Multimedia Process
Purpose
The purpose of this multimedia project is to demonstrate through visual and audio
methods, how students can solve and substitute a variable in mathematics. The storyboard
created show a step by step static representation of solving and substituting for a variable to help
students go between slides to verify the step-by-step process. The video file purpose is to take
the concept of a storyboard and make it come to life through narration and real time solving and
substitution of a variable. Each of these multimedia files serve a specific purpose for this
instructional unit on variables in mathematics. Learners will be able to utilize these multimedia
files to review content related to knowing how to solve for a variable and substitute a value in for
a variable. Many students like to use technology and these multimedia files are a way to get them
engaged in the learning process

Instructional Objective
Task 1.0 Solving for a Variable
1.1 Solving equations
Performance Objective 1:
Given examples of how to solve an equation through a storyboard and multimedia
presentation, learners will observe and document the process of how to solve an
equation. Learners will accomplish this by utilizing a storyboard and multimedia
presentation to document the steps involved in solving for a variable.
Task 2.0 Substitution of a Variable
2.1 How to substitute for a variable
Performance Objective 2:

presentation, learners will observe and document the process of how to substitute
for a variable. Learners will accomplish this by utilizing a storyboard and
multimedia presentation to document the steps involved in substituting for a
variable.

Audience
Learners in an eighth grade mathematics classroom will be the primary audience of these
multimedia files. Each learner is at a different level in mathematics. Some have strong
background knowledge of variables, while others struggle to understand the fundamentals of
variables. Learners at this school have backgrounds where they have not had much access to
technology or internet resources. In recent months, students were given access to Chromebooks
to use in school and at home. With this technology implementation school wide, students now
have the ability to access the internet at school to research, complete assignments, and utilize
resources previously unknown or inaccessible to them.
Since the instructional unit is presented on a website, learners will be able to access this
information from any location, as long as they have access to a device and internet access (much
of which is freely available in public locations, public buildings, etc.). Learners with mobile
devices such as Smartphones or Tablets, will be able to access the information on the website as
it has been formatted to fit their device screens.

Software
In researching software, I came across several options to create the video for this
instructional unit, but settled on one that was already built into the computer: Quick Time on a
Mac. I chose this software since it had a built in screen capture option which allowed the capture

of the entire screen, or just a portion of it. In addition to the use of Quick Time for capturing the
screen and audio, I used software to create the walkthrough on solving and substituting for a
variable. A free software called Autodesk Sketchbook (http://www.sketchbook.com) was used in
addition to a piece of hardware already in my possession (Wacom Intuos Small Writing Tablet:
http://www.wacom.com). The writing tablet allowed the flexibility to write as I narrated, and
also allowed the use of multiple colors to enhance visuals for learners.

Storyboard Discussion

In creating the storyboard for this task, I looked at different methods to accomplish this. I
initially thought of creating a storyboard by using screen captured images and tying them
together in a PowerPoint presentation. I then looked at how storyboard software could be useful
for this task. I investigated the website http://www.storyboardthat.com to understand how the
software works, and what the finished product would look like. After navigating around the site
and producing a few prototype images, I chose to use this site to create the storyboard.
Storyboardthat allowed me to use pre-built images, scenes, and text boxes to help create a
seamless flow of information that will be presented to learners. The website also allowed me to
resize, rotate, and flip images to make each slide clearer and relevant.
Each slide of the storyboard is progressive starting from an introduction, solving for a
variable, substituting for a variable, and final thoughts. Each slide has a distinctive purpose to
demonstrate step-by-step how to solve a two-step equation and check work by substituting for
the variable that was solved. As learners look through each slide, they can see identifiable steps
in the process of solving for a variable and where common mistakes might arise.
