Going for

BALANCE
When you thInk about It,
balance is such an impeccable word, its
almost meaningless. Does anyone
actually seek it? Is it attainable? Or do
people just throw the word around
because it makes them sound
enlightened?
Well, to go by this issue, people
actually go for it!
A boy and a girl meet, marry, and
bring into their marriage their separate
social concerns. This marks their
calendars with purposeful activities
with kids who arent at all family and
werent even friends to begin with. Yet it
is this elected connection with strangers
that gives this couples life, more than
sweet romance, a natural fullness. (P. 83)
Once upon a time four women gave
their all to their great loves, lost them,
then found the reserves to love again.
They gave themselves that second
chance, and recreated joy for
themselves, bringing back the balance
of living and loving. (P. 87)
Even a celebrity like Heart
Evangelista seeks happiness and peace,
and is willing to change course if that is
the way to find these. (P. 10)
Why, GH itself is also always striving
for that balance. So it shows you the
wonders of a Batanes family vacation
and prods you to spend on it, if only for
the powerful memories (P. 93), but in the
same issue it tells you how to be
financially fit so you can have your best
money year yet (P. 60).
Yes, its attainable. Not permanently
and not smoothly maybe, but it is.

New

BEGINNINGS
LAST YEAR, SOME OF THE GIRLS OF
Team GH decided to go on a 21-day No
Junk Food Challenge. It took me three
attempts before I could finally complete
it, but the experience taught me a few
things about reaching goals.
First, you have to be very specific.
You cant just say, Im giving up junk
food. What counts as junk food? In our
case, we werent allowed to have:
chocolate, candy, biscuits, cookies, cake,
donuts, muffins, pastries, white bread,
chips, fast food, peanut butter, spreads,
soda, or ice cream. For three weeks!
Second, you have to set yourself up
for success. I had to plan my meals and
snacks so that I would come to work
armed with fruits and nuts, instead of
popping into the nearby convenience
store for a bag of chips.
Third, you have to be accountable.
Declare your intentions on Facebook, or
have a friend do the challenge with you.
More importantly, you have to be
accountable to yourselfno excuses.
Fourth, if you fall off the wagon, just
pick yourself up and start over. So, if you
caved and ate that free cake at the office
because it was someones birthday, you
can always go back to Day 1.
I find that these four tips can be
applicable to any resolution. The last
one, in particular, is a reminder to be
gentle with yourself, and to allow
yourself to have a do-over when needed.
After all, whether its January 1st or
December 31st, every day is a chance at
a new beginning.

I love your recipes in the October issue! Just perfect for the
November and December festivities. I also liked your story about
couples who work out. Na-inspire kaming mag-asawa! And oh,
I was touched about the girl who writes to and collects letters for
the elderly. Lolos and lolas have a special place in my heart so that
one was just heartwarming. Thanks, GH!

ANSWERED
Its good to be
honest with your
boss, but too
much honesty may
backfire against
you.

CA R E E R C O U N S E L

I STARTED INTERVIEWING WITH A REALLY GOOD

COMPANY, AND IT LOOKS LIKE I MAY RESIGN FROM
MY PRESENT JOB IF IT GIVES ME A GOOD OFFER. SHOULD
I GIVE MY BOSS SOME WARNING SO I CAN START LOOKING
FOR A REPLACEMENT ALREADY?

There is no rule that says you need to ask permission from your employer or
boss that you are starting to search for other opportunities. You may have an
excellent relationship with your boss and your intentions of informing her of your
plans are good, but, unfortunately, your honesty may backfire against you. Your
boss needs to protect the interests of the business, and that includes investing in
employees who have long-term potential, and ensuring the success of their plans
in the future.
Once you signify that you may not stay on at your job, there is a chance that
management may no longer see you as a long-term potential for future promotions
or include you in confidential meetings for future plans. Even if you decide to
reject future potential offers, your employer may still doubt your loyalty to the
business, and it may take time to establish once again that you are there to stay.
Wait until youve signed the offer for this next job and passed the preemployment medical exam. Only then will this potential job be a sure thing. If you
want to give adequate warning to your current boss, then negotiate a later start
date with your new employer. This helps ensure proper turnover of your current
projects and responsibilities over at least one or two months. Malou Trenas Del
Castillo

Q Whats the best way

to answer the interview
question What are
your salary
expectations?
Ideally, one should defer
answering the question on
salary expectations until the
negotiation stage, and you are
the final shortlisted candidate.
You can simply say, Lets discuss
expectations when you are sure
that I am the right candidate
for the job. If the interviewer
insists, you may simply state an
annual range of your current
salary (I earn around P450,000
to 600,000 gross per year).
This helps you avoid the situation
wherein you state an overly
high salary expectation and the
employer gets turned off, or an
overly low salary, which puts you
at a disadvantage.
Find out as much as you can
about a potential job before
discussing salary expectations.
You also need to convince your
potential employer that you are
worth a good salary through
the interview process. Wait until
after the employer shows you
his offer before discussing your
expectations, and be sure these
are based on factors such as:
the job function, scope, level,
and responsibility;
your previous salary;
the current job market rate for
that role;
the financial capability of that
company to pay; and
extra benefits.
Negotiations should be based
on what you can do for an
employer, given your competency,
experience, and track record, and
not simply on an abstract increase
of certain percentages.

KEEP IT REAL

FA M I LY L AW

MY MARRIAGE HAS BEEN ANNULLED FOR TWO YEARS. MY

EX-HUSBAND AND I HAVE REMAINED CIVIL. WE HAVE TWO
TEEN DAUGHTERS WHOM HE SEES EVERY WEEKEND. HE SEEMS
TO HAVE A LESS RIGID HOUSEHOLD, MAKING ME THE STRICT
PARENT, WHICH MY DAUGHTERS HAVE NO PROBLEM IN STATING.
HE SOMETIMES OVERRIDES SOME OF MY RULES. I TALKED TO HIM
ABOUT IT, BUT IT STILL HAPPENS. WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Raising children can be a real challenge when parents are separated. But preserving
good communications with the father of your children can help you both collaborate on
being parents to your two daughters.
You are right in assuming that rules are ideally consistent for children as they are
growing up. This helps create predictability and routine. As children grow up, however,
we expect that they will learn to regulate themselves more and more. This opens up the
necessity of discussing, explaining, and eventually negotiating rules between parent and
teenager. As parents, we do need to clarify the importance of certain rules.
No matter how many times you tell your former spouse how you want him to raise
your children, he will make his own decisions about this. What you might find important
may not be deemed with equal weight in his eyes. As such, you can only explain to him
your reasons for implementing the same rules for your children, whether they are with
you or with him. It is up to him whether he will follow them or not.
Instead of focusing on your former spouses implementation of house rules, try
to focus on your children instead. One of your most important roles is to ensure
that they grow up to be independent, responsible, and disciplined individuals.
Engage your teenagers in the process of creating and taking responsibility for their
own rules. This entails open discussions, identifying possible consequences to
noncompliance, and evaluating the effectiveness of all these.
Part of the process of compliance to rules is to get your teenagers to buy in to
them. One sure way of getting their cooperation is to get them to make up their own
rules. First, engage them in open conversations when you are able to get them to
share their thoughts about the rules you have at home. Ask them how relevant the
rules are for them and what they think about your strict implementation of these.
Encourage them to speak freely and take what they say seriously. Second, you might
want to ask them to draft rules that they would like to follow for themselves. Third,
find out what these rules are and discuss how these can be implemented in your
home. If there are some items you wish to tweak, bring these up and negotiate with
them. In being open with them, we believe your children will also listen to you.
As you agree on the rules, you can find that each of your children might have specific
rules that apply only to them. This is perfectly all right.
Afterwards, you might want to discuss the consequences when these rules are not
followed. For example, your teenager might suggest that if she is unable to sleep by the
time of her curfew, she might need to sleep earlier the following night. You can try this
out for a couple of weeks, and evaluate how the new rules are working out for them.
Plan out a time when you will re-visit the rules and be open about adjusting the rules to
accommodate individual preferences and needs. Carry this out with the thought that
you are teaching your children to take responsibility for their own affairs. As you do this,
you are really teaching them to be more responsible and more independent. Boboy
Alianan and Vange Alianan-Bautista

province using the money I
send to them monthly.
however, the land still belongs
to a mother title, with no
individual title for it. My
parents only have a deed of

under my name?
You need to engage the service of a
land surveyor to do a re-survey and
the technical delineation of the area
you purchased to get it out of the
mother title. You will then be given
a technical description of your own
land area and, thereafter, you can
go to court to apply for the issuance
of a new title to you. The best place
to go to look for a surveyor is the
Bureau of Lands.

If you intend to stay in the

with respect to your son, you will
need to prove that at the time of his

Q My husband and I have been tryIng to get

pregnant for the past sIx Months, to no avaIl.
What are the tests he and I have to take to check
If theres anythIng Wrong?
See a fertility specialist for evaluation. The first thing the specialist will do is to take your
medical history, as well as your husbands. Your previous illnesses, surgeries, previous and
current medication, familial conditions, previous deliveries, and menstrual patterns will all be
recorded. It is important to talk about your occupation, habits, and lifestyle, especially the use
of alcohol, tobacco, and recreational drugs, as these may impact your fertility negatively.
A physical examination will subsequently be conducted. Anything relevant to fertility
will be noted, like pelvic masses, for example. Additional tests that can be carried out will
depend on the assessment of the specialist, and these may include a pelvic ultrasound, a
hysterosalpingogram (to test for blocks in your fallopian tube), and hormonal assays (if you
have menstrual irregularities), and analysis. Angela Sison-Aguilar M.D.

Q Most of the WoMen In My faMIly have scolIosIs,

and IM afraId My daughters WIll get It, too. If Its

genetIc, Is there any Way I can MInIMIze My
daughters rIsks?
Scoliosis tends to run in families. Among those conditions that need to be screened
as a potential cause of scoliosis are connective tissue disorders, such as Marfans
syndrome, neurologic conditions, and a condition that may manifest in the skin called
neurofibromatosisi. For those at risk, scoliosis screening (usually through the Forward
Bend Test, where the child is asked to bend at the waist, or an X-ray of the spine) is
recommended. What we need to prevent are the serious consequences of the condition,
should the spinal deformity progress. These include impairment in breathing, pain and
disability, and postural deformity that can affect height and aesthetics. Early detection
allows health professionals to intervene in a more conservative manner, through the
prescription of exercises to be done under the supervision of orthopedic specialists and
physical therapists. Back bracing is also an option, depending on the degree of scoliosis.
Hopefully, with appropriate and timely help, surgery to straighten the back can be avoided.

MY CHILDREN ARE
ALWAYS CONSTIPATED.
I'VE BEEN TRYING TO
MAKE THEM EAT MORE
FRUITS AND
VEGETABLES, BUT IT'S A
STRUGGLE. WHAT ELSE
CAN I DO TO HELP THEM
HAVE NORMAL BOWEL
MOVEMENTS?

Make it a priority to add

more fiber to their diets.
Lack of it is the primary
reason our children are
constipated.
Luckily, many
manufacturers now
incorporate fiber into many
food items that are readily
available in grocery stores,
including breakfast cereals.
Consider using them as an
additional source apart from
fruits and vegetables.
You can also try making
fruit shakes instead of juices
as the former keeps the fiber
intact.
To promote regular bowel
movements, it is essential
that habits are formed early
during toilet training.
Review your childrens
routine: Are they rushed in
the morning, thus limiting
their opportunity to go
to the toilet? Have they
been scolded before for
soiling their underwear,
making them associate
potty training with fear and
anxiety? Is the bathroom
too far or too inconvenient
to go to, or not fitted to
enable children to sit on
the toilet seat properly?
Resolving these may
promote regular habits
eventually. It is also
recommended that you
increase their water intake
and physical activity.

HER HAPPY

ENDING
Married life has been good to
Love Marie Ongpauco-Escudero. She has
not only created for herself a new career,
but she has also made for the Escudero
household a promising new beginning.

Its easy enough to underestImate her

strength and wIllfulness. On the outside, the star
known as Heart Evangelista looks very much like a China
doll princess, all fragile and delicate. Filipinos have a term
for ladies like her: Hindi makabasag pinggan. That she has
a lovely face and a melodious voice only adds to the illusion.
But as the past few years have shown, Heart can be as
strong as the bravest lioness. Her passion awakened, she
blossomed into her own person, surprising everyone by
reinventing herself into an empowered, empowering woman.

