Presidents letter

Dear Reader,

Dear Reader,

For those of you who havent heard about

LegacyPR, this is our report of all of our
hard work over the Fall 2014 semester.
The students of Legacy worked with
different organizations doing
various professional public relations
work this semester.

Its that time of year again where we

introduce a new President and group of
LegacyPR students. As the new President
Patricia Zubrod,
of LegacyPR, I see great changes and
President, 2014-15
improvements for both the group and
students involved. This fall we have recruited
new transfer students as well as some incoming freshman PR
majors. It is great to see new faces and students getting involved
in their first couple years at UNI.

Annie Lambert,
Editor, 2014-15

Usually our newsletter contains interviews and insights

into our students and what they want to do with PR. This
semester, we are doing something different. We came up with
articles that would give our reader a look at the benefits and
opportunities that come with being a LegacyPR student. We
have numerous leadership opportunities as well as networking
and professional field experiences.
Something I find beneficial in Legacy is the leadership
opportunities. Its a great way to be involved here at UNI while
making friends and building your resume. Being involved in a
student organization is important when applying for jobs and
internships; however, holding a leadership position in that
organization can really set you apart from the other candidates.
Being a leader can show potential employers that you can take
initiative and take on responsibilities. Networking is another
benefit to being a member of LegacyPR.
We work with real organizations doing real Public Relations
work that other students can only experience at an intership.
This gives us an advantage for when we are applying for
internships and jobs because of the connections we make
through working with professionals. We will come out of the
semester with examples of what we have learned and how weve
grown as Public Relations students.
I encourage all Communication students at UNI to come
check out LegacyPR. It is a great opportunity to better your
PR experience and build your resume.
Expand your PR opportunities with LegacyPR!

Beginning the fall semester LegacyPR started with Cedar

Valley Friends of the Family as well as Hartman Reserve. These
clients helped our student groups experience work in the
digital side of PR as well as some traditional mediums as well.
Our first client, Cedar Valley Friends of the Family, asked for
help as they dive into Giving Tuesday this year. The students
created promotional material including flyers, table tents
and business cards for this event. Students working with this
group also offered their help to contact businesses for support
on this day.
The next client was Hartman Reserve Nature Center who
is working on a capital campaign to build an addition to
their current facilities. As a group, students learned about
the facilities and helped create a video of why people enjoy
Hartman and what educational programs they have to offer.
As we worked our way through the semester we worked on
some pieces for ourselves. Once thinking more about this,
it has been decided to focus solely on LegacyPR as a client
next semester. As recruitment and client work has been lower
this year, we hope to create a well-known brand in the Cedar
Valley and at UNI. My goals for the rest of this semester and
next is to go from just a student organization to more of an
agency atmosphere. I want students and clients to get the best
experience possible from working with LegacyPR. The more
experience the students gain, the better futures they have.
Thank you to all of the students, especially the executive
board members, who have stuck with it throughout the years
for all your hard work. It was a slow semester but can only go
up from here.

The making of a promotional

video for Hartman Preserve
The Hartman Reserve Nature Center is
a public wildlife site, located in Cedar
Falls, Iowa. Today, Hartman is home to
a variety of wildlife, and offers hiking
trails, educational programs for adults
and children, wildlife exhibits, and much
more. Our group was chosen to work
with Hartman on a promotional video,
which would allow Hartman to attract
more of the general public to their cause.
Creating a promotional video
in collaboration with Hartman
was a learning experience, as
capturing wildlife photos and
editing content was crucial to
the project.
The Hartman Reserve Nature
Center began in 1938 as a
camping site, which contained
56 acres of land. This land
was purchased by the YMCA
and John C. Hartman. The
Hartman campsite was
purchased by the Black Hawk

County Conservation Board in 1976,

and began its life as an environmental
education center, as stated by Hartmans
website. The Hartman Reserve is officially
recognized as an Important Bird Area,
and an Iowa Watchable Wildlife Site.
Given the task of creating a promotional
video for the Hartman Reserve, it was
critical to capture the true essence of

Hartman. Thus, there was a strong need

to take many photos, and to record a
necessary amount of video. The photos and
videos emphasized the natural landscape
found at Hartman. The footage includes
sprawling trees, paved and unpaved trails,
signs of wildlife, and other indications
of a genuine wildlife surrounding. Our
footage was also gathered in the fall, so
the bare trees and colorful leaves greatly
contributed to capturing the
essence of nature.
Being assigned to create a
promotional video for the
Hartman Reserve Nature
Center was a difficult, yet
rewarding task. Given the lack
of experience in capturing
and editing footage was a
true challenge. Yet, helping to
generate exposure for a great
cause that is aimed to serve the
public is a much greater reward.

LegacyPR: The ultimate addition to your rsum

LegacyPR is much more than just an extracurricular or just
another student organization on campus. Our organization offers
great opportunities and helps the students who are involved
in many ways. It is a solid organization that helps enhance its
members communication, writing, audio/
video, and public relations skills.
LegacyPR allows you to work with real
clients in the Cedar Valley and assist them
in a variety of ways. Depending on the
organization the student is put with they
could be creating a website, assisting with
fundraising, writing press releases, helping
with branding, or something totally different!
All of these things help them create new skills
or strengthen their existing skills. Future
employers will love the hands on experience
and think it is great that applicant went out
of their way to do more than just classes.

