First Nations Research Assignment

You have been assigned a tribe to research. This tribe is very important
to the identity of Alberta. It is your job to find out as much as you can
about the early life of your tribe and create a display for presentation.
The question you need to think about as you work through this project
is:
How have the First Nation people contributed to Albertas
identity?
Part 1: Research
1. You will be assigned on of the following First Nation groups:
Cree Nation, Sarcee (Tsuu Tina) Nation, Siksika Nation, Piikani
Nation
2. Begin your research using your library books, Internet sites
(mastersgrade4.com), etc.
3. Read your resources with a purpose. You are looking for specific
information on your First Nation group. Find information for the
following subtopics:
Region/climate
Homes
Food
Clothing
Transportation
Family roles
Government
Spiritual beliefs
The arts
Recreation
As you find relevant information, sort it under the appropriate
subtopic. Make point form notes IN YOUR OWN WORDS on the chart
provided.

Part 2: Gathering of Tribes

Now that you have thoroughly researched a particular First Nation
group, you will have the opportunity to share your expertise on this
topic.
1. Meet with your classmates who were assigned the same First
Nation group.
2. You and your group will be completing the second part of this
project together.
3. Your tribe is responsible for completing three main components.

Visual Display: Your tribe will need to create a display that

reflects the culture and lifestyle of your tribe. Your display must
include a visual representation of a home (you could build an
example as well), a mural of artwork, various artifacts (tools,
toys, etc.) and any other aspects of your choice. Your display will
also need to highlight the guiding question: How have the First
Nation people contributed to Albertas identity?
Performance: Each tribe must be prepared to give visitors a
tour of their display. Each tribe must teach a phrase in the
language of your tribe AND a traditional game or a
dance/musical number that reflects the culture of your tribe.
PowerPoint: Each tribe must compile all of their research and
create a creative and engaging PowerPoint that will showcase all
of your learning that is not included on the visual display. This
would include: food, clothing, transportation, family roles,
government, spiritual beliefs, and recreation.
4. Within your tribe, decide who will be responsible for completing
which tasks. Each component will likely need 1-2 people. Fill in
the assignments below.
