TIPS for Criterion D: Reflecting on the impact of Science

Describe the ways in which science is applied and used to address a specific problem
or issue.
Describe a problem or issue
Describe a solution to this problem / issue that is connected to our unit
Include scientific reasons and causes that link the problem to the solution
Include relevant case studies or examples
Briefly compare the chosen solution with an alternative solution
Discuss and analyse the implications of using science and its application to solve a
specific problem or issue, interacting with a factor.
Identify and discuss the positive impacts of using science to solve the problem relating
to one of the factors (Political, Social, Cultural, Moral, Ethical, Economic and
Environmental)
Use evidence from research to support the positive impacts
Identify and discuss the negative impacts of using science to solve the problem relating
to one of the factors (Political, Social, Cultural, Moral, Ethical, Economic and
Environmental)
Use evidence to support the negative impacts
Decide whether there are stronger arguments for positive or negative implications of
using the solution
Consistently apply scientific language to communicate understanding clearly and
precisely
Sentences flow and the meaning is clear
Clear paragraph structure and sequence of ideas
No spelling errors
No grammatical errors
Use of relevant keywords

Make sure this list only has sources you already cited in parenthesis ( ).
Make sure the first word in parentheses is also the first word in the entry on the works
cited list.
Works cited list does not have numbers, and is not organized into categories (i.e. books,
websites)
Works cited list is in alphabetical order
Works cited list has a hanging indent
Works cited list is double spaced
Follows the MLA system with the Authors surname first
Images have an in-text citation underneath
Sentences that use someone elses ideas have an in-text citation at the end before the
full stop.
For example: In the lab report the student has this fact from a website by author
Jenny Talia:
Chickens do not have a sternum of a shape that big muscles can attach to. (Talia)
And so, in the Works Cited list, the student has this entry:
Talia, Jenny. "Chicken Body Parts." New Book Of Popular Science. The New
Book of Popular Science. Scholastic Lib. 3 Aug. 2012 <http://go.grolier.com/>. Jan 13,