When Heart started going out with Senator Francis

Chiz Escudero in 2012, the public was both
surprised and fascinated by the unlikely pairing.
Apart from the two coming from different albeit
intersecting worlds, there was also the question of
age. He was, after all, 16 years older than her. But we
swooned and sighed as the twoa single dad of twins
and a lady still under her parents wingsfell
inexorably and irrevocably love.
We thought everything would work out fine and
dandy until Hearts parents, Cecile and Reynaldo
Ongpauco, grabbed the headlines the following
year, accusing Chiz of whisking their daughter away
from them. By then, Heart had moved out of the
condominium complex where her parents also
owned a unit. Many words were said, some of which
are best not recalled, but Heart stood by her man.
She got her own place, started managing her money
and career, and rediscovered her passion for art.
Fast forward two years, and we find Heart a
happily married woman with a burgeoning career in
the visual arts, a how-to book on beauty (This Is Me,
Love Marie with Summit Books), and a renewed
determination to take everything that came her way
in stride.
Looking back at the highs and lows of the past few
years of her life, she was very happy to discover her
inner strength. Heart says, Im really strong. Im a
strong woman. I think I was thrown into the lions pit
early, and I didnt think that I could be this strong
because Im very sheltered.
For many years, her parents did almost
everything for her, from managing her finances to
stocking up her pantry. Heart remembers the days
when shed open her refrigerator to find it full of
cooked food from the familys restaurant chain,
Barrio Fiesta. Indeed, she didnt even know what a
bank withdrawal slip looked like.
When Heart started living on her own, Chiz made
sure that he wouldnt act like her crutch as many,
her parents especially, feared. He taught her instead
to stand up on her own two feet.
She explains, Chiz didnt baby me. It was actually
a kind of tough love. He told me that the world isnt
at all happy-happy. Its a scary place, and you need
to learn because one day pag wala na ko, paano ka
na? You need to stand on your own. People thought
na para kong prinsesa na ganyan. No! I really had
to go through everything. Up to this day, when I
crywhich I hardly do, unlike beforewhen I cry,
Chiz would sit beside me and say, Well, you know
what to do next time. Hes not somebody wholl hug
you and let you cry more. No. You know what to do
next time, ha. Hes very practical, very, very.

Observations have been made about the swiftness

with which their romance was sealed in marriage,
but Heart disagrees. For her, the timing was perfect.
She explains, Ive been through so much more in
life. It was like something that kept on happening
over and over with my parents. They were always
against my relationships. I think thats normal, well
not to that extent, but for me, its natural that your
parents will protect you. I dont think anybody will
ever be good enough.

chizs love language isnt

affection. his love language
isnt gift-giving. his is service.
bumbilya ko, papalitan niya.
drainage ko, lilinisin niya. hes
so hands on.
It has been said that her parents did not approve
of her former beaus, actor Jericho Rosales and
model Daniel Matsunaga. Heart reportedly broke it
off with the two gentlemen to appease her parents.
But Heart was confident with her choice of Chiz,
who, she points out, shares the same down-toearth qualities of her father. She knew in her heart
that he was the one, and was more than willing to
fight for him.
She adds, I started young with life, with working.
Siguro, seventeen years na ko nagta-trabaho. I went
through life early. I think it was just the perfect
time. The day I got married, I was thirty. Thats
kinda how I planned my life. Its just that I really
had to pray a lot, really discern if this was really the
life I wanted.
Eventually, alls well that ends well with Heart, Chiz,
and her parents. Three months after she wed Chiz in
February 2015, the four had dinner together, and it
was as if nothing had happened. It was just very
natural, she recalls. We didnt talk about the past.
Nag-dinner kami, nagkuwentuhan kami,
nagtawanan... It was just normal.
It was like...family.

THE MARRIED HEART

Heart has adjusted to married life beautifully. She
says, I love it! I really love it! I feel so secure. I feel
so safe. In fact, I think as a woman, I blossomed
more when I got married... I have such a supportive
husband kasi. Hes not so needy with my time. Of
course, he expects me to have dinner prepared every
night especially when hes home kasi hes so busy na.

Kailangan laging mainit yung pagkain.

Kailangan nakahanda, lalo na lagi siyang
maraming meetings.
But Heart would be the first to tell you
that the Escudero household is still in a
transition phase of sorts. Because of space
constraints, Heart and Chiz have had to
sleep in one houseHeartswhile Chizs
children, eight-year-old Joaquin (Quino)
and Cecilia (Chesi), have had to sleep in
anotherChizs. Heart says, We dont fit
because I have so much stuff. I have a lot
of clothes. I have a lot of shoes. Although
she does have a spare bed, its too small for
the two gradeschoolers to fit in.
But because the two houses are just 120
steps away from each other, except for the
sleeping arrangement there is little
disruption to the familys everyday routine.
Heart describes a typical day: I wake up
at around 9 a.m. Chiz is up at 4:30 in the
morning every day, no matter what time he
sleeps. I have a very quiet morning. The
kids are usually at school... We see each
other, almost every day they go here.
Theyre also very busy with school. I usually
have meetings with clients. I have viewings
for my paintings. I allot around eight hours
of my day to finish certain deadlines on
paintings, ganyan.
Dinners they have at Hearts house. She
says Chiz likes things simple. For
instance, he likes Vienna sausage with
lots of sili. Ayaw niya masyado ng stiff
setting. Gusto niya homey, tsinelas at
shorts. Hes very like my dad. They have a
lot of similar likes.
Hopefully, this arrangement will soon be
remedied as Heart is in the process of
building her own house, something she
started before she got married. She says,
Ive been building this house before pa.
Matagal pa siya bago matapos. House ko
yon. But okay lang sa akin if they live with
me, I have no issues [with that].
We have a prenup. Tita Miriam
[Santiago, a senator] and my parents,
thats what they wanted when we were
about to get married. Yun yung sinabi
nila. I think its a smart move. He has
kids. I think that if anything happens, Im
not the type really to fight about things.
Okay na yon.
Modern couples now, they help each
other. Kung sino man yung mas okay
nitong panahon na to, tutulungan yung
isa. About the house, its no issue. They can
live with me. Its not so big, tama lang,
three bedrooms, sakto para sa amin.
In most Filipino homes, it is the mother

who manages the family purse. In the

Escudero household, Heart and Chiz share
this taskat the moment. Kasi now, we
handle two households, mahirap pa... I
want it to be a smooth transition for the
kids as well. Thats why Im excited also to
finish my house so we can all move in, and
that would be the real deal. Thats when I
feel that Chiz will hand over everything na
to me.
She adds, Ngayong hiwalay yung bahay
namin, mahirap ding gumalaw kasi hindi
ko alam kung paano ba sila. Iba yung
setup nila ng plates sa bahay nilayung sa
kanila nakataob, sa akin Yung mga
ganoon? Im very OC [obsessivecompulsive], as you can see. I dont want
to deal with that yet. Hayaan ko muna.

TITA HEART, CHIZS WIFE

New moms have nine months to prepare
for the coming of their little bundles of joy.
Heart became a mom the moment she
said I do. Chesi and Quino have now
become a part of Hearts life, and the three
of them have a grand old time enjoying
each other and learning from each other.
Heart says, I can never be their
mom-mom. Theyll always have their
mom but Im their Tita Heart. Im always
gonna be there for them.
Heart met the twins when they were
five. In the three years hence, they have
grown by leaps and bounds, and Heart has
been trying to catch up by doing her own
research on parenting and child
development. As she soon found out,
however, The less you study it, the more
natural it will be. I love kids. Im a kid at
heart. So I just do what is natural. Kids
nowadays are very smart, and they feel if
youre trying too hard.
So Heart found her way to Chesis and
Quinos hearts by being a kid just like them,
sometimes. She tells of their experiments in
the kitchen. I learned how to cook lasagna
with Chesi, so we were both guessing. We
cook together. I was trying to make
strawberry cheesecake and we ended up
with refrigerator cake, and we both laughed
about it kasi di namin siya mapatayo. Im
also learning with them and they like that.
They find it funny.
But because the twins are well
behaved in the first place, Heart says she
didnt have a difficult time adjusting to
them. At times though, keeping up with
the two can be challenging, especially

Painting
HER HEART
Its quite telling that Heart
Evangelista-Escudero
rediscovered her love for
painting at the height of her
spat with her parents. She
was feeling a lot of
emotions, and what better
way to let it all out than to
paint these emotions away?
That she had talent was
obvious. But did she have
the stamina for this
demanding art? Apparently,
Heart does, and today, she
proudly exclaims, Hindi na
siya hobby. I have
deadlines!
Heart explains, I feel
good. I feel really good that
Im doing other things aside
from acting. In this industry,
a beautiful face, thats a
dime a dozen and theyll
easily fall in love with
somebody else. But with a
painting, it immortalizes you.
Even as you get older, the
more precious they become.
And when you leave this
world, youve left something
behindwhat was in your
mind, what you imagined
was reality. Thats precious
to me. Thats how you do it.
Thats why I love painting.
Apart from private
commissions, Heart also
recently did the illustration
for a childrens book,
Daughter of the Sun and the
Moon. This month, the
couture gowns she painted
for fashion designer Mark
Bumgarner will make their
debut. And in February,
Heart will have an exhibit at
the Ayala Museum.
She says, Im so inspired.
Im very happy. My husband,
really he opens the world for
me to see. Hed always tell
me that if you really want to
do something, you just have
to work hard and
you can do it. So yun!

when they travel together. But Heart takes it one

day at a time, and sees this as practice when she
starts having her own.
When Heart said I do, she also had to open her
arms to the world of politics. She says, I never really
thought that Id marry somebody in politics. But
everythings balanced. I have a husband whos not a
political monster. When hes home, we dont talk
much about his work. In fact, there was a time that I
started getting too involved. I was too updated. It was
like a teleserye already. I wanted to know everything
that was going on, and he said, Hey, the reason why I
got married to you was that you were somebody who

To ensure her familys nutrition, Amanda

Griffin-Jacob uses only organic, natural
ingredients like Arla.

Throughout my life, I have

always been a cheese lover.
However, in recent years I
have found myself buying less
and less because most cheeses
and cheese-related products
have hormones and antibiotics
in them. Thats why I did a
happy dance when I heard
that ScanAsia was bringing
in Arlas new range of cheese
slices and cream cheeses. It
meant that I could feed my
kids cheese without worrying
about what might be in them.
Arlas dairy products only
have three to four ingredients
and are made with no
articial colorants, additives,
or preservatives. Arla is also
a farmer-owned cooperative,
which means they have control
over the whole manufacturing
process. Now thats quality
control.

At home, I use Arlas

Natural Mozzarella Slices
for my gluten-free pizza
dishes. I also use them for
my homemade vegetable
lasagnas along with Arlas
Organic Full Cream UHT
Milk for the cheese sauce.
My kids also enjoy
Arlas line of cream cheeses.
My youngest son loves the
pineapple cream cheese on
toasted gluten-free bread.
Kieran, who tends to like
things plain, is content with
the original avor on some
pita bread with a side of
carrot sticks.
As you can tell, dairy
is used in many dierent
dishes for my family. I have
total peace of mind using
Arlas all-natural and organic
dairy products for our meals
because I know and trust
that they are good for us. It
doesnt hurt that theyre super
delicious too!

Cooking with oil can be healthier;

its just a matter of finding the right
kind. Olive oil is a popular choice, but
theres another heart-healthy, more
budget-friendly option: Canola oil.
Its low in saturated fat, and high in
omega 3s and 6s, which help protect
against heart disease. Its got one of
the highest smoking points, so you
can deep fry without worrying about
burning the oil. And its neutral flavor
wont clash with the ingredients youre
cooking with. One to try: Jolly Heart
Mate Canola Oil. Use it for frying, for
making sauces and salad dressings,
and even for baking.
Jolly Heart Healthy Oil is available in
500ml, 1l, 2l, and 5l bottles. Available in

Whod have thought to make a smoothie using bread? Or

to use bread with fondue? The makers of Gardenia did.
Boasting of the countrys most modern and fully automated
bread manufacturing plant, it has creatively found more
ways to enjoy bread than just in sandwiches: toast several
pieces of bread, like the new Double Delight Strawberry

milk, and a little water. Blitz, and youve created a smoothie
with the flavors of strawberry, blueberry, and banana. Or cut

Massage FOR MILKING MOMS

Breastfeeding mommies, heres a spa treatment you shouldnt feel guilty about
spending on: Neo Day Spas Post-Natal with Lactation Massage combines milkmaking business with pleasure, and helps you reduce the risk for mastitis (or the
inflammation of the breast tissue), often caused by blocked milk ducts. The treatment
starts off with a full-body massage that uses a combination of aromatherapy and
lymphatic drainage techniques (its soothing for your post-pregnancy body), and
closes with a 30-minute breast massage. The trained therapist, positioned behind you
while youre seated, applies pressure around your breasts and toward the nipples to
promote milk flow and to loosen any clumps or hardened areas. Dont be surprised if
you leak milk! Bring your breast pump to maximize the immediate effects.
The Post-Natal with Lactation Massage costs P1,200/60 minutes and P1,750/90 minutes.
(You can also opt for just the Post-Natal Massage.) Neo Day Spa is located at 26th Street
corner 3rd Avenue, Bonifacio Global City, Taguig City. Visit neospa.net.

