5. Installation
4. Preparation
The unit is supplied with an Installation checklist, which should be followed during installation.

To initiate for mal warranty, each step of the installation should be checked off on the checklist on

completion.

Th e DSAS unit is shipped in a po wered down state , To prepare the unit for operation ,
undertake th e fo llowing (this ca n be do ne during installation if re quired ) :

For reference the unit footprint dimensions including Base metal casing are shown in Figure 9. In the

event of this unit replacing a DSAS Mk1 unit in existing position ALL METALWORK including BASE,

MUST be changed. The FIXING FOOTPRINT however remains the SAME .

1. R em ove the meta l c as ing and plastic lid of th e DS AS unit.

2. Locate th e inte rna l 4A in put fu se hold ers fo r FUSE1 and FUSE2 (next to

P OW CI

pack input block J 1, refer to Figure 11), and en sure the fu se holde rs are e mpt y

To install the

Unit:

1. Select a suitable unit installation location, taking into consideration the following:

3 , Repla ce plastic lid a nd metal top plate, en suring the cut-out in th e metal top
plate is located abo ve the sa tellite transcei ver (the tran sceiver is at oppo site
e nd to th e ext e rnal po w er input plug) .

a.
b.

4 . Th e un it mu st be co nnected to a 24 V DC po wer s upp ly (ideally thi s should be

backed-up supply such as the GM DS S po we r source ) a nd requires a c able
loop fo r the a le rt activati on points. Both extern al DC po wer and al ert cabling
require two co re cable w ith circular cr os s section of between 8 & 11.9 mm
outsi de diameter (0 0) (fig ure of 8 cable is NOT suitable ), A su ita ble c able
wo uld be a so ft tin ann ealed copper (ASTM B- 33) flexible stranded cable , 00
10mm , in a heavy duty flam e proof arc tic grade neoprene. If a 24 V DC
is no t ea sil y availa ble then a Regulated D C Ou tput Power Su pply, 24 V at 2
Am p s w ill be required .

<J

The transceiver requires a clear and unobst ructed view of the sky in order to
communicate With the Inmarsat and GPS satellite conste llations.
Obstr uctions within the look angie range (see Figure 3) are unavoidable in most
marine installations, but the important thing is to minimise them. As a rule of
thumb, it is useful to apply the rule: Safe distance 29 x diame ter of obstruction.
e.g. for a pole of 0.1 metres diameter, the safe distance is 29 x 0.1 = 2.9 metres.
This rule ensures that the obstruction covers no greater than 2 degrees arc.
The unit must be a minimum of 2 metres from any other communication system
and further if possible.
The unit should NOT be in the line of sight of any high-powered transmission
equipment such as radar.
The system should not be installed in any areas that are designated as
I
'hazardous zones'.

fed th rough the second cable gland and attached to th e charge r boa rd as show n
in Figure 5.

Please note:
When the vessel is i n port there is an increased probability of communication problems as
there is likely to be a high concentration of interference sources from both land and vessel
based communications equipment. High power VHF, UHF and microwave equipment can all
cause interference problems. Buildings, gantries and other large structures can also cause
problems in port by blocking the line of sight to the satellite.

Note: The alert activation points should be wired in series using normally closed
momentary action switches (terminals 1 & 3 in the sup plie d alert activati on points)
- refe r to Figure 1.

5. Co nnec t fuse FUSE1 , as shown in Fig ure 11. The charger boa rd LED 1 (status) shoul d
follow a start up sequ ence as per sectio n 10 (Charger Board LED Diagno stics). The
tran sceiver LE D w ill flas h 5 times and then turn off .

6. System Operation
T he OSAS unit operates autom atically and requires no user interv enti on in norma l ope ration.

6. Co nnect fus e FUSE2 as show n in Figure 11.

The unit will autom atica lly switch over to its intern al power supp ly in the eve nt of input power failur e.
The unit shou ld the n ope rate independently for approxima tely 5-7 days. When the exte rna l supply IS
reconn ect ed the powe r pack will rech arge .

Note: The unit m ay be damaged if the fuses are connected in the wrong order.

7. Repl ace the plastic lid of the unit and screw it dow n we ll to ensu re a watertight seal ,
be ing careful not to ov er tighten . Then bolt on the top of the metal cas ing, ensuring that
the cut-out porti on is above the satellite transceiver as shown in Figure 4 .

Wh en pressed , eac h alert activation point trigger s the DSA S to se nd 1 alert position report
immediately, then one eve ry 30 min utes until it is rese t from the shore-side.

Note : The unit will not function if the cut-out portion of the metal casing is not over
the satellite transceiver.

7. Maintenance
The intern al pow er pack has an ex pec ted life of 2 yea rs but this may vary depe nding upon operating
conditions. It is tested automatica lly eve ry 30 days and the results are se nt to the sho re-sid e syste m.
Inform atio n on the current sta te of the powe r pack will be made ava ilab le to the registered ow ne r of
the unit to allow appro priate sched uling of replacements. Full instructions for replacement of the power

RECOMMENDATION ON PERFORMANCE STANDARDS

FOR A SHIP SECURITY ALERT SYSTEM

1.1 The ship security alert system is provided to

a ship for the purpose of transmitting a security
alert to the shore to indicate to a compete nt
authority that the sec urity of the ship is under
threat or has bee n comp romis ed. It comprises a
minimum of two activation points, one of which
is on the navigation bridge . These initiate the
transmission of a ship security alert. The system
is intended to allow a cov ert activation to be
made which alerts the com petent authority
asho re and does not raise an alarm on board
ship nor alert other ships.

COM PLIANT - the system transm its a sec urity

alert to the shore indicating to a competent
author ity that the security of the ship is under
threat. It comprises two activation points that
Initiate the transm ission of the alert, one of which
is on the navigation bridge. Activatio n is covert,
so alerting the com petent authority ashore
w ithout raising an alarm on board ship or alerting
othe r ships

1.2 As requ ired by its Administration, the

competent authority receiving the alert notifies
the authority responsib le for maritime security
Within Its Adm inistration, the coas tal State(s) In
whose vicinity the ship is pres ently operating, or
other Contracting Govern ments.

COMPLIAN T - note: the Vesse l name, date /

time, lat / Ion, plus other relevant parameters are
transmitted in the Exception Position Report to
the PurpleFinder server (the shore station) and
immediately routed via email to the nominated
competent autho nty and flagstate recip ients.
Refer to Section 2.1.3 of the DSAS Ship Security
Alert System User Guide and Ship Security
Plan Interface docume nt, ref: PS-BD- DSAS
UGSSPI 2.0

1.3 The procedures for the use of the ship

sec urity alert system and the location of the
activation points are given in the ship security
plan agreed by the Administration.

COMPLIANT - the docum ent PS-BD-DSAS

UGSSP I_2.0 allows for the definition of these
procedu res.

1.4 The ship security alert system may utilise the

radio installation provided for compliance with
chapter IV of the SOl AS Convention, other radio
systems provided for gene ral commu nication s or
dedicated radio system s.

COMPLIANT - note: the system utilises a

dedicated Inmarsat IDP service (non-G MDSS) .
