RESIDENT PROFILE

Barb and John Kelly

Barb and John Kelly
moved here from
the Portland Oregon
metro area. They
met in college when
Barb beat John in a
ping pong game, so
he asked her out.
Johns career was in education as a high school teacher,
football and track coach first in Idaho and then in
Tillamook Oregon. In the early 1980s John was selected as a Fulbright exchange teacher and taught for a year
in the United Kingdom. Afterward they moved to the
Portland metro area where John served as vice principal
and then principal. Barb worked as an office manager
at a law firm. They have two married daughters, one in
Seattle and one in Los Angeles.
After John retired he served for five years as interim
assistant superintendent and then consulted for a year.
During that time Barb and John vacationed several years
in the Palm Springs area where they fell in love with
desert living. So when John finally quit the interim job
they looked at several places in the southwest and eventually selected Sun City Festival. They feel that they got
more home here for the money, and loved the fitness

center and golf course. Plus they liked being near a city,
but not in a city. Most mornings youll find them either
in the gym or the pool to start the day and then having
coffee with their buddies.
John plays golf two or three times a week with the
Mens Golf Group, competes in Masters swim meets
with the Festival Swim Club, and enjoys shooting hoops
occasionally at the outdoor court. Barb is very active in
the Quilt Club.
Some random, interesting factoids:
While teaching and coaching, John worked several years
as a Deputy Sheriff patrolling parks along the Oregon
coast during the summer, spring break, and on occasional weekends. This left him with lots of entertaining
stories and some carry over skills for when he became
a vice principal (emphasis on the vice here). He can
still do a passable field sobriety test.
While John was a Fulbright exchange teacher in the
United Kingdom, they were invited for tea at Kensington Palace in London where John was presented to her
Royal Highness, Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother.
They still have the invitation and photo.

Music Lovers Now Have More Listening Options with Contour Enhancements
Contour Upgrade Includes Guide Enhancements and
Interactive Services Featuring New Music Choice Plus
and Pandora
Cox Communications announced an upgrade of Contour
with new personalized music options. With the new feature Music Choice Plus, customers On DEMAND library
will increase to more than 3,000 free music videos.
Customers will have access to the traditional Music
Choice TV channel, Music Choice On DEMAND, as
well as a new Music Choice interactive application.
Customers are also able to enjoy a personalized music
experience with Pandora. Customers can connect to
Pandora online from the Contour interactive service
menu for new or existing Pandora accounts.
Music Choice Plus: With the upgrade, Contour
customers will be able to search for a specific song,
keyword, genre or artist and enjoy related videos on a
non-stop playback for up to 14 videos. Customers can
access music videos through the On DEMAND menu
or the interactive application. The interactive application
can be launched from the Music Choice audio
TV channels.

Pandora: Customers will launch Pandora from the

Contour guides Interactive Services menu to link to
their existing Pandora account or create a new one.
Up to 8 users can link to an account to enjoy their
favorite music or comedy tracks. Users familiar with the
customization of stations and track management will
see their changes implemented in Contour reflected in
Pandora on other devices for a seamless experience.
Contour provides a video experience that is uniquely
relevant to individual consumers, personally shaped
to their interests and preferences. In addition to the
new music options, customers will notice an enhanced
on-screen guide. When customers move from different
menu options, the transitions have been optimized.
Contour service is available as an upgrade over and
above the bulk level of service. For details, contact

Festival Car Club 5th Annual Poker Run

The Festival Car Club invites all SCF residents with golf
carts, motorcycles, street legal ATVs and bicycles to
compete in the 5th Annual Poker Run to be held on
Sunday, March 13 at 2pm. (March 20 rain date)

Too Much
PRESSURE!

Normal blood pressure is 120/80. High blood pressure is 140/90. What

does all that mean? What is blood pressure, anyway?
Blood pressure measures the force of blood pushing outward on the walls
of the arteries. Remember, arteries carry blood away from the heart. This
force is created by the heart pushing blood through the body. The numbers
in a blood pressure reading indicate the amount of force on arterial walls
during heart contraction (systole) and heart relaxation (diastole). The higher
(first) number represents systolic blood pressure and the lower (second)
represents diastolic blood pressure.
Healthy arteries naturally expand and contract to help regulate blood pressure and accommodate increased or decreased blood flow during increased
or decreased activity, stress and other times when blood flow changes.
When arteries become less flexible with disease or aging, blood pressure
can increase. High blood pressure, a reading of 140/90 or greater, creates
a number health risks.
High blood pressure can, over time, lead to heart disease and/or heart
failure. The heart becomes overworked when blood must be forced through
stiff, narrowed arteries. In addition, stiff arteries are at greater risk for rupture leading to hemorrhagic stroke or aneurysm. Both of these can be fatal
or severely debilitating. Risk factors for high blood pressure (hypertension)
include family history, obesity, lack of exercise, poor diet and tobacco/alcohol abuse.
The good news is high blood pressure is preventable and/or controllable.
Other than prescription medications, blood pressure can be controlled in
multiple ways.

Get regular aerobic exercise

Maintain healthy body weight
Keep a diet low in sodium and rich in potassium
Avoid tobacco use
Limit alcohol consumption
Manage stress

Blood pressure should be checked regularly. Consult a physician if readings

are consistently (2 or more consecutive) elevated. High blood pressure is a
controllable risk factor for heart disease. Being diligent about maintaining a
healthy blood pressure of 120/80, or lower, is critical for maintaining good
health.
