KEEFERS KORNER
We live by a divine Word. We were created, the entire world and universe was created,
by the mere utterance of Gods Word. Light. And it appeared. By His Word alone came
water and land, day and night, fish, birds, and all kinds of animals. And finally us the
humans. At the conclusion of each of His days of work, he reflected on his creations and
proclaimed them all good. He gave us this wonderful world to enjoy and care for.
Certainly, good for us.
As you know, our little vacation this month took us to the foothills of the Rockies, the front
range as they call it out there. Other than the colds and other maladies, we had a great
time. Fortunately, we had clear skies several days and frequently saw the magnificent
snow-covered peaks of the mountains. Of course, to get there we traveled through
Nebraska and Wyoming, entirely different landscapes than the mountains. Now, many
people enjoy a good laugh when speaking about Nebraskas landscape, but you know
what? It is all good. Different in its magnificence, but good none-the-same. The same
can be said of our beloved Iowa.
Psalm 19 has been a part of our worship this past month. The heavens are telling of the
glory of God, It opens, the firmament proclaims His handiwork. By the very creation
work of God, we are instructed to praise and give witness to the work of God among us.
Like many of you who have traveled, I have had the joy of seeing mountains and plains,
deserts and oceans, even the opportunity to walk on another continent. I have never
been disappointed, or failed to be amazed at the complexity and beauty of our world. I
wonder how some folks can see the same beauty and doubt the existence of God. I pity
those who cannot. Every sunrise or sunset is a testament to His power and radiance.
I hope that in the daily hustle and bustle of our lives, we can take time to pause and
notice Gods handiwork that is all around us. So many things distract us in our daily walk
electronic devices, political ads, and horrid news of more terror and inhuman behavior,
to name a few. Is it possible to slow down and listen to the witness of creation? My day
usually starts early and I have the joy of witnessing many sunrises. Wintertime has more
cloudy days, it seems, than the rest of the year. However, it is because of those dreary
days that the gorgeous, clear morning sunrises seem even more spectacular. When the
weather warms, I will be able to get out on those early mornings and take a brisk (but not
frigid) walk. I am looking forward to those days, but still revel in fascination at the
beautiful snowy landscape. As surely as God created day and night, he created the
seasons. I am glad I live in a part of the world where I can truly enjoy the varieties of
weather in each of those seasons.
Psalm 19 also speaks of Gods law. People often resist having to live by laws, especially
when governments or religious authorities proclaim laws that dont make sense. We are
blessed that in Gods law we find perfection. His laws are perfect and have stood the test
of time. His laws offer wisdom and joy. His laws keep us from foolish transgressions, and
even from ourselves. Psalm 19 warns us about the dangers of turning our backs on
Gods commands.
It is from Psalm 19 that we are reminded of Gods glory and Gods laws and precepts.
He has done all this for our joy and protection. His commands help us to live good and
ordered lives. If you read Psalm 19, you find at the end, the very words of prayer I begin
each of the messages God has me share with you, May the words of my mouth and the
meditations of [our] hearts be acceptable in Your sight, O Lord, my rock and my
redeemer.
I pray that as we continue into this year, suffering the slings and arrows of an election
year, each of us can take more time to truly give thanks for all that has been given to us
by a most merciful, forgiving , and loving God. May we be Gods reflective light in
showing others mercy, forgiveness, and love. See you in worship. Pastor Mark

Boy Scout Sunday
Boy Scout Sunday is February 7. More than 600,000 youth meet in more than
8,000 United Methodist churches each year as members of Scouts and other
youth organizations. Chapel sponsors the Boy Scouts, who hold about two
meetings each month at Chapel. The Boy Scout law says that a Scout is
reverent. Scouts of all ages promise to do their duty to God. These values
strengthen youth character in their family, community, and faith.

Transfiguration Sunday
We celebrate the revelation of Christ's glory before the passion so that we may
be strengthened to bear our cross and be changed into his likeness. The focus of
the Lenten season is renewed discipline in walking in the way of the cross and
rediscovery of the baptismal renunciation of evil and sin and our daily adherence
to Christ. At Easter, which reveals the fullness of Christs glory(foreshadowed in
the Transfiguration), Christians give themselves anew to the gospel at the Easter
Vigil where they share the dying and rising of Christ.

Christmas Eve
Chapel was filled Christmas Eve with joyful people who wanted to celebrate the
coming of Jesus birth! Garwin UMC joined us as we sang beloved Christmas
carols. The Matt Jackson family lit the Advent candle. Pastor Mark read from
Luke 2:1-20, and his message was entitled A Christmas Blessing. While
singing Silent Night, the candlelight service concluded the meaningful evening.

