3. Unit Description
The DSAS ship sec urity alert sys tem is self-con tained requiring only mounting, connection to
pow er, and wiring of two alert ac tivation points . The unit cons ists of a satellite tran sc eiv er, 18Ah
VRS LA power pack , and a multi staqe charg er unit. Th e unit requ ires an exte rn al DC su pply
to mai ntain the pow er pack charge . On disconnectio n of exte rna l powe r, the unit w ill oper ate
for app rox ima te ly 5-7 days. Op eration of the unit IS completely auto matic , and the only user
intervention that shou ld be requ ired after installation is to restore the externa l power sup ply in the
event of disconn ection . Figure 1 below shows a sch ematic diagram of the un it.
Note : the unit must NOT be painted as this may inhibit transmission / reception of satellite signals .

5. Installation
4. Preparation
The unit is supplied with an Installation checklist, which should be followed during installation.
To initiate for mal warranty, each step of the installation should be checked off on the checklist on
completion.
Th e DSAS unit is shipped in a po wered down state , To prepare the unit for operation ,
undertake th e fo llowing (this ca n be do ne during installation if re quired ) :
For reference the unit footprint dimensions including Base metal casing are shown in Figure 9. In the
event of this unit replacing a DSAS Mk1 unit in existing position ALL METALWORK including BASE,

To install the
Unit:
1. Select a suitable unit installation location, taking into consideration the following:
3 , Repla ce plastic lid a nd metal top plate, en suring the cut-out in th e metal top
plate is located abo ve the sa tellite transcei ver (the tran sceiver is at oppo site
e nd to th e ext e rnal po w er input plug) .

The transceiver requires a clear and unobst ructed view of the sky in order to
communicate With the Inmarsat and GPS satellite conste llations.
Obstr uctions within the look angie range (see Figure 3) are unavoidable in most
marine installations, but the important thing is to minimise them. As a rule of
thumb, it is useful to apply the rule: Safe distance 29 x diame ter of obstruction.
e.g. for a pole of 0.1 metres diameter, the safe distance is 29 x 0.1 = 2.9 metres.
This rule ensures that the obstruction covers no greater than 2 degrees arc.
The unit must be a minimum of 2 metres from any other communication system
and further if possible.
The unit should NOT be in the line of sight of any high-powered transmission
equipment such as radar.
The system should not be installed in any areas that are designated as
I
'hazardous zones'.

fed th rough the second cable gland and attached to th e charge r boa rd as show n
in Figure 5.
Please note:
When the vessel is i n port there is an increased probability of communication problems as
there is likely to be a high concentration of interference sources from both land and vessel
based communications equipment. High power VHF, UHF and microwave equipment can all
cause interference problems. Buildings, gantries and other large structures can also cause
problems in port by blocking the line of sight to the satellite.
Note: The alert activation points should be wired in series using normally closed
momentary action switches (terminals 1 & 3 in the sup plie d alert activati on points)
- refe r to Figure 1.
5. Co nnec t fuse FUSE1 , as shown in Fig ure 11. The charger boa rd LED 1 (status) shoul d
follow a start up sequ ence as per sectio n 10 (Charger Board LED Diagno stics). The
tran sceiver LE D w ill flas h 5 times and then turn off .
6. System Operation
T he OSAS unit operates autom atically and requires no user interv enti on in norma l ope ration.
Note: The unit m ay be damaged if the fuses are connected in the wrong order.
7. Repl ace the plastic lid of the unit and screw it dow n we ll to ensu re a watertight seal ,
be ing careful not to ov er tighten . Then bolt on the top of the metal cas ing, ensuring that
the cut-out porti on is above the satellite transceiver as shown in Figure 4 .
Wh en pressed , eac h alert activation point trigger s the DSA S to se nd 1 alert position report
immediately, then one eve ry 30 min utes until it is rese t from the shore-side.
Note : The unit will not function if the cut-out portion of the metal casing is not over
the satellite transceiver.
7. Maintenance
The intern al pow er pack has an ex pec ted life of 2 yea rs but this may vary depe nding upon operating
conditions. It is tested automatica lly eve ry 30 days and the results are se nt to the sho re-sid e syste m.
Inform atio n on the current sta te of the powe r pack will be made ava ilab le to the registered ow ne r of
the unit to allow appro priate sched uling of replacements. Full instructions for replacement of the power
