Note: Points s hown below are for irrigation s ys tems ins talled throughout the des igned
lands cape. If only 50% of the des igned lands cape includes thes e meas ures , then only
50% of the points are available. Even if part of the yard is not lands caped, the irrigation
s ys tem mus t be s tubbed to that part of the yard, as appropriate.
2.1 High-efficiency irrigation system for mid-rise (0.5 point each, maximum 2
points ). Des ign and ins tall a high-efficiency irrigation s ys tem (bas ed on overall
lands caping plans , including meas ures adopted in SS 2) s uch that any of the following
are met:
a. Install an irrigation system designed by an EPA Water S ense c ertified professional.
b. Design and install an irrigation system with head-to-head c overage.
c . Install a c entral shut-off valve.
d. Install a submeter for the irrigation system.
e. Use drip irrigation for at least 50% of landsc ape planting beds to minimiz e evaporation.
f. Create separate z ones for eac h type of bedding area based on watering needs.
g. Install a timer or c ontroller that ac tivates the valves for eac h watering z one at the best time of day
to minimiz e evaporative losses while maintaining healthy plants and obeying loc al regulations and
water use guidanc e.
h. Install pressure-regulating devic es to maintain optimal pressure and prevent misting.
i. Utiliz e high-effic ienc y noz z les with an average distribution uniformity (DU) of at least 0.70. This may
inc lude c onventional rotors, multistream rotors, or high-effic ienc y spray heads, but the DU must be
verified by manufac turer doc umentation or third-party tests. A point sourc e (drip) irrigation system
should be c ounted as having a DU of 0.80.
j. Install c hec k valves in heads.
k. Install a moisture sensor c ontroller or rain delay c ontroller. For example, smart"
evapotranspiration c ontrollers rec eive radio, pager, or Internet signals to direc t the irrigation
system to replac e only the moisture that the landsc ape has lost bec ause of heat, wind, etc .
l. Perform a third-party inspec tion of the irrigation system in operation, inc luding observation of all of
the following:
a. All spray heads are operating and delivering water only to intended z ones.
b. Any switc hes or shut-off valves are working properly.
c . Any timers or c ontrollers are set properly.
d. Any irrigation systems are loc ated at least 2 feet from the building
e. Irrigation spray does not hit the building.