THE 2 MINUTES THAT

CAN SAVE YOUR LIFE

No matter how chained to your desk you feel, walk for two minutes
every hour. In a recent study, people who moved that much were 33
percent less likely to die of any cause. Its simple: Sitting requires
very little energy, so excess calories you consume arent burned
offtheyre stored as fat, says researcher Robin Marcus Ph.D., of
the University of Utah. This sets off a chain reaction that can lead
to a number of conditions, including high blood pressure. The good
news: On top of regular exercise, a trip to the water cooler can torch
hundreds of extra calories a weekand might just save your life.

makeso that those changes

happen, and stick. Bridges calls it
preseason weight loss, and sets
aside two to three weeks for the
prep work. Youll still get results,
dont worry. Ive seen clients
drop eight pounds during the
planning stages because they are
becoming more conscious and
they are getting real, she says.
Tackle these basic tasks before

Start a DIET

And eight steps to take when youre really ready to lose weight,
courtesy of a Biggest Loser Australia star.
By Betsy Stephens
THERE ARE DECISIONS you make rationally, with your cool-and-collected
self running the show. Then there are weight-loss resolutions, usually
declared in a highly emotional state, triggered by a wrestling match with a
pair of pants that no longer fit. Oh, the tears and cursing.
When the thought occursMust lose weight!rarely do women take a
moment to plan before leaping into action, says health and fitness expert
Michelle Bridges, the trainer famous all over Australia for the miracles she
works on that countrys version of The Biggest Loser. Instead, they begin
immediately, cutting out entire food groups by dinnertime and signing up
for a marathon without so much as a warm-up jog.
While every womans inner drill sergeant tells her that slimming down is
urgent and theres no time to wait, Bridges and other experts say it pays
to pause. The groundbreaking idea behind her 12-Week Body
Transformation program (12wbt.com) is to prepare your mind, your body,
your kitchen cabinets, and even your family for the changes you want to

Grab your iPad or a journal and write

down all the reasons you want to lose
weight, says Bridges. Think of this as a
bucket list for your future, slimmeddown self. What would you do if you
were to whittle away those extra
pounds? Go to your next college
reunion? Hike Machu Picchu? Have
more sex with your husband? Lower
your cholesterol and live a long, healthy
life? Bottom line: Its hard to stick to
healthy habits over the long haul if you
dont know what real, bigger rewards
youre working toward every time you,
say, pass up a cookie.

Do a body scan

This may be hard to believe when

youre staring in shock at the scale in
the doctors office or your bathroom,
but those three digits staring back at
you arent everything. In fact, the
reason we often give up on weight
losssometimes weeks, sometimes
hours after the Yikes! momentis our
focus on the pounds. Chris Powell, the
trainer on U.S. TV show Extreme
Weight Loss, says its important to
know a few other baseline numbers
before starting your slim-down plan;
some weeks, the scale wont budge, but
you can look back at all these stats and
gauge your progress:
The circumference of your chest,
waist, hips, and thighs.
Your clothing size (stretchy pants
dont count).
The time it takes to run/walk a mile.

Photographs by Getty Images (woman); iStockphoto (tape measure).

Dont be too
quick to jump
into diet mode!
Planning is crucial
to your success,
says an expert.

The number of push-ups and sit-ups

you can complete in one minute.

Find four teammates

You probably wont get the all-in

support youre expecting from friends
and family, cautions Susan AlbersBowling Psy.D., a psychologist at the
Womens Health Center at Cleveland
Clinic. So make sure you have at least
four key people on your side as you
approach weight loss:
One person to be your partner in
crime: say, a workout buddy who will
meet you for a post-dinner walk.
Ideally, this is someone whos trying to
lose weight herself.
One person to cheer you on: someone
you can call to celebrate your every
milestone.
One person to act as a role model: a
friend who has, for as long as youve
known her, seemed to have a health
halo over her, knowing exactly which
entre is the smart choice or which
cereal to buy. Observe and copy her!
One person to be your mentor: a pal
whos lost weight in the past and has
kept it offand will let you check in
with her regularly to share your
progress, help you stay accountable,
and get through moments of weakness.
(She knows, because shes been there.)
Choose your dream team wisely, Dr.
Albers-Bowling says. Be careful not to
recruit that friend or relative who will
ultimately be the one to say, Eh, youve
worked hard all week. Surely its okay
to finish off this box of Oreos with me.

Bust all your excuses

Nows the time to get it out on the

tableall the things youve told
yourself that have kept you from losing
weight in the past: I dont have time to
work out or cook healthy food; I cant
get up early; I cant exercise if my
children need me to drive them to
school; I cant run what if it rains?
Write your list down, says Bridges,
then come up with a plan to eliminate
each excuse. For example, you might
not be able to run in the rain, but you
can keep some DVDs on hand so you
dont have to miss your workout when
its pouring. If you still get stuck, reach
out to your teammatesthats what
they signed up for.

Start training your mind

This is the preseason weight-loss task

no woman ever thinks of: training her
mind to support the changes shes
going to make to her body. Every time
you catch yourself about to utter a
self-defeating phraseIm never going
to lose the weight!replace it with a
positive one, like I deserve to have a
healthy body or I am capable of
slimming down. This shift often
separates the losers from the winners,
says Thomas N. Bradbury Ph.D.,
coauthor of Love Me Slender and a
professor of psychology at the
University of California, Los Angeles.
After all, how will you ever make
progress if you dont believe you can? It
also helps to use affirmations to alter
your attitude about your new habits.
Instead of saying, I cant have the
burger, say, I choose to have a
satisfying, healthy salad. According to
Bradbury, This way, you are taking
charge of your diet. Its a much more
empowered approach to weight loss.

Have a pantry party

The only thing you need for this bash

is a bunch of plastic bags, Powell
says, because youre about to toss the
foods that led to pound creep. Dont
look so glum. Its a joyous occasion,
says Powell. Its symbolic of your
taking control of your weight destiny.
Not sure what to put in your bag? Start
with these: soda, ice cream, fruit juice,
fried food, candy, chips, andsorry,
peoplealcohol. Then ask yourself, Are
there any foods that always lead me to
want seconds or thirds? If, once you start
eating, you cant stop, thats probably a
good indicator that you should toss it.
Getting rid of food can be tricky,
especially if youre not the only person

who eats from the pantry. But experts

say that this preseason task works best
when your family gets on boardand
theyll survive just fine without their
Cheetos for a while. If they must buy
goodies that call to you, stash them in a
separate drawer and remind yourself
that, just like the clothes in their
dressers, theyre not yours.

Check your exercise gear

Awful, stretched-out yoga pants and a

decade-old running bra will not
motivate you to move more. Replace
and invest strategically. Also, scan
your kitchen. Do you need a healthy
cookbook, or a food scale to help
track portions? Your preseason
weight-loss mantra: stock up now, lose
more later.

Plan an exit strategy

It may seem premature, but experts

say you must think about what youre
going to do once you reach your goal
before you begin your weight-loss
program. Too often, women will see
their target weight on the scale,
think theyre in the clear, and
immediately fall back into eating
doughnuts for breakfast. So your last
preseason weight-loss task is to
decide how youre going to celebrate
your success at the end, but not with
the food that led to Crying Pants
Episode in the first place. Instead,
plan to do something thats in line
with your vision for your future,
healthier self. If that trek to Machu
Picchu seems a bit ambitious, picture
a scenic hike near your town and a
sushi dinner afterward. Or, hey, why
not a plane ticket to Peru? You
deserve it.

SUPER EASY
SLIM-DOWN IDEAS

Hack your way to a healthier, fitter body with these practical tips
and tricksall backed by science!

Serve food from the stove. Keep the big

bowls and serving platters in the cabinet;
you dont need them on the dining table,
says Brian Wansink Ph.D., director of the
Food and Brand Lab at Cornell University
and author of the book Slim by Design:
Mindless Eating Solutions for Everyday
Life. Having food on a stove or the
kitchen counterinstead of right in front of youmakes
you less likely to get up to snag seconds, causing you to
eat almost 20 percent less. Of course, you can make an
exception for your kids and set a serving plate
exclusively for them. (Hands off, daddy!)

Make time for lunch. If you dont have time

for a hearty breakfast on a typical weekday
morning, try to eat your major meal for the
day during lunch instead of dinner. In a
2015 study published in the International
Journal of Obesity, women who ate their main meal
after 4:30 p.m. burned fewer calories than those who
ate at 1 p.m. or earlier, even though the amount of
calories and level of activity was the same. More
reason to chomp earlier: the late eaters also had
decreased glucose tolerance, which makes them more
susceptible to diabetes.

Let the light in. Early morning sunlight is

good for your skin and bones, but did you
know it can also keep those extra pounds
away? According to a 2014 study from the
Northwestern University in Chicago, just 20
to 30 minutes of exposure to morning rays is enough
to regulate your bodys internal clock, which in turn
enhances your metabolism. Even better news: You
dont necessarily have to go out to soak up the sun;
just keeping the shades beside your bed open also
does the trick. The message is that you should get
more bright light between 8 a.m. and noon, says the
studys senior author, Phyllis C. Zee M.D.

Take your time during breaks. Downing your meals as fast

as you can may be good for your busy schedule, but not for
your body. According to a study published in the Journal of
the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2014, eating at a
leisurely pace is better as it effectively cuts down your
calorie intake by giving your body the time it needs to
process feelings of fullness (at least 20 minutes from the
moment you start eating!). Not only will you enjoy food
better when you eat more slowly, youll also be able to find
satisfaction in fewer servings. Plus, when you take time to
really chew your food, it becomes easier to digest, helping
you steer clear of bloating.

Downsize your plates

and utensils. The
diameter of your
plate does influence
how much you eat,
says Dr. Wansink, whos a food
behavior and psychology expert.
Since we naturally want to fill our
plates up with food, a smaller size
lets you get lessabout 22
percent less, for example, if you
switch from a 12-inch plate to a
10-inch one. Mind your serving
utensils, too. If you use a normal
tablespoon instead of a big
serving spoon to scoop from a
pot or platter, youll get about 14
percent less food.

Snack on fruitslots of it.

Aside from their known
nutritional benefits like
maintaining good eyesight
and a strong immune system,
fresh produce are naturally high in fiber
so you can eat a large quantity and still
consume very few calories, explains New
York City weight-loss specialist Howard
M. Shapiro M.D. in his book Picture
Perfect Weight Loss. Since they may
take up to 24 hours to pass through [your
digestive tract], they can take the edge
off your appetite (and thus reduce your
calorie count) for as much as a day, he
adds. Place a fruit bowl where you can
easily see it, so youre more inclined to
grab oneor three.

Turn off the TV.

Sure, its a fun way to
unwind, but watching
television during meals
is making you eat
more, and often
without you even
realizing it. (How can
you when so much is
happening on Game of
Thrones?) Past studies
reviewed by the
University of
Birmingham reveal that
on average, food
consumption increases
by about 10 percent
when you dine
distracted, and can
reach up to 50 percent.
Hit that off button and
enjoy some face-toface time with your
family instead.

Choose your seat wisely. At a restaurant, opt for a

table near the window or at a well-lit spot versus one
at a darker, more isolated area at the back. After
studying 27 restaurants in the U.S.,Dr. Wansink and
his team of researchers found that those who sit
farthest from the front door are less likely to make healthy food
choices. The darker it is, the more invisible you might feel, the
less easy it is to see how much youre eating, and the less
conspicuous or guilty you might feel, he says in his book. In
contrast, those who sit in brighter areas are more likely to order
more salads and fewer desserts.

Walk it off. Those

dishes can wait!
Various studies
show that going out
for a walk right after
dinner is good for
digestion and helps
you shed more
pounds. According
to research from the
International
Journal of General
Medicine, people
who took a brisk
30-minute walk
post-meal lost more
weight than those
who waited for an
hour. Set a quick
errand at night, like
picking up the
laundry or buying
ingredients for
tomorrows menu,
so you dont have
an excuse not to go.

42

10

Spice up your diet. That fire you

feel in your belly after devouring
a spicy entre can literally burn
your fats away. Researchers
from Wyoming found that
capsaicin, an active ingredient in
chili peppers, not only stimulates metabolism,
it also increases the production of brown fat,
which reportedly burns up to 300 calories in
24 hours. In our bodies, white fat cells store
energy and brown fat cells serve as
thermogenic (heat produced by burning fat)
machinery to burn stored fat, explains study
author Vivek Krishnan of the University of
Wyomings School of Pharmacy. In other
words, if you have more brown fat, you burn
more calories.

