Instructional Design Best Practices

Scaffold your course content into
meaningful chunks to guide
information processing.

Assign skills-based assessments so

students can demonstrate their
understanding of the course content.

Use CIRTs Online Learning Laboratory

(OLL) or Video Studio to create
dynamic instructional media.

Use a consistent font type, color

scheme and layout to promote
universal design for learning.

Offer virtual office hours to

accommodate distance learning
students.

Course Development
The Instructional Design Team is composed of
designers and project managers who can guide
the course development process from planning to
delivery. Two common ways in which we work with
faculty during course development include:

CIRTs Online Learning Laboratory in Building 10, Suite 1102

Faculty-Driven
Focused on providing guidance to faculty regarding
best practices for online course delivery.

Program-Based
Focused on working with specific departments and
programs to transition entire degree programs to
be delivered fully online.

programs.
The role of the instructional designer liaison
can include:
Serving as the point of contact for
departments and programs delivering
courses online
Assisting in the production of high-quality
online courses
Coordinating faculty development
efforts related to instructional design and
pedagogy
Assisting with transitioning entire degree

Course Review

CIRTs instructional designers are available to

provide informal, constructive feedback to faculty
interested in reviewing their online course prior to
delivery.
For a more rigorous, standards-based review,
faculty can request a Quality Matters review,
which evaluates the course design using a set
of literature-based standards.
