Does color clothing affect mood?

The eye can see 7,000,000 colors. Like death and taxes, there is no escaping
color. Colors can be divided into two categories: warm and cool. Warm colors are
stimulating, energetic and active, but if too intense they can be hot, oppressive, and heavy.
Cool colors are relaxed and passive. Does color clothes affect a person's mood?
Therefore, does the clothes people wear often reflect a lot about peoples
personality? Different clothing colors emanate different feelings and meanings, and colors
can affect and reflect anyones mood, says color consultant (Mary Ellen Lapp, 2009) author
of The Color of Success. Therefore, colors can make your personality stand on depending
what the color is presented. During eye contact on clothes or really anything, light is
carried on wavelengths absorbed by the eyes that the brain converts into colors that the
person sees (Doris Jeanette, Psy.D, 2007). All emotions have wavelengths. People can also
feel and directly experience them. The colors people wear not only affect many people
but also the people around the human. In a previous experiment, new clothes does take
action in the mood and mostly reflects and contains a positive and good gesture of a
person (Abby Hoicowitz,1999). Any type of clothing has its type of reflection to anything.
It can also reflect what the test subject feel in terms of emotions. What other people
clothes reveal about the community, the author explains not only how psychology
determines the communitys clothing choices, but also how to overcome key psychological
issues and wardrobe might be bringing to light in the persons everyday life, or even at

work (Clinical psychologist Dr. Jennifer, 2012). The clothing of people can reveal a lot of
personality about the other person. In fact, research does suggest that color can affect the
other peoples mood from clothes, and that the choice of color or combinations of color
for clothing or environment is significant to the persons mood. Also, the brain is a major
part of this process due to where the emotions are created and transformed.
The brain can associate with colors and contribute it to affects. Vivid color coding
may improve some short-memory in terms of knowledge and may improve functional
ability says (cernin, keller, 2003). ). Color is believed to be the most important visual
concept to memory and also a symbol of nature and fertility, has been shown to increase
reading speed and memory (Kendra, Cherry). It can attract other peoples attention, and
stimulate to the memory to produce emotions to the person (Garreth Myers, n.d). It may
improve short-term memory throughout what the person is looking at mostly because
there are different types of colors that have different type of meaning to one another
(Malays j med, 2012). Different people in this community have different perspectives of
colors, for example, the dark rooms are for people that need to be relaxed or even
stressed out about something. People in different locations increases stimulation, and it
may increase memory due to color space (Garreth

Myers, n.d). After all, certain amount of persons remember colors due to the history the
people have been through, whether if its negative or positive. When entering a classroom
that belongs to kindergarten students, it is common to see bright colors like yellow, red
and blue on the wall (Garreth Myers, n.d). There are some drawbacks and positive effects
of colors considering about the warm and cool concept represents, it can consider a crazy

amount of emotions. Colors play a vital role in the humanity daily lives and it has been
proven that peoples activities and responses are influenced by them (Kenneth, Fehrman,
2013). Wide variety colors diversify each moment of each persons life. Different people
have their strengths and weaknesses with each color, for example, the color yellow can
improve focus. The human brain relates to colors with where they are seen in nature.
Research has proved that many colors affecting the person will affect it in its own way.
(Kendra, cherry, 2004) Color psychology is the study of color as a determinant of human
behavior. The brain has many contributions to this system because emotions come from
the brain and create mood. Finally, the impact throughout the body can effect a persons
mood throughout the process.
The impact of color throughout the body. (Colors may have positive and realistic
affects). A program at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, patients were
given a certain piece of gum with the color pink to make them eat less (Lindsey
Gruson,1982). Visual colors like the color pink on gum made the patients eat less, their
taste of the different type of gum with that certain color made them stimulate emotions
to the brain to cause little appetite. Hindu scientist, formulated the principles behind the
human body's organs having an adverse, stimulated or inhibited response, to the exposure
of certain colors (D.P. Ghadiali,2010). The reason for this was because of the color
spectrum being effective in this process and also the cause of the wavelengths. The
scientist concluded that if a part of the body was not functioning properly, a specific
treatment of color could restore balance colors (D.P. Ghadiali,2010. The healing effects of
each of the seven colors of the spectrum and their attributes, which, in today's society, the
community associates with e.g. red stimulates the blood and blue calms it (Edward

