Agreatdealofinformationisavailabletohelpteachersimprovetheircontentunderstandingof
civicsandgovernment;locatelessonplans,materialsandactivitiesforclassroomuse;and
provideinformationaboutgroupsandorganizationsinvolvedincitizenshipandlawrelated
educationefforts.Thisguidehasbeendevelopedtohelpclassroomteachersaccessthis
information.

ThenewConnecticutElementaryandSecondarySocialStudiesFrameworksidentifiescivicsas
oneofthefourkeysocialstudiesdisciplines(alongwithhistory,geographyandeconomics)to
beincludedininstructionateverygradelevel.Foreachofthesedisciplines,themesare
identifiedthatcarrythroughtheFrameworksforeachgradelevelK8andforeachhighschool
course.ThecivicsthemesthatareaddressedareCivicandPoliticalInstitutions;Participation
andDeliberation;andProcesses,RulesandLaws.

Eachofthesethemesisaddressedthroughouttheschoolexperiencetobegradeleveland
contenttopicappropriate.Increasinglysophisticatedstudentexpectationsandcompelling
questionsareincludedtoguidetheteacherdevelopmentofinquiryactivities.

Itishopedthatthisresourceguidewillbehelpfultoelementaryandsecondaryteachersin
planningeffectiveinquirylessonstohelptheirstudentsgainabetterunderstandingofanda
genuineinterestincitizenshipandgovernment.
