Elements

So what is an atom?
An atom is a basic unit of matter
If you didnt know, matter is anything that takes up space

In fact, everything you see is made up of atoms!

Atoms are so small that we cannot see them with the
naked eye

What does the atom look like?

To the right is a drawing of an atom
The middle clump of dots is the nucleus
The nucleus is composed of
protons and neutrons
The green dots
revolving around
the nucleus are the
electrons

Wait! What did any of that mean?

So an atom is composed of three major things;
Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons

Protons are positively charged and are found in the nucleus

Neutrons have a neutral charge and are found in the
nucleus as well
Electrons have a negative charge and are found moving
around the nucleus

The Periodic Table

The periodic table contains all of the elements we
know of
Elements are atoms with different numbers of protons,
neutrons, and electrons
Elements are also the purest form of a
substance
Some elements you may know of:

Gold, Oxygen, Iron, Silver

Groups and Periods

Groups are the vertical columns of elements on the
periodic table
Periods are the horizontal rows of elements on the
periodic table

Atomic symbols on the periodic table

This is the element Hydrogen

So, what did we get from that?

Hydrogen has:
The atomic number of 1
This means that Hydrogen has 1 proton and 1
electron
The chemical symbol H
Has an atomic mass of approximately: 1.00794

Quick Recap
Atoms are the basic units of matter
Atoms are made up of protons (+), neutrons (+/-), and
electrons (-)
The periodic table displays all of the elements
Elements are atoms with varying numbers of electrons,
protons, and neutrons
The symbols on the periodic table show us several things
about the element
