Understanding Television News

Task: (LO1:1.1)

Local television news programme- local news is a channel that

covers your local sports, crime and justice, weather, business,
economy, events, education and politics. An example of my local
news station would be UTV.

Regional television news program- regional news is news that is

broadcasted to the whole of the UK, and broadcasts stories that will
affect the whole of the UK such as politics and economy; but also
broadcasts other events. An example of regional TV new is the BBC.

Nationalist television news program- nationalist news is a news

station that broadcasts worldwide events and stories that show
other parts of the world what is happening elsewhere but also lets
the world what is happening in economy, politics and wars. Example
of national news is ABC news.
UTV
UTV is a local television news program that covers urban and rural
news events surrounding Northern Ireland. Such stories as local
politics, business, events, education, justice, crime and weather. The
set of the UTV live news program is very professional. With its red
and white glass finish and logo, it stands at a high level of
smoothness so that the audience will believe the news that the
presenters are telling them.

UTV has a wide range of sponsors and advertising that help fund the
local news station. These sponsors involve Flybe, business eye, Visit
Belfast, Tesco, Electric Ireland, Charles Hurst and many more.
The target audinence of this show is people of the local area from
buisnesses to farmers but also polticians and people interested in
polistics.
As this show is a local television program the budget for the
graphics is not at an international scale. For the local media the
graphics involve the UTV logo, event logos and advertising graphics
for local businesses. When people are being interviewed, there is a
small band presented in the left hand corner, telling the audience
who the person is and what their profession/ how they are involved
in the news story.

UTV use multiple techniques to deliver their news, such as different

forms of camera shots. The camera shots that they use inolve
panning, close ups, medium shots etc. but also local cut away shots
that involve the area where the news story is based. There are
usually two presneters, one male and one female dressed
professionally as they deliver the stories of the day. The
cinematogeahy and cameras used by UTV are not at high standard
such as the BBC or SKY Sports but still convey the message of what
the audience are being told and see on screen.
With this type of style the audience can connect with the news
stories that they are being told as UTV focus on rural and urban
styles to where the event has taken place.
Even though UTV wouldnt be classified as an international TV news
station, they still push the program forward in social media such as
Twitter and Facebook to bring up their digitial marketing and
broadcasting forward to the local community.
BBC
The BBC is a professional regional TV news program that broadcasts
to the UK and Ireland. They cover multiple news items involving,
important world events, politics, economy, business, education, life
events, entertainment, justice, crime and the weather. With this
wide range of news stories that may or may not affect the general
public, it gives the BBC a higher audienc rate.
The set design of the BBC is exceptionally sharp with red and white
finish, along with a backdrop of London. Along with profrssional style
of the BBC, this gives its audience a sense that the news evenets
that are being broadcasted are studied and told at high standard.
Unlike the news told at UTV, the level quality that is broadcasted
through the BBC, is at a considerable scale to which its audiences
can relate to the quality of the news and events broadcasted.

The BBC has a different form of sponsorship than Sky Sports and
UTV. The BBC get their funding from the annual television liscence
fee. This means that the BBC are controlled by the government in
what they can and cannot broadcast, as they are funded through
the public money.
The BBC have a range of target audiences, from the national
audience, to business owners, people interedted in politics,
economy, world events; but also anyone who watches the news to
find out what is happening in the world/ UK that may or may not
affect them.
The BBC use a variety of graphics throughout their news. As they
are a much bigger news tation their quality of graphics are a lot
more sophisticated compared to UTV. In the opening, there is a
graphic design logo of the world spinning with BBC news on it.
Throughout the show you will see multiple red and white BBC logos;
alongside banners at the bottom of the screen either telling the
audience what the headline is, who it is that is being interviewed,
and the time.

Other techniques that the BBC use to engage their audiences are:

Presenters look professional

Voice overs

BBC also be highly involed with the social media, with the likes of
twitter and facebook, so that their audiences can get involved with
whats happening throughtout the UK or world events and broadcast
it through digital media and marketing.
ABC
ABC news is an international news broadcasting show that
broadcasts to the world. This news program covers multiple topics
such as, world events, celebrity news, politics, crime, justice,
economy, business, education, life events, entertainment, justice,
crime and the weather.
The set design of this show is very professional with its blue and
white tables; alongside with a blue backdrop of countries. In some
shows of ABC news live there is a logo presented on the front of the
table and green screen of the ABC offices behind the presenters.
Unlike UTV and BBC, ABC news have a high standard of quality when
it comes to the set design of the show. This helps the audience
believe in what they are being told throughout the show.

Like UTV, ABC has multiple different sponsors throughout the US;
such as Mark Inc. Allergan Inc. Pfizer, The Scotts Co. LLC, REMAX,
Astrzeneca and many more.
This show has a variety of audiences from international audiences,
to business owners, people interedted in politics, economy, world
events; but also anyone who watches the news to find out what is
happening in the world that may or may not affect them.
The ABC have a variety of graphics throughout their program. There
are two types of openings for this program- the first one is a graphic
design of two paparazzi people flashing and taking pictures of the
ABC logo. The second opening is more traditional standard, with the
world in red with a backdrop of skyscrapers and the ABC flashing up
and presented sharply. Behind the presenter there is a backdrop of
the ABC offices or of countries in all shades of blue. During the show
there is banners at the bottom of the screen with the topic of
information and whoever is being interviewed.
