What is Wolf-Hirschhorn
Syndrome?
Wolf Hirschhorn syndrome is an
extremely rare chromosomal disorder that
is caused by a deleted portion of
chromosome 4.
Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome is a
condition that affects many parts of the
body. The major features of this disorder
include a characteristic facial appearance,
delayed growth and development,
intellectual disability, and seizures.
Symptoms
The features of a patient with Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome may include the following
extremely wide-set eyes
a broad or beaked nose
a small head
low-set malformed ears
unusual bump on the forehead above the nose
low birth weight
growth retardation and deficiency
delayed bone age
undescended testicles
Cause
Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome is caused by an extremely rare chromosomal
disorder that deletes a portion of chromosome 4 creating Wolf-Hirschhorn
Syndrome. This disorder can also be caused if one of the parents of the
offspring has a balanced translocation, so yes it is a mutation.
Inherited
No, Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome is not sex linked but is created by a
chromosomal disorder located on chromosome 4 where the disorder is caused
when a short portion of it is deleted. This Genetic Disorder is a homozygous
recessive
Diagnosis
Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome may be determined before birth via
ultrasound
If a case is suspected, using conventional genetic techniques on cells they
will detect the disorder in about 60-70% of cases.
There is another way of diagnosis which is a more sophisticated technique
called FISH that can be used on prenatal or postnatal cells with a 95% chance
of a correct finding.
Genetic counseling is a benefit for the families with children that have
Wolf Hirschhorn Syndrome
Probability
While Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome doesnt have a set in the stone number
of affected people, it does have the probability of getting it. The probability of
getting this genetic disorder is 1 in 50,000 births and is more common in
females at a ratio of 2:1.
