OVERVIEW
Futures Total Film recorded the highest digital circulation of 12,280, a jump of 51.5 per cent
year on year, in the latest report from the Audit Bureau of Circulations, covering January to June
2013.
Cond Nasts GQ overtook Hearst Magazines UKs Mens Health to reach second place with
12,231, a rise of 26.7 per cent year on year.
Meanwhile, Mens Health posted a one per cent decline in digital circulation, despite maintaining
its place as the biggest-circulating paid-for mens title in print, recording a digital figure of 12,018
per issue.
Hearst's Cosmopolitan, which took the lead in the table in the same period last year with 13,298,
saw its digital edition fall a massive 25.6 per cent to 9,894 for the six months to June 2013.
Laurel Kaye, an investment director at Havas Media, said: "There is a continued domination of
male-skewed publications and that makes sense, because early adopters of tablets tend to be
men."
The masthead here is almost the same colour as empire but they have chosen to put emphasis on the word film instead of total because its obviously the
main topic which immediately draws a film-interested audience. They fit the word total in the font of the F for film which indicates a clever font choice to
allow enough room for the words to correlate with each other. The white background is an interesting decision which is something you dont see often of

film magazines. It allows for the producers to be totally creative with the graphical layout and main image. The only drawback
of this white background is that it means you have to be more creative if you want to layer white text onto the magazine cover. Our biggest preview ever is
similar in that it tries to sell the magazine and is a sell-line. The emphasis in terms of colour is on the biggest because thats the producers claim.
As regards to the main image the font used for 100 actually
matches the font on Megan Foxs clothes which is a clever link to
again establish the anchorage between the main image and the
main tagline. The fonts vary to distinguish different sections of the
magazine cover. Like for instance the pull quote differs entirely
from the quotes used to list the listed tag lines in the left top
corner. Obviously in terms of the male gaze (Laura Mulvey) theyve
chosen to put Megan Fox on the cover in a very minimal outfit. She
is often rated one of the sexiest women in the world and it is no
coincidence that the producers have chosen to feature her on the
cover. As previously mentioned the target audience demographic
for Total Film is predominately again males, like empire. This
kind of trashy objectification of women is something I really dont
want to feature in my magazine cover. However, the main image
actually links with the tagline the deadly Megan Fox and Im
guessing shes in this outfit because of a movie she is starring in
and a character she is playing so it isnt just an attempt to have
Megan Fox in small clothes on the cover. Not only is she
recognised for her beauty though, shes an actress in a lot of films
which means that people who are drawn to a film magazine are
likely to recognise her. Therefore more likely to pick up the
magazine.