Sleep for an extra hour and a

half. Heres a legit reason to hit
the snooze button: Getting an
average of 96 extra minutes of
shuteye per night can help you
cut your sweet and salty junk
food cravings by a whopping 62 percent,
according to a 2014 study done on sleepdeprived and overweight adults. Researcher
Esra Tasali M.D. of the University of Chicago
Medicine says that when we dont get enough
rest, we incur metabolic cost for being awake,
and this causes us to compensate for the
energy loss by snackingunhealthily, too.
Sure, its not easy to find time for extra 1.5
hours of sleep, but you know what they say: If
theres a will, theres a way.

11

Focus on the finish line. Your daily jogs need not be dreadful; you just have to
keep your eye on the prize. According to a 2014 study, focusing on a specific
target while running or walking helps you get there faster since it makes the
finish line appear closer. People are less interested in exercise if physical
activity seems daunting, which can happen when distances to be walked
appear quite long, says New York Universitys Emy Balcetis, one of the studys
co-authors. So instead of merely counting the kilometers, keep focused on a
specific destination aheadbe it your best friends house, the neighborhood
caf, or your home sweet homeand youre more likely to enjoy and actually
finish your workout.

how I finally. . .

Took Charge of My Health

A cancer scare led this photographer on a journey
to a better mind, body, heart, and spirit.

ara Black seemed to

be doing fine. The
beauty and advertising
photographer, and
partner at Yes! Solar
Philippines thought she was already
living a healthy lifestyle, eating
what she considered nutritious
food and working out two or three
times a week. But the 35-year-old
got a wake-up call in 2013.
I had a general check-up that
revealed a suspicious mass in my left
breast. Since it was not palpable,
doctors could not determine from
a simple needle biopsy what it was.
It was recommended to me to have
an excision biopsy (surgery which
required general anesthesia), so I
did, she recalls.
It was a very scary experience
for me, having the surgery, and then
having to wait for two weeks for the
results, just sitting with the thought,
Am I dying?
Thankfully, the mass turned out to
be benign, but the experience jolted
Sara into action. When youre faced
with the fear of death on a very real
level, it puts you on a very easy plane
of wanting to make drastic changes.
On a conceptual level, my point of view
migrated from being passive/apathetic
to just being in a state of gratitude. I
have been given this body, now, in this
lifetime. In order to honor this gift with
the reverence it deserves, I need to
take care of it, she reflects. Genuinely
and sincerely embracing this simple
idea gave me a new direction in
which I wanted to steer my life and
consequently affected my actions.

eMBrAcing
enDOrPHins
Sara describes herself as being very
ignorant before she started making

changes. I abused my body for a

long timepoor diet, little exercise
and sleep, paid no attention to my
stress levels. I was just really in a
very ignorant frame of mind, and I
thought I was already taking good
care of myself! I was consuming a lot
of sugar in supposedly healthy places
like yogurt, wheat bread, and granola
bars. I never thought of addressing
my stress other than through quick-fix
ways like massages, which only really
skim stress off the top and dont help
you get to the root of the stress.
As much as possible, she tries to eat
raw, whole, unprocessed food, such as
organic vegetables, free-range eggs,
free-range organic chicken, beef, and
lamb, and whole grains like brown
rice and quinoa. A food intolerance
test revealed that she was intolerant
to gluten (found in wheat and grains),
which meant her body had a hard
time digesting it, causing her gut to
be inflamed. I cut out bread and
pasta. I substitute with brown rice
pasta, and if Im craving something
bread-y, Ill make a paleo banana
bread from scratch, she says.
Whereas before, Sara thought
of working out as a chore, she now
relishes the endorphin rush. When
I dont work out, I feel sluggish.
Its really been a process of slowly
building myself up, so from two to
three times a week to three times a
week, then four times a week. Also
increasing the amount of time slowly.
Its taken me two years to get to this
point, she says.
She started training for the 2015
New York Marathon, which meant she
would train five times a week. It is a
great experience. I highly recommend
it to anyone who wants to integrate
their body, mind, heart, and spirit
more, she enthuses.

Clean Eating
Sara Black shares what
her typical meals are like
in a day.

PRE-WORKOUT
The first thing I do
is have a green juice
with a spoonful of
VCO (virgin coconut
oil, which helps
slow the digestion
of carbs). This is my
perfect workout fuel;
it energizes me like
coffee.
POST-WORKOUT
I have organic grassfed whey protein
to help my muscles
repair. If Im still
hungry, Ill have Greek
yogurt (higher in
protein than regular
yogurt, which has a lot
of sugar) with some
fruit or a chia seed
pudding.
LUNCH Salad
SNACK If Im out on
location and I know
food will be tricky, I
bring hard-boiled eggs
and banana. I dont
normally have time to
snack because were
usually on go-go-go
mode at work, but if
Im hungry, Ill find fruit,
nuts, or Ill bring raw
cacao nibs from home.
DINNER Protein, so
chicken, fish, or beef
with clean carbs like a
salad, quinoa, brown
rice, or sweet potato.

The New York Marathon

was a transformative
experience for me, says
Sara. It was really the
journey, the process of
training, not so much the
destinationthe end goal
of 42 kilometersthat was
life-changing for me. I had
the very real and concrete
experience, as I completed
the marathon, that I am
limitless.

To this end, Sara started doing

transcendental meditation (a form
of meditation involving a mantra).
As of the interview, Sara had been
practicing it for nearly three months,
twice a day, 20 minutes each time.
The meditation has helped me
reduce stress levels and become more
centered, less affected by things out
of my control, she says. I also find
myself coming out of meditation with
more clarity of purposewhether it
be at work where I find myself more
creative and precise; more clarity
with my emotions also, and how best
to deal or proceed with a certain
situation or relationship.

OngOing PrOcess

Now that the marathon is over, she

continues to do some form of cardio,
like running, Bootcamp at Crossfit,
salsa, or Zumba once a week; weight
training once a week; yoga twice a
week; and a new workout she wants to
try out. I want to try touch rugby, pole
dancing, and electric cycling. So many
workouts, so little time! she says with
a laugh. I need to change it up. When I
get bored, I look for new activities to do
that inspire me.
On days when shes shooting on
location or doesnt have access to the
gym, she uses smartphone apps to do
15- to 20-minute workouts that make
use of body weight. I call them my
pantawid workouts. The point is to not

make excuses and work out even if

theres no time, no venue, no energy.
Just do it!

gOing DeePer
Sara stresses the importance of
viewing herself as an entire being,
not just addressing problems
specifically to my body, but to see
myself as a wholehow my body
is intertwined with my mind, my
emotions, and my spirit. I read this
book called The Creation of Health
by Caroline Myss, and it changed my
life by making me understand this
concept. You take care of yourself
holistically, and not just address
symptoms or separate parts of you.

Sara is still continuing to make

changes as she gains new knowledge.
She subscribes to free online health
newsletters (mercola.com and
mindbodygreen.com) to stay abreast
of the latest health news.
Im constantly looking for new
information to help me become better
and its really a work in progress
where I try different things on and see
if it works for me, basing it on simple
and real awareness of my body, mind,
heart, and spirit, she says. If it works
for me, I keep going. If not, I discard
and move on to the next.
She says she still allows herself to
give in every now and then. I struggle
every day with food temptations and
laziness to work out. Im not perfect
and I backslide, too, she admits,
citing the one-eighth of a donut she
just ate. Im a human being. I can
cheat. But I get right back on the
horse and keep going. The important
thing is not to bash yourself for those
weak moments. Just pick yourself up
and keep going. I am worthy of selflove, and I can work hard to own it.
What really fuels her desire to
keep going is gratitude. I am a
happier human being. It brings me
joy to have command of my life, to be
accountable for it, to be responsible
for it, to make it the best life I can
because it is a gift. Its the least I can
do to pay respect to this gift. I am so
grateful to be alive!

THE LONG BOB OR LOB

IF YOU HAVE LONG LOCKS AND ARE CONSIDERING

A CHOP (and youre afraid of going too short), this style is a
great entry point. On the other hand, its also a great way to
grow out a short style. The ideal length for a lob would be
somewhere around the shoulder to the collarbone, says
Hipolito, who adds that this style can be customized to suit any
face shape. However, women who have elongated face shapes
should have volume on the sides so as not to make their face
appear longer, or a fringe, he says. The best thing about this
style? Its very versatile. Shares Hipolito, It can be styled sleek
and straight, loose and wavy, or tousled and beachy. Bonus tip:
If you want a soft, textured look, opt for a layered lob versus a
straight, blunt cut. A little texturizing at the ends adds definition
to waves, and takes the weight out of heavy-looking, thick hair.

THE PIXIE CUT

ITS THE IDEAL DO FOR LADIES WHO WANT TO
MAKE A DRASTIC CHANGE, or for those craving for a
breezy style. But to make a pixie cut work, you have to make it
feminine, emphasizes Hipolito. For a soft finish, ask your stylist
to texturize the ends with layersinstead of a straight cutand
say no to the razor. Got wavy hair? No need to fret. The pixie
cut can work on someone with naturally curly or wavy hair, says
Hipolito. The natural movement of your strands actually lends a
younger vibe. (If you want a sleek look, though, youll need to
bring out your flat iron!) Dont let your face shape turn you off
from the style either. Hipolito has custom-cut short pixies on
round-faced clients by creating height at the top of the head to
give the illusion of length.

BANGS OR FRINGES

BANGS OR FRINGES CAN BE VERY TRICKY, admits

Hipolito, saying that there are lots of factors to consider before
going for a snip. These are: the size of your forehead, the texture
of your hair, your hair growth pattern, the density of your hair,
and your face shape. Got a cowlick or curly tresses? These may
make it trickier for you to wear a fringe, but its not impossible.
That said, its crucial to consult with an experienced stylist to
give you the right cut, and to educate yourself about styling. (If
youre looking for a low-maintenance cut, a fringe isnt one of
them.) Blunt, heavy bangs work best on thick locks, while a soft,
feathered cut suits those with thinner strands. If you dont want
a full-on fringe but like a little face-framing drama, side-swept
bangs are a great, easy-to-wear option.

QuickBEAUTY HACK

Got a zit? You can use your babys diaper rash cream, which usually
contains skin-soothing zinc oxide, to reduce the inflammation. Just
remember: its not a cure, just a temporary treatment. Your best
bets are still salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide.

DAMAGED
HAIR
In our quest to beautify our tresses, we often subject it to a bevy of
products and treatments, which, in the long run, only end up
damaging hair over time. The results? Limp locks, brittleness, split
ends, a washed-out color, and a dry scalp. But while some
drugstore products claim to remedy these, they can only do so
much; severe damage demands deep healingone thats best
achieved in the hands of experts. GH recommends: Krastase
Resistance Thrapiste (starts at P1,600), an in-salon ritual that
attributes its effectivity to KAPs or Keratin-Associated Proteins,
which are needed to revive and fortify hairs structure. Plus, it
contains the sap from a miraculous plant, the Myrothamnus
Flabellifolia, which is known for having the power to resurrect itself
even in severe droughts.
The treatment is available at the following salons: Krastase
Institute 6750 Ayala, Fabio Salsa Rockwell, Toni & Guy TriNoma,
and Essensuals Toni & Guy SM Megamall. For maintenance,
at-home products are also available.

DOES RUNNING
MAKE MY SKIN SAG?

UNFORTUNATELY, YES, says dermatologist

Kaycee Reyes M.D. of skincare clinic Luminisce
in Bonifacio Global City. Since its an intense
and high-impact aerobic activity, it causes a jolt
to the skin that leads to the breakdown of the
collagen, elastin, and hyaluronic acid
components that help keep skin plump and
elastic. Also, running outdoors predisposes you
to prolonged exposure to UV rays, which is the
number one cause of wrinkling, pigmentation,
and skin laxity, she adds. But dont fret; the
damage doesnt happen overnight, and it doesnt
mean you should give up your favorite workout.
Instead of a speedy run, you can just opt for a
brisk jog or walk; just make sure you slather on
a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF. Or,
schedule your workout in the evening instead.

MASTERING THE BASIC Brow

Heres all the infoand the toolsyou need to get started.

We put on makeup with one main goal in mind: to look well-groomed, presentable, and polished, says Archie Tolentino, makeup
stylist for NARS Cosmetics. This means going beyond simply swiping on some lipstick and wiggling on mascara. In order to
create a more balanced and put-together look, you need to learn how to define and shape your archeseven if it seems super
intimidating. We wont lieit probably wont be perfect the first few times you do it. But dont worry, with a little practice,
youll be able to master it soon enough. Use this brow chart as a starting point to find the best face-framing products for you.

