How do I build my own

cricket farm?

Two 7-gallon plastic bins with lids

(around $5 - $8; available at Fred
Meyer)
Dry cat food (crush it) (around $4
- $6; available at Fred Meyer)
Hiding places (egg carton or
toilet tubes)
Wet paper towels
Sand or soil
2 shallow bowls
Duct tape (around $4 - $6)
At least 150 crickets (cost depends
on amount of crickets)
Heating lamp (around $15)
Clamp light 0 be sure to get
correct amount of wattage
(around $15)
Aluminum screen
1. Gather all of your materials. You
may also need some tools such as
scissors or hammers.
2. Cut a large hole in both lids (this
is easy to do using strong scissors in
combination with a drill). Taping
the screen on both sides of the lid
makes it more secure, and using the
lid makes the habitat easy to access.
Add the cat food in a bowl along
with wet towels.
3. Use the other bowl and fill it
about full with soil. Place it into

the habitat along with some hiding

spots.
4. Transfer the crickets into their new
habitat. Using a toilet tube to scoop
the crickets up makes it easier to
transfer them. Remove ALL other
critters (they may eat your cricket/
cricket eggs)
5. Put the lid on the habitat and use a
long strip of duct tape to make one
side of the lid act as a hinge. Using
two pieces of smaller duct tape on the
opposite side will also help the lid
stay in place.
6. Use heat lamp and clamp light so
the cricket habitat stays between 80
and 90 degrees F. You will probably
notice that the crickets will start to be
more active as the habitat warms up.

Care
Check on the crickets daily to make
sure that there is enough food and.
When you start notice little white
eggs in the sand, move it to the other
bin and replace it with new sand.
Make sure that you add food, water,
and hiding places to the new bin so
that when the baby crickets hatch,
they will have everything they need.

Eating crickets instead of meat

prevents bone production. Bones
take a long time to compost. This
pamphlet will help you stop
thinking of crickets as yucky and
will help you get used to eating
them. Some pros and cons of
eating crickets are listed as well.

Wait - I shouldn't
put meat or bones
into my compost?
Meat and bones are unhealthy to handlers
of compost and bones decompose slowly.
Meat spoils quickly and smells bad. Meat
and bones also attract scavengers. This is
why they are prohibited in some
municipal composting faculties.
One solution would be to eat less meat,
provided we can find other protein
sources. Additional benefits of this
solution are that it also reduces AFO
(Animal Feeding Operations), animal
excrement (which pollutes rivers), and
methane (a greenhouse gas).

Insects, you say?

Desensitizing
Yourself To Crickets
In this pamphlet, we are are focusing on
desensitizing people to crickets, because
this is the main blocker to getting
Westerners to eat crickets.
1. Get used to the taste of the
crickets. Do this by disguising the
crickets in a food. This is easily done
by baking cookies using cricket flour.
2. Get used to the crunchiness of
crickets without actually eating
crickets. Do this by eating a crunchy
food while watching someone eat
crickets. A food that you could use
for this step would be potato chips.
3. Get more familiar with the
crunchiness of crickets. Do this by
eating crickets (take legs off, they
taste better) while watching
someone eat a crunchy food (like
potato chips). The best recipe for this
step would be fried crickets.
4. Get used to the sight of crickets.
Do this by eating a food where the
crickets arent hidden, and make
sure that you are looking at the food
while you are eating it (have legs on
the crickets, just not the back legs).
A good food for this step is cricket
fried rice.
After completing these steps, you
should be able to easily eat crickets.