The group also helps its members to work with their creativity
and innovativeness. Many clients want new ideas or ways they can
improve what they are already doing. Being able to hone in on
their creativity, students will be more marketable to employers and
will also have new skills that will add to their
already outstanding ones.
Overall, LegacyPR will assist its members
in many ways and goes beyond what other
student organizations are doing. It will give the
students hands on experience working directly
in their field of study, which will assist their
resume and help them out in future places
of employment. All around, membership
offers the extra edge students need: to be
competitive, have strong skills, and be a noble
applicant regardless of the job.

LegacyPR: Clients
LegacyPR offers many opportunities for public relations majors
and minors, or other related fields. The organization offers its
members opportunities to work with real clients in real-world
situations.
Club leadership and advisors work together to find potential
clients over the summer. After a company indicates they are
willing to work
with LegacyPR, our
president and advisor
sets a meeting to
consult on the
companys needs and
expected outcomes. If
it is determined we can
help, a plan is created
and work begins.
The best types of
projects are those that
that include a full range

of services including: market research, market strategy, public

relations and events, fundraising, and campaign development.
LegacyPR members then divide into groups that focus on working
on the various aspects of the project. Account coordinators are
the main contact with the client, responsible for communicating
client needs to ensure we achieve the agreed-upon campaign
objectives.
This experience provides
LegacyPR members with
the type of experience
students need to build
strong rsums that can
lead to employment
soon after graduation.

Cedar Valley Friends of the Family

History of the non-profit

Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil;

cling to what is good.(Romans 12:9)
Violence, Sexual assault, and homelessness
are three things that show we must cling
to what is good. Cedar Valley Friends of
the Family, nonprofit, believes that we can
work on ending these things by helping
those in need grow and have a sense of
belonging and love. Created in a church
in 1992 with the focus of ending violence
and homelessness, they soon grew to
employing three full-time workers crisis
line workers who helped to find shelter
for families in the Waverly area. By 2000,
they opened Friends House, which could
house eight people in need, and began
creating educational programs addressing
domestic violence. In 2002, they founded
their website, www.cvfriendsofthefamily.
org, which allows people all over to access
information and resources they have and

gives people an easy way to donate to the

organization. Now, they are able to provide
help to homeless families, victims of abuse,
and violence prevention programs all over
the Cedar Valley area.
Cedar Valley Friends of the Family has created a couple programs to help people get
back on their feet. This includes helping
them find good and affordable housing,
assistance in health and child care as well as
employment. These programs are used to
help people get back to being able to do it
on their own.
The organization has created many
different programs to prevent violence and
sexual assault in the community. These
programs include: Coaching Boys into
Men, Stewards of Children, Darkness to
Light, Take Charge of Your Body, Love is
Not Abuse, Bully Prevention, Bystander
Intervention. Love is Not Abuse is for

high school students and counselors to

have proper tools and advise of what to
do if in or witnessing an unhealthy dating
relationship.
Through these programs they have been
able to make a big impact on the Cedar
Valley area. In 2014 alone, Cedar Valley
Friends of the Family helped more than
5,600 people have something positive and
good to cling to.

The gift of giving: How Cedar Valley Friends of the

Familys Giving Tuesday benefited LegacyPR members

Giving Tuesday provided LegacyPR members an opportunity
to establish connections in the community by working alongside
Cedar Valley Friends of the Family and local businesses. This
event strengthened our professional
communication and teamwork skills,
providing real-world public relations
experience through the development
promotional support materials. The
lasting connections we created between
Cedar Valley Friends of the Family, the
UNI Campus Activity Board, and local
businesses.
In addition to the networking and event
coordination experience, we enhanced
our digital communication skills such as
composing formal Email messages and
leveraging Google Drives document-

sharing capabilities. Google Drive is an important resource

when many people are working on a single project from various
locations. In addition, we strengthened our teamwork skills
by collaborating on the promotional
materials as well as recruiting local
businesses to support the Giving
Tuesday event.
Perhaps most important, LegacyPR
members were immersed in a project
that extended beyond a typical classroom
experience. Through this effort, we gained
a better understanding of, and greater
appreciation for, our chosen field of
study. We will always look fondly on our
first-ever public relations experience, the
Giving Tuesday campaign.

Giving Tuesday goes hand in hand

with Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
According to their website, Giving Tuesday is a
day when people around the world come together
to give back.
Most Americans are familiar with Black Friday or Cyber Monday,
where people go to stores early in the morning to start Christmas
shopping or sit at home and do Christmas shopping online, but
do we take time to think about those less fortunate than ourselves
or those who may need a little extra help?

Registered charities 501(c)3, for-profit businesses, schools,

and religious or community groups can become partners to
benefit a charity. Individuals interested in being a Social Media
Ambassador can also get involved with the Giving Tuesday
initiative. Registrations for each of these opportunities can be
found on the Giving Tuesday website.
For more information on Giving Tuesday, visit their website
at www.givingtuesday.org. The website provides a variety of
tool kits as well as links to sign up to become a Partner or Social
Media Ambassador.

Giving can be done in a variety of ways. Individuals can choose

to give their time, money, or in-kind donations. While it
is always important to give back to your community or to
charities of your choice, Giving Tuesday is working to bring
special attention to giving these donations the Tuesday after
Thanksgiving.
For organizations wishing to make their donors and community
members aware of Giving Tuesday and what it is, the Giving
Tuesday website provides toolkits and other information for
organizations to use. Toolkits are made specifically for partners
(includes social media guide, sample email, and sample press
release), individuals and professionals wanting to use pro bono
work, anyone wanting to participate through social medias, and
for donors (includes a list of advisors and partners that will help
you find a charity to donate to for Giving Tuesday).
