Hello friends! Today I have something new and exciting to show you. These past few weeks you have been working
super hard on your word families. So far, you have learned all about the at word family, and the an word family.
Knowing those word families is super important, because once you understand a word family you are able to read, write
and create lots of words in that family!

(I do)

Instructional Input

Well today, I have a NEW word family to teach you! This word family is super important because knowing it will help you
to create many new rhyming words that you can use in your reading and writing. Sit up big and tall and show me that
you are ready to learn about this cool new word family.

What are you going to say (script content)?

How will you model the content in multiple
ways (differentiation)?

Vision for Student Engagement (How will students be

actively involved?)

*Use word family folder

Alright friends, so our new word family for this
week is the ad family. What is our new word
family for this week? Thats right!
Words in the ad family all rhyme because they all
have the same ending sound. Lets look at what
letters make up the ending sound in ad family
words. I bet we could read them together.
-read the two ending letters on the ad family card
Thats right, the two letters that make up the ending
sound in ad family words are A and D. What
sound do those to letters make together friends?
And what word family are the a part of? The ad

Students will answer questions about the ad word family

and spell out the ending sound in ad family words.

family of course!

Differentiation and Accommodations:

Guided Practice

Okay friends, now that we now that all words in the

ad family end in with letters A and D, we can use
what we learned to create some words together!
Here I have a blank space, and then the two letters
that are in all ad family words. Lets say the name
of each of those letters. Thats right, A and D.
Down here, we have lots of other letters we can
add to our letters A and D to create ad family
words. I am going to be looking for friends who are
sitting up big and tall to come up here and create
ad family words in our folder.

Students will come up to the front and create ad family

words using manipulatives

If I call your name, you get to come up here and

choose a letter from this pocket. Put it right here
over the blank space and read us the ad family
word that you created. Then we can all clap it out
to check if it is an ad family word!
-go through and practice multiple ad family words
Awesome job creating ad family words! You were
able to create so many different words now that
you know the rules of the ad family. Now we are
going to practice with pictures. I have some
pictures here of words that belong in the ad
family. If I call your name, Id like you to read the
ad family word on the card I show you. Then we
will all spell it as a group.
-go through ad family picture cards

Students will describe pictures using ad family words

Differentiation and Accommodations:

Allow students to choose which letter from the Word Family Folder they would like to work with.
Provide students with support by clapping out the sounds in the words to assist them in blending the sounds
together to create a word.

What will you ask (script) the students to do to

apply the content (differentiation)?

Independent Practice (You do)

Wow! You guys worked so hard and were able to

read a ton of ad family words and even created a
few of your own! Awesome work! I think you guys
are just about ad family experts by now. Track the
board now, because I am going to tell you how you
can show me all that you learned about the ad
family.

Vision for Student Engagement

Students will complete the handout independently

Here we have a worksheet on the what word

family are we working on friends? Thats right, the
ad family! You job is to circle all the ad family
words you can find over here, and then write them
down on the lines on the side. I want to see how
many ad family words you can come up with!
Lets read a few of these together. I am going to
point to a word, and I want you to THINK IN YOUR
HEAD about whether or not it is an ad family
word.

Students will ask and answer questions about the

worksheet

Okay friends that is your job for today. Before we

go, please turn to a partner and take turns telling
each other words that are in the ad family. I am
going to walk around and listen to what you are
saying, so make sure you are doing it!