WHAT ITS FOR

Its used to fill in sparse brows

naturally. Its easy to blend and the
color is buildable, says Ria Aquino,
M.A.C. Cosmetics affiliate artist. In
order to have more control over
application, experts recommend
using an angled brow brush with
firm bristles.

WHAT TO TRY

You dont know how to do your

brows at all! The soft effect is
forgiving, so any mistakes wont
be as noticeable. The catch?
It can wear off quickly,
says Aquino.

P2,280, Kanebo, Rustans The

you to mix and match the shades,
so it complements your skin tone
perfectly.

You want something thats

quick, easy, and almost foolproof. Once the tip is soft and
blunt, you can also use it to
lightly fill gaps and define
the shape of your brows,
adds Tolentino.

Benefit Cosmetics Instant Brow

Cosmetics, Greenbelt 5 1/L.
The spoolie on the other end
helps soften lines and blend
the product for a more
natural finish.

Bushy-browed ladies will like this

because it helps set arches, but
its also perfect for those with
scarce brow strands, says
Aquino. Go for a tinted formula if
you color your hairitll help
soften your features.

M.A.C. Cosmetics Brow Set in

Girl-Boy, P1,050, Rustans The
Beauty Source. Its got a cult
following for a reason! Its the
perfect color for Pinays and it
leaves your brows looking full
not crunchy or crusty.

Youre serious about getting your

eyebrows on point. Its rich in
pigment and can even tint your
strands lightly, so use this if you
want a more dramatic effect.

INGLOT AMC Brow Liner Gel,

P895, INGLOT, Glorietta 5, 1/L.
Its waterproof, so you can use
this even if youll be working up
a sweat at the gym.

You want precision application

or want to draw feathery
strands thatll thicken your
brows. I dont recommend this
for those with overplucked or
non-existent brows, since the
finish can look plastic-y or
shiny when you use too much,
says Tolentino.

K-Palette Lasting 2-Way

Eyebrow, P950, Beauty Bar,
Shangri-La Plaza 3/L. After you
use the pen to fill in your arches,
you can use the powder-tipped
end to go over the line again.
This will create a 3-D effect that
will make your arches look
thicker.

lets face it
From budgeting daily expenses to
paying off debts and decoding
investment risks and returns, money
management often seems like a
complicated concept. Daunted by
money, many avoid the subject despite
yearning for financial stability. But
T. Harv Eker, businessman and
motivational speaker, challenges this
mindset. It may not be the most
glamorous of topics, but it comes down
to this: the single biggest difference
between financial success and financial
failure is how well you manage your
money. Its simple: to master money, you
must manage money, he writes in
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind.* He
explains that the first step towards
financial growth and stability is, in fact,
working with what we have now. Rather
than say when I have plenty of money,
Ill begin to manage it, the reality is
when I begin to manage it, Ill have
plenty of money.

fresh pages in the calendar wait to be
filled with resolutions to change your
life for the better. What is it you want
to happen this yearfollow a regular
fitness program? Earn more frequent
flyer points and stamps in your
passport? Chronicle daily reflections in
a handwritten journal?
Of all the possible life-changing
goals, one of the most valuable you can
make is to get your finances in tip-top
shape. But we all know how easily such
resolutions can fall by the wayside,
whittled down to nothing more than
plans as soon as the excitement and
novelty of the New Year die down. In
fact, a U.S. study by the University of
Scranton in Pennsylvania reveals that
only 8% of those who make New Years
resolutions actually see them through
till the end of the year.
So how do you succeed in the
pursuit of true financial fitness? As
with any big task, it helps to break
it down into smaller, concrete steps
that will slowly but surely build up
until your great objective is within
your grasp. Here, we give you 10
steps to get your finances in a better
place by the end of the year. It wont
happen overnight, but with enough
commitment, determination, and
persistence, this could finally be your
year of complete and lasting financial
wellness.

Take time to go over every bill,
contract, and bank statement that you
accumulated in the past year. Maybe
you overspent on home renovations, or
invested a significant sum in a friends
business with the promise of a good
return. Whether your financial record
is rife with gains or mostly losses, its
crucial to lay all your cards on the
table to properly determine where
you are and where you want to go
financially.
The first key to financial success
is taking a good, hard, truthful look at

where you are now. Once you know

your starting point, you can plan a
strategy on how to move forward,
writes Kim Kiyosaki in the book Its
Rising Time! What It Really Takes for
the Reward of Financial Freedom.
Experts often point to the Statement
of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth
(SALN), a personal financial statement
that determines how much you actually
own, as a useful tool to help you get
started.
The SALN tells you what you
have to work with, says Efren Ll.
Cruz, a registered financial planner
and founder of the Personal Finance
Advisers Philippines Corporation.
(See Starting Point for a step-by-step
guide to coming up with your SALN.)

2 IdENTIFY YOuR
MONEY GOALS
After looking back to get a clear picture
of your present financial situation, its
time to look ahead.
You have to find out what you
need and want when it comes to your
money and your financial future,
writes Kiyosaki. The keyword is
you. Everyones financial situation is
different, she adds.
So, ask yourself: With what I have
right now, what do I intend to achieve?
They may be short-term objectives, like
a holiday trip or a down payment for
a house; or long-term goals such as a
comfortable retirement 10 to 20 years
from now, or a secure college fund for
your children. Whatever they are, jot
them down and commit to a plan to
get there.
A number of studies in the fields of
psychology and neuroscience show that
pinning down specific goalsmeaning,
being definite about the amount you
need and when you need itcan
effectively push you to achieve them.
Goal setting provides a concrete vision
and a reminder of the greater rewards
of your journey.

2 Indicate the value

4 Create a separate
column for your Liabilities.
Here, list down all loans

Here are some simple
tricks to make extra sure
you ace your financial
scorecard this year.
HAVE A MONEY JAR
Get into the habit of saving
with the help of an empty jar of
jamor whatevers available. At
home, place the receptacle in
an area thats safe but easy to
see, and preferably one youll
pass by regularly. Drop money
into it every day, whether its
a couple of hundreds or loose
change. As T. Harv Eker writes
in Secrets of the Millionaire
Mind, The amount doesnt
matter; the habit does.
SAY NO TO
CYBER-SHOPPING
For all the convenience that
online shopping affords, its
also a surefire way to rack up
debt. There may be some eyecatching discounts, but keep in
mind that the little things you
spend on eventually add up.
Help yourself avoid this pitfall
altogether by steering clear
of any online stores, at least
until you can justifiably include
shopping in your spending
plan again. It may also help
your cause to unsubscribe
from their newsletters and
promo updates.
SEEK PROFESSIONAL
ASSISTANCE
Consider tapping a certified
professional planner to
help you with your financial
strategy. Or follow programs
offered by organizations
such as Efren Ll. Cruzs
Personal Finance Advisers
Philippines Corporation. One
of its programs, called EnRich
365, is packaged as daily
SMS messages sent over a
year. Financial planner Cruz
shares, This would be a good
reminder for people to keep
on trucking as far as their
personal finance resolutions
are concerned.

those tens or hundreds of thousands

in debt will keep holding you back
from reaching financial nirvana if you
dont deal with them at the soonest
possible time.
The experts all say theres no better
time to start paying off your debts than
right now. The interest you pay on
credit card debt is silently siphoning
off funds that can be put to much
better use. Get over your credit card
debt once and for all, and regain full
control of your finances.
Kiyosaki presents a good way to
start: Pay off the smallest balance
on your list first. The fulfillment of
paying it in full will motivate you to
keep going. Kiyosaki is no stranger to
debt as she and her husband, Robert
Kiyosaki of Rich Dad Poor Dad fame,
experienced being buried in debt at
some point.
I wanted a win early on to prove
that I could do this, she shares. After
paying off the smallest balance, you can
then work your way up to the bigger
ones. The amount of time youll need to
pay everything off is dependent on the
amount of your credit card debtif its
huge, a year might not cut it. But as the
experts point out, the important thing is
to get started.
Another, more drastic, approach
is recommended by motivational
speaker and author Dave Ramsey in
his book The Financial Peace Planner:
Nip the debt problem in the bud
by letting go, or rather cutting up
all your credit cards. He recognizes
the benefits these cards provide
for consumers (such as easier flight
and accommodation bookings): It
wont be easy to give up the credit
card and debt habit, especially if
that is how you are used to making
ends meet. Still, he suggests finding
alternatives like debit cardsbut only
for payments of the virtual kind.
Another way to decrease, if not
completely eliminate, the frequency
of your credit card swipes is to use
cash. Consumers spend 12% more
on general purchases than they
would if they used cash for the same
purchases, Ramsey reveals. He notes
that the same increase in spending
applies to meals as well: Consumers
spend 54% more on food (eating out
and groceries) than they would if they
used cash.

4 dEvELOP BETTER
SAvING hABITS
One of the most basic and recognizable
rules in personal financial management
is to set aside money, and to do so as
often as you can. Realistically speaking,
however, we all know too well that this
can be easier said than done.
Financial planner Cruz says the best
way to successfully and consistently
funnel the bucks into your personal
treasury is to save first before you see
your money.
He adds that a change in perspective
could be all you need to encourage a
better saving routine, saying, Dont save,
say, 10% of your income. Tell yourself
that you will live off 90% of your income.
While the math is the same, the first
one is perceived as an outright loss. The
second one is seen as a foregone gain,
which will be easier to follow. Its just a
matter of framing the challenge.
On the other hand, you may feel as
if theres only so much for daily living
expenses, so you cant possibly give up
a portion of your income for savings. Its
not an uncommon concern.
In his book Secrets of the Millionaire
Mind, author and motivational speaker
T. Harv Eker writes, Many people dont
like to manage their money because,
first, they say it restricts their freedom,
and second, they say they dont have
enough money.
Even so, he says, make it a point to
set aside a percentage that you can
handle, no matter how small. He says,
Remember, we are creatures of habit,
and therefore the habit of managing
your money is more important than
the amount.
Start by setting aside 10%. As your
income grows, so can the amount you
deposit into the account. Your treasury
will thrive as you get used to the habit.

5 PLAN YOuR EXPENSES

Weve all tried our best to spend more
wisely, but failed at some point. Money
plays a large part in our daily business,
after all. We need it to go places, eat,
clothe ourselves, and the list goes on.
But remember there are two types
of expenses: needs and wants. If you
retrace your purchases in the past year,
you may be surprised to find out just
how much you spent on snacks, daily

coffee runs, or impulsive shopping trips.

In his book MONEY: Master the
Game. 7 Simple Steps to Financial
Freedom, personal finance instructor
and bestselling author Tony Robbins
points out that the little things you
spend on can make a difference long
termthey add up to surprisingly giant
numbers.
While you can try to muster all
the willpower to overcome your
unnecessary wants, you could just factor
them into your budget. As Robbins
suggests, call it the spending plan.
He writes, I like the idea of planning
how to spend my money so that it gives
me the most joy and happiness but
also ensures my financial freedom long
term. Again, perspective is everything.
Randell Tiongson, a registered
financial planner with over 25 years
experience in the financial services
industry, shares this standpoint. It is
impractical to totally rid out all those
wants from your budget as we know
we cant follow it, he writes in his
book Money Manifesto: Lessons in
Personal Finance. By including the
wants in ones budget, albeit in a more
programmed fashion, we can have our
cake and eat it too.
You can indulge your cravings
without getting derailed from your
financial goals simply by having a
planhave a fun budget and spend
it on whatever you want, but make
sure you dont go beyond the amount
youve allocated for the month.

6 START AN
EMERGENCY FuNd
When your finances are starting to take
better shape, its time to establish an
emergency fund to keep you covered

in case of big, unexpected life events.

In his second book, The Total
Money Makeover, Ramsey
recommends building your emergency
fund to cover three to six months
worth of expenses.
The goal is to be able to have enough
resources to get you through emergency
situations, such as losing a job or facing
an urgent medical situation, without
incurring more debt from credit cards
or breaking your budget.
Be sure to deposit it in a liquid
placement, like a savings account, so
its easily accessible when needed.

calls this the Financial Freedom bank

account.
He writes, The job of this account
is to build a golden goose that lays
golden eggs called passive income. And
when do you get to spend this money?
Never! It is never spentonly invested.
Eventually, when you retire, you get to
spend the income from the funds (the
eggs), but never the principal itself.
In this way, it always keeps growing
and you can never go broke. You
wont have to worry about your living
resources even long after youve kissed
monthly paychecks goodbye.

