George Washingtons Rules of Civility
George Washington was not born good only practice and habit made him so. For instance,
he was known to have a bad temper. In large measure Washington began the process of controlling his temper and other passions by copying at a very early age, a translated version of
a French book of etiquette, dating back to sixteenth century. This book contained 110 rules
of civility. By regularly reminding himself of these of these rules and practicing them when
the opportunity presented itself Washington learned to master his worst inclinations. Below
is an excerpt of some of the rules I believe the general spirit of rules still applies.
1. Every action in company ought to be with some sign of respect to those present.
2. In the presence of others sing not to yourself with a humming voice, nor drum with your
fingers or feet.
3. Speak not when others speak, sit not when others stand, and not when others stop.
4. Turn not your back to others, especially in speaking; jog not the table or desk on which
others read or write; lean not on anyone.
5. Be no flatterer, neither play with anyone that delights not to be played with.
6. Read no books, letters, or papers in company; but when there is a necessity of doing it,
you must ask leave. Come not near the books or writing of anyone, so as to read them unasked; also look not nigh when another is writing a letter.
7. Let your Constance be pleasant but in serious matters somewhat grave.
8. Show not yourself glad at the misfortune of another, though he were your enemy.
9. Let your discourse with men of business be short and comprehensive.
10. In visiting the sick do not presently play the physician if you be not knowing therein.

MEASURE OF FAITH
Without exception the scriptures tells us that God has given each man and
women a measure of faith. Rom 12:33 For I say, through the grace that was
given me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly
than he ought to think; but so to think as to think soberly, according as God hath
dealt to each man a measure of faith.
Today in these times we are called to strengthen each other to a cause which
rises from the very soil we stand on. The roots of our faith can be found in the
lives of our fathers and their fathers who shared and imbedded their faith and
soul to each of us. They were faithful and we are called to be faithful also.
The day after the New Year celebration I was very pleased and surprised to see
that there were not any extra chairs at the camp meeting that Saturday evening.
Some of the people actually sat in the main dining room and watched through
the glass in the doors to the meeting area, other stood leaned against the walls.
I for one raise my hands in faith for all of you who continue to turn your foot
from your own pleasure to share and encourage each in our Southern Heritage.
It is said that General Jackson stool and raised his hands in faith to God thankful
for the just cause of which he was able to be a part. My we also do our part faithfully for our God is faithful, for it is He who stands and raises His hands over us
in victory. 1 Cor 15:57 but thanks be to God, who giveth us the victory through
our Lord Jesus Christ. 58 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that
your labor is not vain in the Lord. KJV
May God bless and strengthen each of you as you walk in faith. Hope to see
each of you at the next meeting.
