According to a recent study conducted by Harvard University and Mars Chocolates, the
theoretical probability of picking a specific color in a 1.59 ounce bag of M & Ms is:
13% brown
13% red
14% yellow
24% blue
29% orange
16% green
1) Count the total number of M & Ms in your bag.
Total: _______

2) Calculate the probability of picking a red or yellow M & M from your bag?

3) Convert your answer in Question #2 to a percent.

4) Explain the similarities and/or differences of your results versus the theoretical
probability of picking a red or yellow M & M.

Bibliography of free or Inexpensive Manipulatives
I am currently teaching a Seventh Grade math course. I purchase the following
inexpensive manipulatives and used them for my class:
M @ Ms
I purchased M @ Ms at Target for a lesson that I was doing on experimental
probability. Targets prices are significantly cheaper than supermarkets and other
major retailers. I had the students count the total number of M & Ms in the bag
and then calculate the probability of picking a color. Their results were then
compared to theoretical quotas issued by the candy manufacturer.
Spinners
I visited Barclay School Supplies at 166 Livingston Street in Brooklyn, NY. They
are located in downtown Brooklyn close to Metro Tech center. I purchased 10
spinners and donated them to my cooperating teacher. Spinners are useful for
calculating experimental probability and are very cheap to purchase. A packet of
10 spinners cost less than ten dollars. I also saw a wide variety of Math posters
suitable for hanging.
Colored Pencils
I purchased twenty five colored number two pencils form Target. The total cost
was only $1.00. This can be useful for students when they are doing two or three
step equations. Students can circle the numbers in one color, box the variables in
another color, and have other colored pencils to assist in their calculations.
Although colored pencils can be purchased anywhere, the prices at Target are
cheaper than any other store I have seen.
Construction Paper
Different color construction paper can be very useful when teaching Geometry.
Students can use colored construction paper to make geometric figures and then

calculate the area, perimeter, circumference or volume of the figure. Once again,
I recommend Target. I purchased a 300 sheet binder of colored construction
paper for $1.00.
Online Resources:
My cooperating teacher has often recommended www.ixl.com and
www.khanacademy.com to her students. Khan Academy offers good review
videos that are grade appropriate. IXL has good practice review problems and
interactive activities and can be very useful to students when they are preparing
for state and common core exams.
