Character Name: Michael Cole Age: 17 Gender: Male Features: Black hair, Brown eyes, 60, darkskin
Representation: Jaydon is an individual who is outspoken and
upfront, however he is very easy going. He is also very social within the school environment. His personality is perfect for the role of Michael Cole as Michael is a very confrontational character. This allowed Jaydon to be on set and portray the character of Michael Cole without feeling uncomfortable. I aim to illustrate a clear representation of Michaels identity through the use of different microelements. For example, diegetic sound in the form of spoken dialogue will be a prime factor of my representation. When conversing with Jardel he will be saying such phrases and words as Bruv. and What you saying? which will allow the audience to form a clear perception of Michael. Mise-en-scene in the form of costume will also be used to reinforce the stereotypes of black males. This will be shown through Michael wearing a hat and dark clothing as these things are commonly associated with such things as crime and gang affiliation. The location in which Michael is in will also be important, in the film he will be around an estate as this will be where he lives, the location reinforces the stereotype that black males reside in low economic environments. When showing Michael I will include some low angled shots to show the dominance of Michael in the friendship. Michael will be representing the stereotype of black males, reflecting the research I have done regarding the reforms of the stereotype of black males. Film Influences: Whilst researching different films focusing on black male representation, I came across Menace II Society. This is because, whilst analysing the film, I realised that they use a diverse representation of black males. The motives of the different males involved vary, for example O-Dog is a very confrontational character, acting before he thinks, he commits crimes without feeling any remorse. In fact, he boasts about them and shows other people footage of a murder he committed. This character inspired the character of Michael, as he embodies a variety of the stereotypes put onto black males. Therefore I took the personality and characteristics of O-Dog and applied it to the character of Michael Cole.
Character Influences: I decided to create my characters
representation , focusing on Menace II Society. In this film O-Dog is represented as a clear stereotype as he conforms to the stereotypes surrounding black males associating them with crime, violence and drugs. Therefore I thought I would take the same approach and apply it to the character of Michael Cole.