7 START BuILdING
YOuR RETIREMENT FuNd

8 EXPLORE YOuR
OPTIONS FOR INvESTMENT

Start setting aside money for your

golden years, separate from your savings
account and ideally in something that
isnt very liquid, so youre not tempted to
dip into the funds.
Take your age, target year, and
length of retirement into consideration,
compute how much youll need to live
comfortably after employment, and
work towards that. Its never too early to
start preparing for it.
Over time, you can make this
retirement money work for you. In
Secrets of the Millionaire Mind, Eker

The prospect Eker describes is

promising, and the good news is, its
just one of a host of money-growing
opportunities available outside your
main source of income. Dont stop at
saving and planning your expenses.
As the experts say, make your money
work for you.
Investment is regarded as a
valuable step to cultivating your
finances and achieving your goals,
whether its through business
ventures, the stock market, or real
estate, just to name a few. No financial
experts work is complete without a
discussion about it.
All investments are worthwhile
provided they are aligned with your
investment goals and risk preference,
says Cruz, who is also a personal
finance coach and investment adviser.
Like his colleagues in the industry,
the financial planner encourages his
clients to give it a go, but is quick

Perspective is everything.
Adopting a different
mindset can inspire better
money habits.

to point out that this requires some

studying. As Robbins cautions in
MONEY: Master the Game, Dont get
in the game unless you know the rules.
Think about your objective,
timetable, and how much you are
willing to allot for the investment. Its
crucial to determine these factors
and learn about the investment
opportunities available so you can
determine which is best for you.
Keep in mind that all investments
entail certain risks, but carry potential
returns that can be a great help to your
long-term plans.

9 GET EduCATEd
Look into the technologies and
instruments available to help you
manage your money.
Kiyosaki writes, The reason there
is so much confusion around the term

Ramsey shares this sentiment. In

his book The Total Money Makeover,
he identifies ignorance, or the lack of
know-how, as the number one hurdle
to achieving financial health. He states,
If you made a mess of your money
and/or havent gotten the best use
from it, usually the reason is that you
were never taught to do so.
Indeed, money management is a
life skill which, when learned and
practiced, can open up amazing
opportunities. It may not have been
taught in school, but theres a wealth of
learning resources. Read books, attend
seminars, talk to mentors, bookmark
websites and blogs to keep yourself
abreast of all things money.
Take advantage of these opportunities
to build your money management knowhow and keep your financial health in
top form. Go on a lifetime quest to learn
more about money, Ramsey urges. The
growth of your own funds will show you
the difference that financial education
can make.

Managing personal finances can
sometimes be tedious, and thats why
it can be challenging to stick to your
plans.
Overcome this by constantly
checking in on your progress with your
spouse or partner. Or, if youre not
married, gather a group of friends who
are going on a similar journey so you
can keep each other on track.
The point is: Without some sort of
ongoing structure in place, you will
probably quit, writes Kiyosaki in Its
Rising Time. Imagine the conversation
if its all by yourself: This is too hard.
I dont have time Thats itIm done.
Its easy to justify this to yourself. But
imagine making those same comments
to three good friends who want you
to make it and who are good enough
friends to not let you quit. Thats the
type of support group were talking
about.
The positive reinforcement will keep
you going.

Finances may be a
common cause of

but you can weather
this bump through
communication.

MONEY talks
HONeSt COMMUNICAtION is important for any relationship, and yet
money remains a taboo subject in many households. When Boston-based financial
services company Fidelity Investments surveyed over a thousand couples aged 25
and up, 72% of the couples said that they communicate very well, yet 43% failed
to identify their other halfs income, while 47% disagreed about how much they
will need to save for retirement. Social etiquette may suggest maintaining a level
of discretion when talking to friends about money matters, but financial experts
recommend granting full disclosure when doing so with your spouse or partner.
Constantly engaging each other in discussions about budgeting, saving, and
planning for lifes next big milestones will help strengthen your relationship and
better equip you for the future.

YOURS, MINE, AND OURS

tO MerGe BANK ACCOUNtS or not? That is the question many couples face after
tying the knot. The jury is still out on that one, but results of a survey by TD Bank in
the U.S. might give some helpful insights. The 2014 poll of more than 1,000 couples
found that 42% of those who have joint accounts also keep individual accounts, but
not to keep financial affairs secret from their partners. Only 7% cited privacy as a
reason for doing so; independence was the top consideration, though mostly among
women. Financial experts differ in opinion, but most agree that your best bet is to
weigh your best options with each other and with your bank.

couples who spent

What is the smartest course of action for

your funds after retirement? What type

WorthWhile to invest them in stocks?
Invest a portion of

your savings account
to cover your living
expenses.

my son, Who is in his

tWenties, Works full
time but is planning to
allot a portion of his
income for a side business.
is this advisable?
Its good that your son is thinking of
putting up a side business. However,
he should not forget about saving
some money for financial emergencies.
Apart from setting aside a portion of
his income for the business, he should
also allot a portion that will go towards
his emergency fund, which should
be at least six months worth of his
expenses.
His priority should be learning
the habit of saving, but this doesnt
mean that he should wait until his
emergency fund is complete before
he ventures into business. Depending
on his income and expenses, it is
possible to do both at the same time.

We are exploring
more practical
living spaces. is it better
to sell our current home,
settle the balance, and
buy a smaller property,
or invest in renovations
to turn part of it into a
commercial space?
The sounder option for me is to sell
the home, settle the balance, and
buy a smaller property to move into
because the cash flow here is certain
and involves less risk. Investing in
renovations to create a rental property
may put financial strain on your
budget because it may take time
before you can find a tenant for your
commercial space.

The ideal scenario is that youll have enough money to live until 100
when you retire, which means you can afford to simply put the money
in a savings account. If your retirement fund is insufficient to sustain you
beyond 10 years, then its advisable to invest a portion of it (not all). My
advice is to keep enough money in your savings account that can cover
at least three years of your retirement living expenses. Then invest half
of the rest of your retirement fund in a moderate-risk investment such as
a balanced fund, and the other half in a high-risk investment such as the
stock market or an equity fund.

THE DREAM
With a lot of hard work and persistence,
a once-struggling single mom was able to

Living area
Never in her wildest dreams did Bernadette Concepcion think her
life would take such a drastic turn in the span of a few months. In
December 2008, she was still living with her son and her daughter
in a spare room at her sisters condo unit. In 2009, she opened
Lavish Lashes, an eyelash extension studio, which eventually
took off and which now has 11 branches. After gaining success,
Bernadette was able to buy her own home, and in 2014, built a
weekend home on the outskirts of the city.
Bernadette, an avid fan of local home magazine Real Living (a
sister publication of Good Housekeeeping under Summit Media),
drew the home she had in mind, and sought the help of contractor
Nikki Bustos of Formoso Homes (formohomes@gmail.com) and
architect Renato Carpio (63929-690-7812) to bring it to life. The
homeowner likes putting together items from different stores. For
the living area, she went to Dwell for the sofa and the Barcelona
couch, Triboa Bay Living (triboabayliving.com) for the floor lamp,
and a store in Australia for the checkered cowhide rug. The large
painting above the living area and the totem pole in the corner are
by Claude Tayag, while the framed sketches near the totem pole are
by HR Ocampo.

She estimates that up to 15 people at a time stay over at the weekend
home. Dami! Kasi I have three sisters, tapos a brother, tapos mom and

with family and friends.
She still cant believe that shes got her dream home. Praying hard

I want an

Is there a way to
repair it?

nfortunately, I have not found a solution to this dilemma. I understand that such spots
are caused by moisture, perhaps from cleaning the mirror, that managed to seep into
the back of the mirror. These spots are more often found on vintage or antique mirrors,
so I can only surmise that the manufacturing of mirrors has improved over time.
If the best feature of the antique mirror is the frame, you may try bringing it to a glass
and mirror supplier, and ask if they can replace the mirror itself. Otherwise, you may just
have to learn to love the mirrors weathered look. Marivic Arambulo

How can I avoid getting scratches on my new wood floors?

You can keep your hardwood floors pristine by practicing the no-shoe policy. The heels of
your shoes can scratch the floor, especially stiletto heels. Go barefoot or use soft slippers
when walking around. Other tips to keep in mind: Never drag tables, chairs, or anything
heavy around the floor. Lift furniture when moving them. Additionally, you may also
put felt contacts on the feet of tables and chairs as extra protection. Vacuum or sweep
the floor regularly. The abrasive texture of dirt can scratch and dull the floor. If using a
vacuum, make sure the brush attachment is a floor attachment as it is designed to lift off
dirt from the floor without scratching the surface. And if youre using a broom, choose a
soft-bristle broom. Marivic Arambulo

I think everyone loves

the smell and feel of crisp

linens, the way we feel
when we stay in a hotel
where linens are changed
every day. I feel that it is
also conducive to good
quality sleep.
A good rule of thumb
for me when it comes
to changing bed linens
is twice a month or
every 15th and 30th so I
dont forget. Its not too
frequent nor too seldom.
However, it also
depends on your lifestyle
or personality. If you
sweat heavily, wear
your day clothes in bed,
shower in the morning
instead of the evening,
or if you have dogs,
then you may choose to
change the linens weekly.
Otherwise, twice a
month is sufficient. Toofrequent changes, when
unnecessary, are not only
a waste of time, effort,
and water, but also reduce
the longevity of your bed
linens. Marivic Arambulo

CHAIRS. WHAT ARE GOOD FABRIC OPTIONS,
ESPECIALLY WITH THE COMING HOT WEATHER?
Full leather slip covers are low-maintenance, but might be uncomfortable
to sit on in hot weather. As an alternative, choose fabrics with natural fibers
like cotton and linen. These are breathable and are cooler to use. However,
pure natural fabrics might be too expensive or difficult to find. Opt for fabrics
with a natural and synthetic fiber blend, such as polyester and cotton (which
combine the durability of polyester and the comfort of cotton), spandex
and cotton (which combine the flexibility of spandex and the breathability
of cotton), or cotton, polyester, and rayon (which combine breathability,
durability, and sheen). Ivy Tablante Darilag M.Arch

OUR BIG OLD FURNITURE PIECES SEEM TO LOOK
DISPROPORTIONATE. WHAT DO I DO?
This is one of the dilemmas that both homeowners and interior designers
face with difficulty. Usually, the homeowners tend to retain their existing
pieces because of sentimental value or out of the desire to reuse the same
pieces. Value going home to a breathable and livable space with just the
proper pieces you need, rather than going home to a very cramped space
with all your existing big pieces. What you can do initially is to measure your
new place, and plan what furniture items to incorporate. Next, choose your
non-negotiable items and check if their sizes will fit comfortably in your new
home. Lastly, choose to store, give away, or sell your other existing pieces so
they, too, can have a new home. Anla Li Tan

If your maid comes from the province, it is understandable that
she may not be used to your food choices. You may want to ask
her about her food preferences and what she is used to eating.
She might also have religious restrictions and cannot eat pork or
beef. Once youve determined what her dietary preferences are, I
advise you to buy her food when you do your grocery shopping.
I discourage employers from giving their staff money directly
because they sometimes choose not to spend the money for
themselves, and send the money home to their family instead. As
for the budget, if you provide the rice and cooking condiments, a
food budget of P2,000 to P2,500 a month is reasonable. Again,
this will all depend on what food she prefers. Christine Araneta-Ferreira

Football cannot be an end in

itself, says Miguel Bermundo of
Dream Big Pilipinas. There really
has to be something more than
football, and for us its getting
them to achieve their dreams,
being resilient, and overcoming
whatever environment or current
circumstances theyre in to get
what they want.

GOAL!

