 by 39. In the journal there is a list of all the different types of architectural paper

sizes, which is important to understand because if I want to become an architect I should know
about all of the different sizes. The importance of having all different sizes is that each has a
different use such as many of the larger paper sizes are used for printing or CAD and CAM
drawings, while smaller letter sizes may be used in the typical office.
Application to Research:
The importance that this journal has to my research is that my mentor told me the last
time I came that architects should know all of the different types of paper sizes so I did a reading
report on it. The information in this journal also pertains to my research because I could see how
CAD drawings vs hand drawings are put on to different printers and why.
"Revitology: The Evolution of Revit over AutoCAD." Architecturalevangelist. Architectural
Evangelist, n.d. Web. 14 Nov. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the main focus is on Revit, a computer designing software. This article is
important because it provides immense amounts of information about Revit because previously I
only had information about AutoCAD. Also, in this article is information about BIM, which I
have not yet obtained a book or dense article on. AutoCAD precision is great for mechanical or
industrial application. AutoCAD is a great tool for some things, but too many things can be
"faked" with it, concerns a veteran architect (Revitology: The Evolution of Revit over
AutoCAD). This quote shows how AutoCAD does not live up to its name because many things
can be faked with it, but with Revit there is more features and better 3D software. Overall this
article goes in depth about the features of Revit and how they differ from those offered b
AutoCAD.
Application to Research:
This importance of this article is that it allows me to view Revit from a new perspective
and learn more information that I had not known of before. Also, this resource will benefit me in
showing how AutoCAD may not be beneficial to architects.
Rory, Stott. "The Computer vs The Hand In Architectural Drawing: ArchDaily Readers
Respond." ArchDaily. ArchDaily, 05 May 2015. Web. 29 Sept. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the author, Rory Stott, shows how Computer Aided Design (CAD) is a
good program for architects to use, but it should not overtake the designing of buildings with pen
and pencil. Also, this article looks at the history of hand drawing construction pieces and
mentions many notable drafter and designers such as William Burges, who created the design for
the Truro Cathedral. The main aspect of hand drawing Stott acknowledges is that the creativity
that comes from the human mind itself when drawing cannot be replicated by a computer. This is
really important because it shows that a computer program cannot compare to the drawings of
the human hand, it can come close, but never better. The upsides to CAD that Stott mentions is
that it enables the architects or however is using it to create a three-dimensional sketch of a
design in minutes rather than hours sketching.

Application to Research:
I find this article highly intriguing because I have went through the process of using both
CAD and hand drawn sketches. This is important to my research because it shows what
industrial buildings start off as, a basic sketch, the only difference is that if it was hand drawn or
created by CAD.
Shakir, Rashid. "Mini-Interview." Personal interview. 19 Dec. 2015.
Summary:
This interview was done through the mini-interviews assignment and related to my
research. Before I even asked about hand drawings Mr. Shakir went right into stating that in the
past when he was in college and learning about engineering he had to use drawing paper and
different size pencils to create sketches to distribute. He also mentioned where the terms cut,
copy, and paste came from in AutoCAD; when engineers wanted to remove something and
place it on another drawing they used to cut the part they wanted, paste it onto the new drawing,
and then copy the drawing through a copier and make a blueprint. This process he stated was
very tedious and lengthy to do, but because of this technology we have it is now an ease task to
do. I then asked what benefits he thought that hand drawings had over was the side of creativity
communication because you are able to express your ideas right to someone else without the
middle man of the computer software.
Application to Research:
This interview was important to my research because it was highly related to my research
with the topics discussed on the benefits of AutoCAD and the counterclaim of the benefits of
hand drawings. The information I learned in this interview will provide me with necessary
knowledge to complete my research.
Stevens, Philip. "TOP 10 Transportation Hubs of 2013." Designboom. Designboom, 31 Dec.
2013. Web. 05 Sept. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the author, Phillip Stevens, goes through and describes each new means of
transportation in the next couple of years. This article provides a lot of information of how
transportation is changing and becoming more advanced for the coming ages of humanity. The
title of the article mentions the Top 10 Transportation Hubs of 2013, but in the article itself the
author mainly talks about the developing projects and ideas that have been conjured to benefit
transportation. The article really has a variety of places mentioned were many innovations and
transportation advancements will occur such as in London, Jordan, and Abu Dhabi. The benefit
of having these locations present is that it offers me the ability to go into more depth and find
what these new places have in relation to architecture. The main thing all the examples have in
common is that they need architects to draft the ideas, which is highly important.
Application to Research:
Over the past few days I began thinking of a more firmed up question for my research
and I have come to the conclusion I want to investigate the architectural developments of
transportation, industrial buildings, facilities and marine engineering. This article focuses on the

advancements/developments of transportation, which would be beneficial because it provides me