Three Reasons to Attend Worship Services By Matthew Westerholm
Why do we have to go to Sunday School and church again?
Children ask this question on a semi-regular basis. I know my three boys have given me many opportunities
to answer it. As a worship pastor, I am embarrassed to admit that I have found myself facing another service and
asking the same question: Why again? Did we fail last week, or do it wrong? Was last weeks service not enough?
I have not always had good answers at hand, beyond a biblical command not to neglect meeting together
(Hebrews 10:25), but over time Ive drawn encouragement from a broader view of Scripture and godly Christian
authors. Having faced the challenge to frame those encouragements in ways that kids can understand, and my own
heart will accept, allow me to pass on my best three answers:
So why should we attend corporate worship?
1. Because Jesus is alive.
We are going to church today because Jesus is alive. You may not remember this, but Jesus rose from the dead on
a Sunday morning. As the news spread, all of his friends spent that whole day telling each other the story and talking
about what it all meant. They named it The Lords Day. It was a thrilling way to spend the day, and so they decided
to do it again the next week. And every week ever since for two thousand years. So, think of it like your birthday. The
day you were born is so special to the people who love you that we celebrate it every single year. The day that Jesus
rose from the dead is so special to the people who love him that we celebrate it every single week!
2. Because we want to remember and practice the gospel.
We are going to church today to remember and practice the gospel. Some words are easier to learn than others. It
seems that no one needs to teach us words like mine and no! Other words are more difficult and take a lot of time
to learn words like Thank you and Im sorry. But those words are also important and we need to learn them.
Church is a place where we can practice these words in the most important ways. We can see our sin and what it
means. We can feel regret in our hearts and say, Im sorry, God, for sinning against you. We can hear his words of
forgiveness to us and say, Thank you, Jesus, for saving me. And just like we dont always feel sorry or thankful when
we say these words, sometimes our broken hearts dont feel sorrow for our sin or thankfulness for our Savior. But we
gather together to ask the Lord to mend those hearts and to help us feel the truth of what we are saying. And we see
the words that used to be natural mine and no! become harder and harder to say.
3. Because we want to learn to love people different from us.
We are going to church today to love people who are different from us. Almost everybody only wants to spend time
with people who they feel most comfortable around. People generally want to hang out with people who have their
same amount of money, have the same skin color, are their same age, like the same food, and watch the same TV
shows. Other kinds of people are strange to them. But there is a big danger with that, because the world is filled with
many people who are very different. If we only spend time with people like ourselves, we will be tricked into believing
that we are better than those who are not like us.
The most basic thing about us is that we are sinners who need a Savior.
At its best, our church helps us avoid that problem. It reminds us that, fundamentally, the most basic thing about us is
not our money, our skin color, our age, or our favorite tastes. The most basic thing about us is that we are sinners who
need a Savior. Because of that, our church is filled with people who are different from us, all of us learning that we are
not better than others, but are all in need of the same grace. We recognize that the gospel reunites estranged people
with their God.

_______________________________________________________________________________________________
My name is Jean Holthaus and I am a licensed clinical social worker and have been
practicing for sixteen years. I work with individuals, couples, and families. I have a BA in
elementary education and have taught every grade K-8, although primarily I taught junior high
math and science.
I received my MSW from the University of Iowa and have done extensive training
around integrating faith and therapy--including the training to be a Commission Pastor through
the RCA. I have also received training from Cloud and Townsend (boundaries), Terry Wardle
(spiritual formation and healing), Gary Smalley (relationships), John Briere (healing from
trauma) and many others. I believe Christ is the source of all healing and my desire is to be a
vessel through which the healing power and love of Christ can flow to touch the lives of those in
need.
I grew up in the church and became actively engaged in following Christ as my savior
when I was in eighth grade. In my mid-twenties, I experienced a life-altering crisis which
exposed my deep woundedness as well as my performance based life and faith. This crisis
set into motion a journey to know and live intimately connected to a God who not only saved
me, but loves me and wants to be an active part of every aspect of my life.
As I learned to live believing I was loved by God independent of anything I could every
say or do, I experienced deep healing in my life and grew in my desire to walk with others on
their healing journey. As I listen and follow the leading of the Holy Spirit, I have the privilege of
walking with people into places of deep wounding and pain in their lives as a vessel of Gods
lovelove which brings healing and restoration.
As a Christian therapist, I believe biological, psychological, emotional, social, and
spiritual factors all contribute to the problems people encounter. I believe God also works
through each of these avenues to bring healing. I actively integrate faith in every therapy
session at the level my clients feel comfortable, but my faith undergirds all I do in therapy. It is
a privilege and a blessing to walk with people on their healing journeys.
Jean can be reached at the Pella Clinic of Pine Rest by calling (641) 628-9599.
