Marine Coatings now offers a products for industrial businesses looking
to enhance worker safety and minimize
corrosion under insulation (CUI) risks.
Heat-Flex 3500 is a multipurpose
insulative acrylic coating for industrial
systems thats designed for both personnel protection and mitigating CUI. The
coating enables dangerously hot systems
like piping and ductwork to stay cool to
the touch, preventing burns and protecting the safety of personnel. It can be applied directly to ambient or hot surfaces
up to 350 F (177 C), offering plants the
flexibility to reduce downtime by keeping
systems online during coating and recoating applications. In addition, Heat-Flex
3500 also insulates hot and cold surfaces,
helping industrial processes retain heat
and preventing condensation on cold
surfaces by maintaining surface temperatures above the dew point.
The insulative and anti-corrosive
properties of Heat-Flex 3500 enable
plant owners to eliminate concerns related to CUI. The protective coating system
prevents corrosion-causing condensation
on the exterior of piping, ductwork, and
other surfaces wrapped in conventional
insulation and cladding. It performs so
well at mitigating corrosion that structures coated with Heat-Flex 3500 can be
removed from CUI inspection protocols.
Available in white and slate gray, HeatFlex 3500 is ideal for coating everything
from pipes, valves, tanks, vessels, heaters,
and boilers to compressors, pumps, containers, stacks, and ductwork that operate in temperature ranges between -80 F
and +350 F.
Heat-Flex 3500 goes on fast and easy
to save application time and costs. Its
single-component, waterborne acrylic
formulation can be applied with standard
airless equipment. Its very fast dry time
allows for recoating within two hours.

wood coatings in
Europe is looking

by 7 percent.
There has been a steep increase in
demand for some engineered woods in
northern European countries, which have
helped to widen the architectural potential of wood.
In Stockholm a joint venture of a contractor and house developer is planning to build
6,000 dwellings using engineered woods, including a 13-storey apartment block.
B&K Structures, a specialist in hybrid
materials structures, has been building
at Banyan Wharf, London, a 10-story
residential construction with a mix of
frames of steel and engineered wood. A
14-storey building of engineered wood in
Bergen, Norway, is due to be completed this year, while in Vienna a 24-story
tower of concrete and wood is also being
constructed for commercial use.
A major consequence of the greater
use of wood in a wider variety of building, both on their exteriors and in their
interiors, as well as in niches in the automobile, household appliance and signage
sectors is that wood coatings manufactures have to operate more on a bespoke
basis with architects and designers wanting customised products.
The outcome is a much more fragmented market. Of the 600,000 architects in
Europe, a growing number are becoming
aware of the benefits of wood components and then are wanting to specify the
paints and dyes to be used on them.
In the EU joinery and furniture industries alone, there are around 300,000
manufacturers, the vast majority of them
small-scale.
This fragmentation is helping SMEs
specializing in wood coatings, particularly those mainly serving local or
regional markets.
The bigger players have to rely on
networks of distributors. Also, to keep
up with the rising demand for customized products and constant innovation,
they require versatile R&D departments.
Italys IVM Group, based in Milan,
which, through its Milesi unit, is one of
Europes leading suppliers of wood coatings for professionals, spends 8 percent
of its revenue on R&D.
A possible consolation for wood
coatings manufacturers is that the surge
in sales of the new, engineered woods,
whose strands and fibers are restructured to form composite high-strength
materials, looks unlikely to necessitate
the development of complex new coatings formulations.
At present the ones proving to be
popular with architects and designers in
Europe are cross-linked timber (CLT),
glulam and thermally and chemically
modified woods.
CLT comprises layers of boards placed
cross-wise to adjacent layers, while glued
laminated timber or glulam consists of
several layers of timber of different dimensions stuck together with adhesives
to make vertical or horizontal columns as
strong as steel.
The big bonus for coatings manufacturers is that these woods are chemically
and physically more stable than conventional woods, explained a UK-based
timber consultant. The existing coatings
actually perform better on them and can
be applied with heavier loadings.
On the other hand coatings on engineered woods have a disadvantage in
respect to the contribution they make
to the sustainability of the woods. CLT,
glulam and others have a long service
life in buildings so that far lower energy
inputs are required than with other materials while they act as a means of storing carbon. But this gain comes far more
from the engineering of the wood itself
than the coating itself.
With conventional woods, coatings
have a much bigger role in extending the
service life of the woods, a quality which
would be reflected in the life cycle assessments (LCAs) of the coatings.