Dream Big Pilipinas uses football to help empower

underprivileged kids to strive for better lives.
IN 2009, MIGuEL BErMuNDO and his friends were volunteers for a nonprofit group that
used sports to motivate kids in underprivileged communities in Mandaluyong. The kids eventually
joined a tournament, where they were required to submit personal information.
We gathered the info of the kidstheir names, their ages, says Miguel. But out of curiosity,
we asked them, Ano yung mga pangarap niyo?, and we asked them to write it down. The seven- to
ten-year-olds would say what you would normally expect a child to say when you ask about their
dreams: doctor, scientist, soldier. What we noticed was the much older ones would be consistent in
their complaints about the problems they had at homeSinasaktan ako ni Kuya; Makauwi lang si

Daddy; Hindi masigawan sa bahay. These for

them are already considered dreams.
He continues, What we assessed from this
was, when kids get older, they stop dreaming
when they realize that their dreams are hard or
their dreams are not realistic. And the context
of working hard and committing to something
in life disappears.
And thus, in 2010, Dream Big Pilipinas
Football Association was born. The whole
point of Dream Big Pilipinas is to use sports,
to use guidance and values formation to keep
those dreams alive, and to make kids resilient
in these communities where the situation is
really creating that uphill climb towards most
dreams, explains Miguel.
Dream Big Pilipinas has three programs:

football, academic, scholarship. Values

formation and academic review classes are
all part of the package.
Miguel, a licensed FIFA/AFC (Fdration
Internationale de Football Association/
Asian Football Confederation) coach,
handles the football program, which is made
up of weekly football drills and scrimmages
for conditioning and skills development.
There are currently around 300 kids

parents, we have an agreement with them.
Theyre not supposed to get into child
laborthats a common practice in the
extreme poor communities theyre in.
Another thing is theyre supposed to be in
formal schooling. If they are not, then they
start with us first, but they have to have the
direction to get themselves back into school.
Otherwise they cannot continue in the
program, he stresses.
A select group of the most talented
players competes in big tournaments hosted
by private football clubs or private schools
varsity teams. Of this, Miguel says, Theyre
able to compete at a high level, and theyve
been winningnot all the time, but what
weve learned from that is theyre at par, if
not better [than their peers].
When Dream Big Pilipinas conducted
an impact assessment, the results were
encouraging, adds Miguel: The kids do
claim the values formation, the academic
review program, and the football do
contribute to their total development,
on knowing whats right and wrong, how
to behave properly, how to go after their
dreams. Some, not all, have direct impact
on their grades.
Football has also opened up amazing
opportunities. Just last summer, the
graduating batch competed in one of the
competitive football tournaments against
the likes of Claret, Ateneo, La Salle. They
finished second place, and the result of that
was seven of our players got scouted into
a school, Philippine Womens University.
They now have full scholarships, doing
computer science and also business
management and marketing, he says.
They have other scholars, including
a sixth and a seventh grader, who were
accepted into an international school. The
directors, Miguel admits, were initially

worried about whether the kids would be

accepted socially. But because they were
very skilled in football, he says, they were
welcomed by the student body. They were
adored in the community.
Miguel works full-time at a
telecommunications company, so it requires a
lot of commitment to keep Dream Big Pilipinas
going. But seeing the kids move forward in life
keeps him and the other directors motivated.
Its very heartwarming to know that the
background of these kids is, he reflects,
their parents are mambobote, scavengers,
and these kinds of possibilities wouldnt have
happened without some intervention.
Apart from academic opportunities, the
kids also experience some transformation
socially. In general, Miguel says the kids
would shut down in the presence of
someone who looks or acts differently.
But with the continuous exposure and
occasional victories here and there, they see
this is just a game, people can have fun, no
ones better or worse than the other. So the
social aspect, it really improves, he says.
Whoever they are on the field is a result
of the hard work that theyve committed
to, so thats something we connect to the
other things they do in life, like go after a
scholarship.
You can help the cause with your time,
treasure, or talent. If you want to give your

time to just be with the kids, whether its

through sports, academics, or a special
skill, then thats something we can
schedule. We just have to get an interview
with the volunteer to see how he or she
would like to contribute, says Miguel.
It could be money, and it goes to our
scholarship program. Non-monetary would
be football gear, shoes, jerseys for the
football side, and school materials on the
academic side.
Dream Big Pilipinas also has strategic
partnerships with private groups like Sparta,
an indoor football field. You and your kids
can support their football clinic called
Sparta FC. We have skilled scholars, who
are also varsity players, and me as a coach.
We coach the paying kids who come here,
so Sparta gets the fees, and we get free
usage of the field, explains Miguel. We can
assure you that its a good quality football
engagement for kids, and a fun one.
To donate or to learn more about the program,
visit dreambigpilipinas.com, or Dream Big
Pilipinas on Facebook. Sparta FC happens every
Saturday from 10 a.m. 12 n.n. and Sunday from
2 4 p.m. at Sparta Philippines, 16 Pioneer Street,
Mandaluyong City; (63917) 8537572. Free trials
are available for first-timers.

A HELPING HAND
More than just providing quality education to lowincome communities, Mano Amiga hopes to
transform the lives of families and individuals.
ON HEr SECOND yEAr at the Ateneo
de Manila University, Lynn Pinugu faced a
dilemma. I found out that my mom was going
to lose her job, and I got worried that I wasnt
going to be able to finish school, she reveals.
Luckily, there was an essay competition for
budding journalists in the school. I won it,
and I won a two-year scholarship to be able
to stay in the university.
Since then, Lynn has become passionate
about making education accessible to
everyone. I realized that if you come from

a more or less privileged background, its

something you take for granted. But its not
something thats available to all, she says.
After graduating, Lynn worked in public
relations before going to Mexico as a
missionary in 2006. There, she came across a
school called Mano Amiga, which the principal
described as a very good school for children
who cant necessarily afford a good education.
Lynn was blown away by the concept and
the students. During her conversation with the
principal, Lynn joked, If you ever decide to

bring this to the Philippines, give me a call.

In 2007, Lynn was back in Manila, again
working in PR, when Mano Amiga reached
her, saying it was interested in exploring
putting up a school in the Philippines.
Without any background in education, or
in nonprofit, I decided to give it a try, says
Lynn. She was 23 years old.
I did a lot of research, I talked to educators,
I hired a principal, and with her, we started to
try to see the curriculum that we could offer,
the teachers we can hire, recalls Lynn. Mano
Amigas sister school, Everest Academy in
Taguig, also provided guidance when it came to

developing the school model.

Lynn made use of stories of transformation,
compiling them in a PowerPoint presentation,
to raise funds for the school. In Mexico, Mano
Amiga students have national scores at par
with the best schools in the country. I just kept
telling people, Hey, I need you to take a leap
of faith in this idea, and believe these are the
same stories that can happen here, she says.
Mano Amiga opened its doors at Rotaryville
Homes, FTI, Taguig, on September 22, 2008.
The school offered kindergarten education to
the children of informal settlers in the area.
Today, Mano Amiga offers quality education

for kids up to sixth grade, and will continue

to expand to 12th grade as the pioneering
class progresses.
The education doesnt come for freein
order for them to value the program, families
are asked to pay a monthly tuition fee of
P100 to P500.
While they still have donors, Mano Amiga
has found other ways to sustain the school.
We put up a cafeteria business in 2012, after
we realized that we cant rely on donations
alone, says Lynn. Bistro 3846 operates the
cafeterias at Everest Academy and Keys
International School in Mandaluyong, and its
profits go to the scholarships of Mano Amiga
children. The business also employs the
scholars mothers. Our idea was, if we provide
them with regular employment, then you also
increase their capacity to pay, explains Lynn.
This is one of Mano Amigas strengths:
going beyond education and looking at the
personal situations of the kids to have a better
understanding of the support they need to
complete their education.
When you put up a school in a poor
community, you think youre only there to
offer them education, says Lynn. If you just
focus on education, youre not going to create
much transformation. You have to really
understand the personal circumstance of the
kids and the family. And thats what we do, we
do home visits.
Mano Amiga makes learning fun and
engaging, so kids excitedly show up at school.
The Grade 3 students class starts at 12:30.
Theyre here by 11! exclaims Lynn. From 19
students, Mano Amiga now has 97 students,
doing shifts in the limited classrooms.
We really need a campus that can
accommodate, maybe, about 800 scholars,
says Lynn. To this end, Mano Amiga is
currently raising funds to build a bigger and
better campus at Levitown Avenue, Better
Living, Paraaque. The 2,300-sq.m school
is set to open in August 2016. Weve just
been approaching individuals, different
corporations. We have a donee certificate,
meaning whoever donates to us, its 100
percent tax deductible. The idea is that we try
to get people who also believe in the cause as
much as we do, and so far, when people visit
the school, they spend time with the children,
they realize that its a good project that could
really transform the lives of these families.

Four women share their stories of finding love
the second time around.

A NEw LEAsE oN LovE

Faith Fernandez-Mondejar, 46, and Brylle F. Mondejar, 46, went to
the same high school but went their separate ways after graduation.
They crossed paths again 25 years after graduating from high
school, and after their earlier marriages had been annulled.

FAITH: I goT MARRIeD A Few yeARS after graduating from college. My

husband and I were blessed with two children, who are now 18 and 7. But differences
in priorities, beliefs, and principles led to the breakdown of the marriage. The
marriage was annulled in early 2013.
Brylle got married in the late 90s, and the union lasted for about three years.
Their marriage got annulled as well.
Twenty-five years after graduating from high school, our paths crossed again when
we volunteered to be part of the organizing committee of our batch, which was tasked
to host the schools alumni homecoming event. It was just an opportunity to give back,
to reconnect with old friends. A few days after the event, Brylle reached out to me to

reclaim a minus-one CD that he had

left during the homecoming program.
As a way of saying thank you for going
out of my way to return the CD, he
asked if could treat me to coffee at
Starbucks afterwards.
For the first time ever, we really got
to talk to each other. That Starbucks
non-date led to another non-date,
plus group dates with our high school
friends. It was months later when we
finally caught up with the truth that
what we had was something special.
We were having a late-night
conversation over the phone when
Brylle suddenly said that he wanted
to take me somewhere special. I was
expecting that hed mention some
romantic new restaurant, but he said
he wanted to take me to Tagaytay,
and find a nice park where my two
kids could roam around and have fun.
I was speechless for a few seconds.
I knew then that this man would be
special, this man who embraced my
kids as part of me, and was envisioning
himself spending time with not just me,
but with us as a family.
We got married in civil rites on April
8, 2015. There was neither fear nor
reservation about giving love and life
another go. Our first marriages did not
scar us for life. From the rubbles of our
broken marriages, we gained valuable
insights, learnings, and opportunities
to become better, fearless, stronger,
more loving, more forgiving people.
A marriage that didnt work does
not define who you are and the kind of
person you can still become. Accept
that it didnt work, see what lessons
you can draw from it, be open and be
humble to see where you went wrong.
Learn from them, release all bitterness,
forgive your former partner, and most
importantly, forgive yourself. Then just
move forward, no looking backunless
you just want to flip your hair!

After a failed marriage, Arlene Lagman, 35, was introduced
to a friend of a friend working abroad. Arlenes chat
sessions with Mark Nucum, 35, eventually blossomed into a
long-distance romance. They are now together in Dubai.

ARLeNe: I goT MARRIeD IN 2001 when I was just 21. Maybe

because I was young and idealistic, I wanted him to be my first and last.
It was a whirlwind romance, and wed only been together a year before
we got married. On our first year of marriage, he still frequently went
out with friends, did not have a stable job, and I discovered he was using
prohibited drugs. I decided to leave him in 2003.
After almost a year of being separated, we gave it another try. I
thought we could make it work this time, but he went back to his old

88

ways. He was a drunkard, a womanizer, a drug addict,

and a big liar. I stayed because I was waiting for him
to realize that our relationship should be his priority.
I stayed because I wanted to be the person to help
him change for the better. But I waited to no avail.
In 2009, I decided to leave him for good. I
feared for my life because drugs had turned him
into a different person already. Our marriage was
eventually annulled because we did not have a valid
marriage license.
I took the time after the separation to learn to do
things on my own. I went to the movies alone, dined
alone, traveled alone, and was just independent. I finally
decided to learn how to drive. It felt so rewarding and
fulfilling, knowing I did it all on my own.
After my husband and I had been separated
for almost a year, my friends decided to play
matchmaker. They pushed me to date, and I gladly
played along. One officemate volunteered to
introduce me to Mark, a friend in Dubai who wanted
to have someone to chat with. In November 2010, we
got introduced through Facebook. At first, I thought it
would just break the monotony of work or home. We
went on to chat and Skype for almost a year. Most of
the time, we would just talk about anythingfrom the
toughest topics like our failed relationships and his
challenges of being a single dad, to the tiniest things,
like what hell prepare for dinner.
I realized that I could be myself again when I was
talking to Mark. I didnt have to pretend or think
about what I needed to say or do. I never doubted
anything about him, even if we hadnt seen each other
in person. Everything just seemed to flow naturally
between us. When we did not talk to each other for
more than a week after almost a year of constant
communication, I realized that he needed to be part
of my every single dayregardless of the physical
distance between us.
Distance made this second love a little difficult, but
weve overcome the loneliness that comes along with
it. We are now together in Dubai. At first, I thought
about the what ifs that were part of the baggage
from the previous marriage. But then I realized that
you shouldnt over-think things. Believe that this is
something different, something that you deserve, and
make it just that.
After a failed relationship, you can be bitter for
a while, but life doesnt end there. That love ended
because it needed to end. This is the universe telling
you that you deserve something great! Dont close
that door.

After years apart, grade-school classmates Rachel
Limjoco-Bonifacio, 34, and Anton Bonifacio, 33,
got married on November 27, 2015, less than eight
months after reconnecting.

