Chapter 16 Lessons 1-3

People and Empires in


the Americas

The first Americans reached the


American continents about
40,000 to 12,000 years ago.

Lesson 1
North American Societies

The North Americans were progressing


slower than the South American and
the Mesoamerican.

Northwest: Resources came from the


sea and the coastal forests.

Potlatch was a common ceremony.

Southwest: They began to farm and build


pueblos.

The Anasazi built the Pueblo Bonito in A.D. 900s


The beautiful village

Mound Builders created their own unique


traditions in the woodlands east of the
Mississippi River.

Northeastern tribes built alliances such as


the Iroquois for various benefits.

Upper New York

North Americans believed in nature spirits.

Clans shared similar


social patterns.

Lesson 2
Maya Kings and Cities

The homeland of the Maya stretched from


southern Mexico into northern Central America.

Maya civilization existed as separated


city-states, each ruled by a god-king.

Classic Period of Maya Civilization


(A.D. 250-900)

Tikal

Maya city-states were connected


through alliances and trade.

The Maya were


superstitiously
polytheistic
(human sacrifices).

Mayan calendar

The Maya developed the most advanced


writing system in the ancient Americas.

When the Spanish arrived in 16th century,


they brought about deadly diseases and
attempted to convert Mayans into Christians.

The Maya civilization faded, but never


vanished.

Lesson 3
The Aztecs Control Central Mexico

The Valley of Mexico attracted the people of


Teotihuacan and the Toltecs.

In 6th century, Teotihuacan had a population


of between 150,000 and 200,000 people.

Obsidian

After Teotihuacan declined, the Toltecs


dominated the area.

The Aztecs arrived into northern Mexico in


A.D. 1200.

With Tenochtitlan as the capital city, Aztec


became the greatest empire of the
Mesoamerican area.

By the early 1500s, Tenochtitlan had a


population of between 200,000 and
400,000 people.

The Aztecs were


highly religious
and superstitious.

Huitzilopochtli

When Montezuma II came


into rule, the people
rebelled against his harsh
ideals.

In 1521, Tenochtitlan was conquered by the


Spaniards.

Mexico city was built on the ruins.
