The Book of Obadiah is the shortest book of the Old Testament consisting of only one chapter. Scholars believe it is one of the first of the prophetic writings.
Obadiah was a prophet of Judah, although not absolutely in certainty. There
are other men whose name was Obadiah but none of them are the same as the author of the book.
The main purpose of this book is a prophecy concerning the coming
judgment on Edom, the nation descended from Esau, who was Jacob’s brother. Eventually Edom and the Edomites disappeared from history, whereas Israel has continued throughout all ages.