RAcHeL: I HAD A DAugHTeR wITH A MAN with whom

I had a four-year relationship, but we decided to part ways
because we werent ready to raise a child together, financially
and emotionally. He now has a family of his own.
I then had a seven-year relationship with a very good
friend. We started on the same page, but as time went by,
we discovered that we were very different as individuals. I
already gave up about two years, before we officially called it
off. During that time, I was in acceptance mode, that maybe
this is lifebland, boring, and designed to make you feel like a
zombie. I told myself I would probably never get married (he
never proposed anyway), and that marriage would just make
me feel even more trapped.
I resorted to yoga and meditation to keep my depression at
bay. I thought at first the endorphins would at least make me

see my bland life through rose-tinted glasses. But what I

wasnt ready for was the clarity it brought methat, yes, life
is beautiful, that we just have to put ourselves first and open
up to all the possibilities the world can give.
When we ended the relationship, I was ready to be alone.
I accepted the fact that my life was in perfect balance
without him, and that being with my daughter and having
my mom beside me was enough. I was happy again. I didnt
need anyone, it was okay to be alone. I was already planning
my life with that in mind, and surprisingly, the thought of
being alone after my daughter graduates from college was
something I was looking forward to.
And then Anton happened. He was my grade-school
classmate, my best friend, my crush. As kids, we never talked
about our crushes on each other, but if you ask anyone from
grade school, its always been Anton and Rachel. We would
talk for hours on the phone until even after we moved to
different high schools. It eventually faded because of the
distance. I later learned that he had a kid, and I thought, Oh
well. Game over. Moving on. We managed to keep in touch
through the years, saw each other in a couple of reunions,
exchanged a few hi-hello text messages.
After my failed relationship with my daughters father and
while obsessing over Anton secretly, I told myself that if he
would make the move, Id go for it. But he never did make
the first move.
Early in 2015, I received a text message from him, asking
if I was at work. I was at the building lobby and literally
stopped in my tracks, my heart in my throat. We decided
to meet at the coffee shop of a hotel nearby. When I looked
up at the glass doors of the hotel lobby, there he was, with
his Grade 4 smile, in his dark suit, looking like a young,
successful executive. I wasnt prepared for one particular,
surprising feelingof a bride walking up to her groom. I
quickly brushed the thought away.
We hugged, sat down, and had a quick chat before I left
in a daze. I knew I was in trouble.
That same night, we had dinner. He took me to meet
his mom again, and her first question was, Are you still a
Limjoco? I also met his son, who greeted me with a kiss
and a hug. Then we spent a couple of hours on his balcony,
where he laid down all his cards. He said he was okay being
alone and, in fact, configured his life that way. But after
seeing me that morning, he realized that the reason it never
worked out with anyone else was because it was still me. It
has always been me. And that if Im willing to give it a shot,
hes willing to give his 100 percent.
There was panic and confusion from my end. After a
week of phone calls, messages, and a couple of dinner dates,
I decided to take a few steps back and told him I wasnt
ready for this, that he needed to reassess the situation
maybe he was just caught up in the excitement of seeing
me again. He respectfully gave me the space I needed. I felt
relieved at first, but started to miss him. I sought wisdom
from family and friends. Almost everyone said go for it, but
always with a word of caution. If it worked out, great! If it
didnt, at least we could say we tried. I eventually reached
out to him and invited him to dinner.
It was one of the best decisions I have made in my life.
We decided to give it a chance. It didnt start out smoothly.

We had to learn each others quirks. Since both of us were single parents, I had to
learn his disciplining methods, he had to learn mine. What amazed me was we would
naturally complement each other in most things.
I fell in love with how he sincerely cares for me and the kids. Id never been with
anyone who made me feel like we were one unit. A family. And he did it without any
hesitation. He treated me exactly how I thought a woman should be treated and more,
and treated my daughter as if she were his own.
Love is always worth a shot. But dont expect it to complete you. Dont expect it to
fill the voids in your life. Dont expect it to become your new identity. If you do, you
attract the same people who are incomplete, and the cycle of feeding on each others
life force never ends. Spend time realizing that you already are complete. You have
everything you need. You are alivebe open to all the possibilities that life may throw
your way. And then when love happens, embrace it fully.

We kept being friends. He eventually

We eventually found each other again,

It went on this way until he tried

he really couldnt do it. He stopped, and
just went on living. Then my relationship
didnt work out. Eric and I were both
free, but then I was in the Philippines, he

In 2009, he invited me to visit New

after 15 years. We were already in our

I had to head back to the Philippines.
We still kept in touch, but somehow we
both knew that there was something else

who were then 19 and 15. They gave their

said they were going to be fine, and that
they would be happy when I was. Eric

ALLERGY-PROOF YOUR KID

Scientists are making major headway in the race to prevent allergies. Below, three ways

Living with a cat or dog during

their first year of life cuts
babies risk of developing a pet
allergy almost in half, according
to a study in Clinical &
Experimental Allergy. Year one
is the magic window (exposure
after 12 months didnt have the
same impact), and the benefits
were cat- and dog-specific.
(Alas, the effect of living with
smaller animals like hamsters
and bunnies was not studied.)

A new study released last year

found that babies who had
been breast-fed for four to six
months were less likely than
formula-fed babies to develop
allergies to cats and dogs by
age four. Breast milk carries
antibodies and good bacteria
that are vital to developing a
babys immune system,
explains study author Christine
Cole Johnson Ph.D. Breastfeeding could potentially help
prevent other allergies, too;
more research needs to be
done, says Dr. Johnson.

Aim for two grams (about a

spoonful of peanut butter)
three times a week,
beginning when your child
starts on solids. For a 2015
British study, some infants
were fed peanut protein
regularly, while others stayed
away from it entirely. After
five years, 1.9 percent of the
peanut eaters were allergic
compared to 13.7 percent of
the abstainers. (If your baby
has another food allergy or

THE FIX: When your partner is
speaking, really listen rather
than silently rehearsing your
own argument in your head.
When hes done, itll be easier
to actually respond.
BAD HABIT: Yelling until you
hear Fine, youre right.
THE FIX: Make a pact with your
partner to avoid the words right,
wrong, win and lose. Keeping
score will drive you apart.
BAD HABIT: Fighting until 1

unsatisfying solution.
THE FIX: Make a peace offering.
Say, Im still angry, but I dont
want to hurt you. Lets talk

BAD HABIT: Hiding out when
youve had it.
THE FIX: Withdrawing conveys
that youre willing to abandon the

ONLINE DATING? Ew. That was my

it would make me seem desperate, and I
certainly was not. In fact, I was the total

But in the last 15 years, I have had a

were half my age. So when in 2012, one

of my friends decided to sponsor my
registration on one dating website, I
thought, Why not?
Five months later, Keith arrived at
NAIA Terminal 1. Through our e-mails,
phone conversations, and Skype talks
combined with positive feedback from
friends in Indiana, where he was fromI
grew confident that he fit the three
Gs: godly, golden (in terms of age), and
guwapo. So when he asked if he could
come to the Philippines to get to know
me and my world even better, I felt
confident enough to agree to it.
I was late picking him up at the airport,
so he had to wait 30 minutes in a crowd
of Filipinos coming home for the holidays.
As I inched my way to the arrival area,

fireworks suddenly appeared in the sky.

My friend Kristia, who was with me,
blurted out, Fireworks, Ate! Its a sign.
Youre meant to be. Yihee! But did I
believe it? Nah. Nevertheless, it certainly
added to the thrill of the moment.
Slowly and very intentionally, we got to
know each other over a period of several
months. I traveled to his part of the world
and he traveled once more to mine. Keith
and I were both over 40 and we were not
about to make a drastic decision, like get
married, without making sure it was Gods
will. So we studied two books by Gary
ThomasSacred Search: What If Its Not
About Who You Marry, But Why? and
Sacred Marriage: What If God Designed
Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than
to Make Us Happy?and found that our
answers to the discussion questions at the
end of each chapter really matched well.
So when he proposed marriage in August
of 2013, I said yes with tears in my eyes,
just amazed at how the Lord brought me
all the way to that point.
We were married in January of 2014
with a ton of people in attendance. It
was also my way of saying goodbye to
my very challenging yet rewarding life
as a missionary for the Campus Crusade
for Christ, where I served for 26 years.
Although the move to Bloomington,
Indiana, was a big step for me, it was
made very easy by the quality of my
irogs character and the warmth of the
local church community that we have
become a part of.
Its amazing how I have come so far,
literally and emotionallyfirst averse to
Internet dating to being on a dating site,
from being a very content single woman to
a very happily married one, from Asia to
America, from missionary to homemaker.
But I do feel like I am applying what Ive
taught in my talks before, now loving and
living this life that God has given to the max.

Germaine SantosCochran is a happy

homemaker and
volunteer for several
mission organizations in
Bloomington, Indiana.
She is pleasantly
surprised to find herself
happily married to her
irog, Keith Cochran, a
music librarian at the
University of Indiana.

the Philippines. The jingles choice of
islands is, however, more for rhythm than
geography, as it makes with no mention
of Tawi-Tawi that frames our south or of
Batanes that peppers our north.
As a travel destination, Batanes
especially to the urban-centricis
either an afterthought or an aspiration.
Its a place you see only in travel shows
or on in-flight magazines, a spectacular
island with terrain reminiscent of
Scotland or New Zealand.
Parang wala ka sa Pilipinas, as
some put it bluntly. But because of its
remotenessit does sit closer to
Taiwan than it does to Manilaits been
branded as a destination you only
consider after youve exhausted the
more family-friendly Boracay and
Bohol, or that you set aside until you
can afford a small fortune generally
reserved for another honeymoon.
To describe Batanes as unlike
anything else in the Philippines is not
meant as a put-down of the rest of the
countrygeography and history have
simply dictated that Batanes be
incredibly unique.
The island people call themselves the
Ivatans, a group with such a rooted
sense of self-identity and community
that tourists can catch locals talking
about themselves and their culture
with, kaming mga Ivatans as opposed

to, tayong mga Pilipino.

Their almond-shaped eyes and
jet-black hair, suggestive of the
Taiwanese immigrants who settled in
the islands before the Spanish even
arrived, are one of the first things that
strike you about them; the next, how
genteel and impossibly polite they are.
Its true that the crime rate in Batanes
is close to nil. Because the Ivatans are
peaceful by nature, yes, but also because
its a little hard to nick someones cattle
or bicycle when, with a declared
population of 17,000 across three main
islands (Batan, Itbayat, Sabtang), you all
practically know each other.
The cuisine in the islands is seafoodand root crop-rich, a natural result of
being bound by the ocean and sea and
of growing convenient crops less
susceptible to weather changes.
Ivatans are, however, quick to point
out that their islands arent always
victims of rain. Downpours do happen,
much like on the rest of the Philippines,
its just that Batanes gets called out
often because it serves as an entry or
exit point for a typhoon coming in or
going out of the country.
Even so, locals have long learned
how to adjust to ever-changing
weather, developing the innate ability
to predict rain from the color of the sky
or the height of waves. Traditional
homes are made from sturdy limestone

and coral, and fortified further with

cogon grass, so typhoon casualties
are never the norm.
But what still makes Batanes truly
disarming and distinctive is its
landscapeeverywhere you look, there
is a gorgeous triumvirate of earth, sea,
and sky. Thankfully, in recent years, the
enigmatic islands have made
themselves more accessible to the rest
of the countryand the worldwith
the introduction of commercial flights.
Ready? Paradise waits.

HOW TO
GET THERE

Plan your trip to Batanes around

January to early June, when weather
is cool and mostly clear. Skyjet Airlines
has flights from Manila to Basco, the
capital of Batanes, four times a week,
and PAL Express recently launched a
daily service. Expect the flight to be
your most expensive expensethey
usually start at P9,000 and can go up
to P12,000 or more. Flights are
typically scheduled to leave Manila
and Basco in the morning, so a
four-day trip is the suggested
minimum. This way, you get
three full days to explore Batanes.

Family-Friendly Tip: A trip to Batanes

means unwinding both your body and
mind. Cellular data is rare to nonexistent and WiFi is unreliable. But if
your digitally savvy child cant be
weaned off a gadget, make sure all
games or apps are available for offline
use before arriving in Basco. Or simply
use the opportunity to take them
outdoors, and rent bikes.

Family-Friendly Tip: Dont plan a trip

Batanes experienced a tourism boom

in 2013 when PAL Express launched

keeping pace with the fast-growing
tourism industry, but some things
require patience, like the wait time for
food in restaurants. It isnt unusual to
wait 30 to 45 minutes for meals to

season, when tourists are packing the