their peak production, the new capacity additions from upcoming projects are more
likely to sustain Angolas crude oil production around or slightly above current levels
over the medium term rather than provide a
substantial boost.
Six of the Angolan projects have reached
final investment decision (FID) phase with
EIA saying: Despite the recent drop in global
oil prices, projects that are past FID stage will
most likely not be cancelled because the procurement phase has already started.
In Nigeria, a country with 37 billion barrels of proved crude oil reserves, second only
to Libya, IOCs have unveiled nine offshore
oil and gas projects to be implemented over
the next five years and which are likely to
boost growth of the West African countrys
offshore oil and gas market.
Although the countrys controversial
Petroleum Industry Bill has held back several
of the planned projects, with only two having
been sanctioned by IOCs, the West African
economy presents one of the largest growth
opportunities for the offshore oil and gas
paints and coatings market.
The projects have a combined capacity of
1.1 million new productions in five years according to EIA.
In the new Frost & Sullivan report both
countries generated revenues of $675.1 million in 2014 earnings set to rise to $1,131.4
million in 2019 based on the study of the
offshore oil and gas facilities, dry docks and
fabrication yards.
The subsidization of manufacturing
makes Nigeria and Angola vital to the production of offshore oil and gas paints and coatings in Africa, with the goal of African needs
being fulfilled by African countries, said
Frost & Sullivan Chemicals and Materials research analyst Abdul-Baasit Abdullah.
The drop in crude oil prices has reduced
the base costs of paint through a reduction
in raw material cost of 8.3 percent, driving
competitive pricing and consumption.
Construction of local production facilities will be vital in order to ensure cost-competitiveness, as transportation costs of raw

Color Trends
Of course, durability and sustainability are key features when
selecting exterior coatings, but the actual color is the number
one concern for homeowners and business-owners alike.
PPG color experts have identified four of the most popular
residential exterior color combinations. These four color combinations are: Warm Neutrals: natural and authentic colors that are
inviting and gentle; Cool Neutrals: classic and stately colors that
are forever and noble; Gray Green Blue: colors of tranquility
and natural harmony that are serene and coasta; and Cream
Yellow Russet: warm, joyful colors that are friendly and cozy.
In addition to these home color trends, exterior glossy finishes are also trending for business owners who want to achieve
a high-end, premium look for their offices, which can be inviting and appealing to potential customers, said Dee Schlotter,
national color marketing manager, PPG Architectural Coatings,
U.S. and Canada.
Valspar noted its customers are looking for unique ways to
achieve a textured or patterned look by experimenting with different ways to use colors and prints. One of the ways were
meeting their needs is through our Fluropon Effects, specifically Kameleon and Nova coatings, said Alexander. Valspar
Kameleon coatings offer a prismatic, pearlescent finish to a
buildings exterior and appears to shift in color when viewed
from different angles or sunlight. Our Kameleon coatings are
also formulated with our standard 70 percent PVDF resin, ensuring durability as they dazzle in the sunlight. Similarly, Nova
is a 70 percent PVDF coating but offers a more richly saturated
color with a layer of sparkle in gold or silver. More recently,
weve witnessed an increase of roof panels that have patterns
and textures printed on their surface. Architects who want the
durability benefits of metal roofing paired with a particular appearance, like wood shake, slate, or tile, now have a solution
with Valspars printed coatings.
In residential coatings colors the largest exterior volume colors remain the same, Peterson said. But more and more builders are taking risks with color and combining materials. In the
Southeast, for example, they are highlighting otherwise disguised
architectural elements, such as gutters, with dark, bold colors
against mid-tone or lighter colors for a contrast. Much of this is
due to a business/competition strategy, but the consumer is also
tired of me too offerings. For nonresidential coatings, popular
colors include Hartford green in the Northeast, adobe or brick
red in the Southwest and forest green in the Northwest. Silver
metallic and copper metallic are also popular accent colors.
For exteriors, color is coming on strong from front door colors
to full home coloring, said Sara McLean, color marketing manager at Dunn-Edwards. Front doors are always great to highlight a

