Indications

Colostomy
is
performed
for
decompression of obstructed colon
This procedure completely diverts the
fecal stream and permits efficient
cleansing and preparation of the
obstructed colon proximal to the lesion

Preoperative
Preparation

Since this procedure is usually performed

to relieve acute obstruction, the
preoperative preparation is limited to the
correction of the fluid and electrolyte
imbalance as well as blood volume deficits.
Flat and upright roentgenograms are
made. When in doubt, emergency barium
enema may be indicated to locate
conclusively the point of obstruction.

Preoperative
Preparation

A sigmoidoscopic or colonoscopic
examination may be done.
Antibiotics are given.
The patients is placed in a comfortable
supine position with the proposed site for
the incision presenting.