Babbitt, 2010). Edward published a book called "The Principles of Light and Color", which
was used to reveal treatments with color. The impact of color throughout the body can
reveal an extreme amount of emotions from the inside and produce mood, which causes
how people feel about clothing. Some certain colors can affect people wearing specific
clothes.
Why certain colors are used in specific environments or the buildings. Change on
mood may in fact be the result of color in the environment says (Nancy. J,2003). Most
classes and hospitals are painted neutral colors to maintain instead of chaotic (Gregg
Mastorakos, 2008). The reason the majority of hospitals have a certain color is mostly
because of the fact that neutral colors dont make people panic. The colors need to be
neutral because people in hospital should be calm and relaxed. In the 1990s, the Center
for Health Design, a non-profit organization, was committed to advancing design in

healthcare settings to improve patient outcomes (Glidden, 2005). In an experiment, an

excess amount of black can create a major amount of depression. Whilst clothing, rooms,
and buildings have most of that color. Research has shown that warm color clothes will
make people eat more (Celeste Allen,2012). Warm color will make people eat more, for
example the colors red, orange, and yellow. According to warm colors, people with those
colors will most likely have an impact of being overweight or have eating problems. This
was tested in a fast food restaurant. Some fast food restaurants paint their walls in
yellow in order to motivate people to leave as soon as they order their food so that

they free more space for new customers (M.Farouk Radwan,2003) McDonald's, apparently,
use red and yellow because red equals fast and yellow equals hunger. On the other hand, red is
a very eye catching color and this makes it useful in case you want to draw some
attention to your restaurant. Certain colors of clothes are used in specific environments
because each color makes every person feel differently. Colors can be used to influence
our emotions and the feelings of those around. The reaction to color is instantaneous and
subliminal, many colors have their descriptions and terms.
Color and its descriptions in term of emotions and feelings. Research has proven that
yellow is the color for energy and an active to memory/decisiveness (Raetta Parker, 2001).
Yellow is very effective for attracting attention. It can also provide focus. The color blue
is a more common used color around the worlds society. The color can relate to shy,
honor, trust, and productivity (Jacci Howard Bear, 2012). Blue is also said to be the least
appetizing color. A blue plate may cause you to eat less. The color red is a more
emotional color due to how its described, its a sign of love, warning, and life (Cameron
Chapman, 2010). Red is the most emotionally intense color, as it stimulates a faster
heartbeat and breathing. Red converts to clearly to more of a positive color overall. Color
description is a major part of color psychology mostly because it triggers the moods that
are presented. Therefore, bringing clothes with different colors impacts human society.
Color psychology affecting peoples clothing. Research has it that purple clothing
presents romantic purple connotes luxury, wealth, and sophistication. It is also feminine
and romantic, but since the color is rare in nature (not a lot of things in nature are purple)
purple can appear artificial (David Johnson, 2007). Another example of a color in terms of
color psychology can be black. Research shows that black clothing, either male or female,

shows authority and power. It also makes people appear thinner (David Johnson, 2007). A
calmer color blue, fashion consultants recommend wearing blue to job interviews because
it symbolizes loyalty (David Johnson, 2007). It is also a more productive color to be
around, say people wear blue can increase the potential of productivity.
How does color contribute to illness? Red is the color of energy, vitality and power. It
is used for burning out cancer, drying up weeping sores or wounds Red is a powerful
healing agent for healing diseases of the blood and circulation (Dixie Allan, 2006). Orange
is also a color of energy. It is used to increase immunity, to increase sexual potency, to
help in all digestive ailments, chest and kidney diseases (Christine, Miserandino,2008).
Green is a good general healing color because it stimulates growth so it is good for
helping heal broken bones, re-growth of tissue of all kinds. Green is a good color for
pregnant women to help create an atmosphere of serenity and calm (Ian Langtree,2009).
The color pink is most commonly associated with breast cancer awareness, the pink
awareness is also a symbol for birth parents, and childhood cancer awareness (Sammie
robbins,2004). The color brown in terms of illness was mostly presented as colorectal
cancer (danarae,2001). Early humans living between 4,000 BC and 3,000 BC believed that
illness was a punishment from the gods (celeste allem, 2012). The color affecting the
illness can stimulate feelings toward the brain and therefore release emotions. On the
other hand, clothes can encourage different emotions and how the person really dresses in
terms of clothing.
Identity ownership from a fashion marketing perspective. The way some people in the
community may dress can trigger the taste of the persons music, the persons career,
economic status, and the persons place in society (Patricia Mink Rath,2012). Breaking it

down to this leads to how a human sees another person from what the person is
wearing in terms of clothes. The brand of the clothing has the ability to make a
statement about the persons beliefs and economic status. Textile material of the clothing
can affect the mood (Designer Nicola Sparks, 2004). The color of the textile material
releases emotions due to the color perception that it has. As some colors have different
type of meaning from another.
In conclusion, clothes or in others words a persons wardrobe is one of the key
aspects in assessing ones personality. Clothes and mood are two inter-related
components also affecting the overall personality of an individual. Different color
clothing will affect the other persons mood, whether positive or negative.