with examples of how the world is changing with architecture.
Tessitore, Enzo. "Hand vs. Computer Drawing: A Student's Opinion." ArchDaily. N.p., 11 Apr.
2015. Web. 29 Nov. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the view of a student is shown and how they believe why Hand Drawings
may be better than computer drawings. In the article there is no bias because it acknowledges
both sides of the argument and how in these modern days how the computer is a better to draw
projects. A point that is argued in the article is that hand drawings are very nice and clean, where
one can easily see the time and effort put into creating such a masterpiece, but it takes time to
create such a creation. Another point is that by using hand drawings it is very difficult to modify
the creation that is made because there is a lot of erasing and changing the drawing could mess
the entire sketch up. Also, in the article is the students who are learning hand drawings and also
the computer software that creates these drawings.
Application to Research:
The importance that this article is that it shows a students perspective on the issue of
hand drawings vs AutoCAD. This may become a piece of my research because one of my points
could be students versus professionals to see the difference. Also, since this article provides no
bias it helps me to become more rounded in my knowledge between the two techniques to draw.
Walker, Jarret. "Urban Designers Are from Mars, Transit Planners Are from Venus." 'Human
Transit' N.p., 11 Sept. 2012. Web. 05 Sept. 2015.
Summary:
This article focuses on transportation in urban areas and how it is very slow and in what
ways architectural design and development would be able to decrease the slow transportation
systems. Urban design is about something that will be built and completed. Transit planning is
about eternal operations (Walker). Walkers explains that how different urban design and transit
planning is and that they both need to work in coherence to benefit the greater good of
transportation. The article discusses how it is means of operations of a product or design that is
highly important such as a plane runway or a normal highway and their specific functions. Also,
the article discusses a financial perspective such as that if a service will be gone or forgot about
how it becomes a financial dilemma and ultimately not able to achieve that specific service.
Application to Research:
This article is vital to my research because it shows the development of architectural
transportation and how important it is becoming in urban areas. Also, even though this article
does not give specific examples it does a good job of explaining the relationship of architectural
transit ways.

Weisberg, David E. Chapter 8 Autodesk and AutoCAD (n.d.): n. pag. Cadhistory. 2006. Web. 13
Oct. 2015.
Summary:
In this journal the author, David Weisberg describes the history of AutoCAD and what
was before it and what it has become now. In 1979 the development of designing software was
thought of and how a graphic design program was a necessity for some fields. In the journal
Weisberg shows that in 1983 Autodesk was becoming a real popular company that was
becoming more noticed and accepted in the work place. Over time the Autodesk company started
to become more popular and soon was integrated into school curriculums and taught to student
studying basically any type of engineering or designing subjects. Some competing companies at
the time were: Auto-trol Technology (no longer in the CAD business), Applicon (acquired by
UGS), Computervision (acquired by PTC), Calma (acquired by Prime Computer then merged
with Computervision prior to the latter companys acquisition by PTC), and Intergraph
(Weisberg), but eventually they all died out and Autodesk succeeded.
Application to Research:
This source is vital to my research because it provides information on the history of the
Autodesk Company, which is the leading CAD Company in the world. Also, in the journal there
is a list of competitors which is beneficial to my research because I want to view some
competition of Autodesk.
"Winery in Oiry / Giovanni PACE Architecte." ArchDaily. N.p., 27 Aug. 2015. Web. 13 Sept.
2015.
Summary:
In this article the main aspect is the construction of a winery. This is important because it
shows the drafting of the winery itself and also construction pictures and CAD works. This
article is highly interesting because it shows the process of creating an industrial workplace,
which is related to architecture because it is the construction/designing done by the architects.
The article gives pictures and also explanations about what the buildings main functions are and
the sub-categories were brewing or fermentation may take place. The benefit of having a lot of
details in this article is that it gives a very spectacular explanation of the construction and were it
is taken place. On the upper level, from the walkways on the ground floor, we enjoy a
panoramic view of the landscape (Winery in Oiry / Giovanni PACE Architecte). This shows
that an industrial building can have some new perks to it such as the panoramic view, which
seems interesting.
Application to Research:
This article is beneficial to my research because it provides information about
architecture in the industrial workplace, which is important to my research because a part of my
research is the architectural development in industrial buildings. Also, this article is part of
Archdaily, which post articles about architecture a lot so this may assist my research.

Withers, James, and Lindsay D. "What Is Architectural Rendering?" WiseGeek. Conjecture, n.d.
Web. 06 Oct. 2015.
Summary:
In this article the authors discuss the importance of architectural renderings and what
architectural rendering is overall. The importance of architectural renderings is that they provide
architects with 3D environments in which they can work with and be able to critique designs and
brainstorm how to fix ideas that may be wrong. This software platform allows users to visualize
construction ideas in a three-dimensional format, to publish these ideas online, and to insert these
ideas into 3D maps (Withers). This description of architectural rendering really allows the
reader to grasp what architectural rendering actually is because it explains the function of it and
what one can accomplish doing with the aid of these software functions. Some other points the
article makes on the benefits of architectural renderings is that they help to calculate construction
cost such as how much material will be used, control elements of placement, carefully craft a 3dimensional model of something and many more.
Application to Research:
The importance of this article to my research is that it provides me with the necessary
information about renderings because I am leaning to completing my research on the pros and
cons of architectural aid in design, but I want to also focus on industrial buildings.