Coatings manufactuerers offers a wide variety of exterior architectural coatings, featuring enhanced performance options.
Valspar recently introduced two new lines to the family, Fluropon
Extreme and Fluropon Effects Nova coatings. Fluropon Extreme,
a smooth hard coat, is the most damage resistant coating Valspar
offers to date. Weve designed it to withstand the kinds of abrasions that occur both before and after installation. Fluropon
Extreme recently tested above and beyond current standards in
withstanding extreme wear conditions, said Alexander. It is a
great choice for a wide variety of uses; its especially well suited to
tough installation process such as roofing. Our other recent innovation, Fluropon Nova, is a color effect coating that offers richer
and deeper colors with an intense sparkle in gold or silver never
before seen in typical 70 percent PVDF architectural coatings
a patented pending formulation. Fluropon Nova maintains the
durability and color matching features architects and contractors
have come to depend on, but with an added shimmer and brilliant
finish that is sure to turn heads.
The PPG Pittsburgh Paints brand recently introduced its reformulated, premium line of REGENCY Paint + Primer-In-One
acrylic latex paints, which includes exterior and interior/exterior
formulations. Regency Exterior provides maximum protection
against weathering and outdoor conditions, while maintaining a
freshly painted appearance through outstanding color retention
and resistance to dirt and dust, said John Trenta, senior brand
manager, PPG Pittsburgh Paints. Regency Interior/Exterior delivers lasting performance in a glossy finish with outstanding
adhesion, hardness and scrubbability, and it is ideal for painting
trim, cabinets, banisters, doors and molding.
Sherwin-Williams new Kem Aqua Fluor products are tailored for the burgeoning vinyl window market, and combine
a wide array of colors with performance, durability and ease
of application and handling for the manufacturer. SherwinWilliams SHER-NAR 5000 Architectural Baking Enamel and
Kem-Aqua BP Siding Plus offer unique-to-the-industry benefits
to both building product manufacturers and end users that provide product reliability and sustainable advantages.

White and yellow traffic markings,
used for the demarcation of traffic,
are a common sight on most roads. In
North America the majority of traffic
markings are applied as paint to the
road surface.
Before traffic marking paint can
be approved for use it must be submitted for evaluation to ensure that
it conforms to federal and/or state
specifications. Testing includes the
application of transverse traffic marking to test decks exposed to a high
volume of vehicular traffic and the
elements, as part of the National
Transportation Product Evaluation
Program (NTPEP), and may last as
long as three years.
In an effort to reduce the time and
cost associated with developing higher
performance traffic marking paints,
abrasion resistance has been proposed
as an accelerated method for evaluating the durability of traffic markings.
It is a simple and inexpensive technique which yields highly reproducible
results in a short period of time. These
results correlate well with available
NTPEP test deck retroreflectivity and
durability ratings.
Abrasion resistance testing suggests
that traffic markings with 3 year durability could be achieved with a 15 wet
mil line if a high durability latex binder
was employed in the traffic marking
paint formulation.

Paint Formulations
Traffic marking paints utilized in this
work were prepared using the formulas
shown in Table 1. Three latexes (A, B and
C) with varying abrasion resistance were
included in the study.
Discussion
NTPEP Trials
The durability of the traffic marking paints
was assessed at numerous times throughout the two year trial. Figure 1 illustrates
November 2015
dramatically improve durability. Figure 8 illustrates the performance of a traffic marking paint based on a high abrasion resistance latex (Latex C). This approach would enable multi-year
performance without requiring the application of thicker lines.
Indeed the abrasion resistance data suggests that 3 year durability
could be achieved with a 15 wet mil line if a high durability latex
binder was employed in the traffic marking paint formulation.
Conclusions
Abrasion resistance appears to be a promising tool in the
development of new traffic marking paints. It is a simple
and inexpensive technique which yields highly reproducible
results in a short period of time. These results correlate well
with available NTPEP test deck retroreflectivity and durability ratings.

PG Industries aerospace coatings have been specified by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) for the initial production of its
HURKUS new-generation basic trainer for the Turkish Armed Forces, with the potential for additional aircraft if production
is extended.
Fifteen aircraft will be painted with DEFT military polyurethane topcoat and eco-friendly lead- and chromate-free epoxy primer
as well as specialty coatings for specific functionality to perform in the HURKUS trainer aircrafts demanding operating environment. These include high-solids DESOTHANE HS/CA 8100 abrasion-resistant topcoat, DESOTO high-temperature epoxy primer
and topcoat, DeSoto high-solids integral fuel tank coating, and an antistatic coating.
According to Mustafa Harman, PPG aerospace sales manager for Turkey, TAI is not only an original equipment manufacturer,
but also a key aviation industry subcontractor that is well acquainted with PPGs coatings as well as its sealants and transparencies. TAI chose PPG coatings for the HURKUS trainer aircraft because its experience has demonstrated the high quality of PPG
products and service, Harman said.
Through its acquisition of Deft Incorporated, PPG extended its portfolio of military coatings to include the Deft product line. CW
