Course Description: The theatrical genre known as Musical Theatre is significant for a variety
of reasons. First, it is the most popular form of theatre in the United States; second, it is one of
few truly American art forms; third, it is arguably the most complex form of theatre, bringing
together a number of elements to create the whole. This course examines the history of this
important genre, from its origins through its Golden Age to present day controversies. We will
examine its elements and structure, as well as its creators. Students will be performing in a
Musical Revue that will be put on at the school. Performance dates TBD.
The following are some of the primary overall objectives of this course:
A. To obtain a brief overview of American musical theatre, with an emphasis on key
composers and shows that had the greatest influence on the genre.
B. To learn to differentiate between different genres of musical theatre and different types
of songs.
C. To be able to identify songs from some of Americas greatest musicals along with their
composers and lyricists.
D. To become familiar with the life and works of a given composer, which will be shared via
a group presentation
Materials Needed: Students will need paper and a writing instrument daily.
Class Policy: Students must be on time, with all materials, prepared for the days assignment,
and follow all policies as outlined in the student handbook. Anytime there is a problem with
inappropriate behavior, e.g. not following school policies or showing poor theatre etiquette,
citizenship and/or grades will be affected and student may be removed from class. Students
should not talk or be disruptive when the teacher is talking or when someone else is talking.
Students must raise hands to talk. Please, no food or drinks in class. Students should bring
water. For obvious reasons students may not have cell phones turned on in class. No electronic
toys will be permitted. Also, we only occasionally use iPads in class (NDJH only), they should
not be out unless we are using them. Any noise or distraction will result in confiscation of the
offending device. Parents will need to negotiate retrieval with the administration. Students will
be issued four hall pass cards per term; if not used, they can be turned in for extra credit.
School safety policies and dress code will also be enforced.

Class Expectations: While the majority of rehearsals will be done in class, students will
be required to attend some after school rehearsals. These may include: cleaning
rehearsals, run-throughs and dress rehearsals. These rehearsals are part of the students
grade. 2 weeks before the play opens we will have mandatory rehearsals. A rehearsal
schedule will be given out well in advance of that time. Students are required to attend
ALL performances! If students miss crucial rehearsals, Ms. Karlyn reserves the right to
remove them from the scene(s) they missed or the entire revue. If everyone becomes an
exception to the rule, chaos ensues. MEMORIZATION IS REQUIRED.
Students are also expected to read one play during the first term of the semester, and
attend one play during the second term. Students will fill out an analysis form after
reading and viewing these plays.
Late Work Policy: Late work will be accepted up to one week after the initial due date of an
assignment for 10% reduced credit. After 1 week, there will be a 20% reduction, after 2 weeks a
30% reduction, etc.. Students may turn in a late assignment with one of their hall passes
attached for full credit. This does not apply to performance assessments. Students will be
assigned performance days and are expected to attend class on their designated day and will
be penalized if they do not.
Absent Work: If a student is absent, it is his/her responsibility to get the work he/she missed.
Students will have two days for every one day they were absent to complete missed work. After
that it will be considered late.
Citizenship Policy: The basic citizenship policy will follow the school wide Citizenship Rubric.
Citizenship grades will largely be based on attendance, but student behavior will certainly be
taken into consideration.

H=Attends class ON TIME, no tardies, ALL assignments turned in on time, participates in class
activities, good example to peers, obeys class rules, goes the extra mile.

Instructional Information: Teaching methods include: lectures, notes, reading, film, hands-on
experience, improvisations, example and group discussion, there is a written exercise each day. All
tests and quizzes are from things covered in class. Topics may include: movement, voice, script
writing, dramatic structure and elements, script analysis and basic acting skills.
Service Hours: In order to better show the students the behind-the-scenes work required to put
together a production, each student is required to complete 1 HOUR of service this semester. This
service hour is to be donated toward the Theatre Department. Students can expect to be asked to
help paint sets, build props, organize costumes, etc. Organized service days will be announced in class
ahead of time so students may plan accordingly. These service hours will most likely be completed
after school, but there may be opportunities for completion in class.
