he 2016 WWETT Show has arrived, and the biggest event in wastewater
will create a bonanza of networking opportunities for PROs in
attendance, their valued business partners exhibiting products
and the editor of your trade publication. If youre in Indianapolis now (Feb.
17-20) and headed over to the Indiana Convention Center for the WWETT
Show opening, I want to hear from you right now.
There are a number of ways to reach me in Indy. Call or text me at
920/328-8692. Send an email to editor@promonthly.com. Or go to the
WWETT Show registration area and ask one of the friendly COLE Publishing
representatives to track me down.
I view the WWETT Show as a unique opportunity to meet face to face
with contractors from across the country and beyond. Many of my most
meaningful business relationships in the portable sanitation industry have
been forged at our annual February gathering. Im sure thats true for all
of you, too. We can enjoy a conversation over lunch. We can discuss new
technologies seen on the exhibit floor. I can meet your family members or
crew leaders you bring along to Indy.
And this year theres an exciting new way for us to get together and talk
shop: the WWETT Show Kickoff Party at Lucas Oil Stadium, held between
5-8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 17, and Thursday, Feb. 18. The show organizers
from COLE Publishing wanted to provide another venue for attendees and
exhibitors to network, and they came up with an over-the-top idea: bring
everyone together on the 50-yard line inside the home of the Indianapolis
Colts. How cool is that?
So after a day of Education Day seminars, and again after the first full
day of exhibits being open, you can head down to the football field and
spend time with your closest 10,000 friends in the wastewater industry. Cold
beverages and snacks will be served around the popular COLE Pub truck,
and exhibitor sponsors will have displays to check out.
TALKING POINTS
Ill be on hand both evenings. So lets have a chat. About what? Id enjoy
exchanging ideas on a variety of timely topics that have an impact on your
portable restroom business, such as:
Thriving in a competitive marketplace: Do you face enormous
competition in your territory? Are some PROs what you would call cut-rate
or low-ball contractors? If so, what techniques have you developed to deal
with this business-stifling phenomenon? I can share what PROs tell me
about dealing with this revenue-crushing threat.
How do you hire enough good workers? This issue has been coming
to a head over the past few years as contractors continue to rebuild in a
healthy economy. Competition for workers can be fierce in many parts

of the country, and Id like to hear your thoughts about recruiting and
retaining employees. Lets start an informal roundtable discussion between
the hash marks.
Interesting service diversification plays: What products and services
have you added in recent years designed to roll up more revenue from each
of your regular, satisfied customers? Im hearing about a lot of synergies
between restrooms and certain site services like party rentals, storage
containers and mobile offices. Find out what other contractors are doing.
Looking ahead to your next vacuum rig: Whats your favorite
new accessory on service trucks? Do you have tips to make trucks more
ergonomic and easier to use for your technicians? Whats the perfect balance
of waste and freshwater capacity to serve your business? Get tips from other
successful PROs.
Raising the industrys image: No matter how hard PROs try, it seems
theres a lingering poor public image for portable restrooms. Lets talk about
ways to combat that through no-compromise clean service and drivers with
a more professional appearance. PROs can share their ideas on how to build
up the industry.
GET ONTO THE PAGES OF PRO
An important part of my WWETT Show networking experience is
identifying companies to feature in the magazine throughout the year. I
often receive emails from contractors asking how they can be considered
for a cover story in PRO. I enjoy explaining the publishing process to them
and subsequently working with some of the top-notch folks in the industry
on stories.
If you are interested in seeing your company featured, lets talk about it
during the WWETT Show. Here are some of the ways you can show off your
hardworking crew and capable equipment in the magazine:
PROfile: We look for a wide variety of contractors to include in our PROfile
feature, from the seasoned veterans whove been providing restrooms for
40 years to the fresh, new PROs just starting out. Each contractors story

We enjoy bringing those stories to life through words and photos. Youll be
proud to see the efforts of you and your workers recognized in a national

On Location: I want to hear about your biggest and most unique special

about your big project and how your crew pulled it off.
PRO Rides: Are you ordering a new vacuum truck at the WWETT Show?
Lots of restroom operators do every year. Tell me about it and well give it
a full-page spread in our PRO Rides feature. Seeing your new rig in print,
complete with personalized graphics and a showroom shine, reflects the
professionalism of your company. It also gives props to the many industry
craftsmen who put your truck together.
In the Garage: PROs are dedicated to the service side of the business,
but they are also passionate about their equipment. Are you looking for ways
to improve maintenance of your vehicles? Are you interested in the latest
add-ons that make work trucks more convenient and safer to use? Lets
explore ideas about improving trucks and equipment you use on a daily
basis through our In the Garage feature.
ITS YOUR TURN
So Im counting on you to look me up at the WWETT Show and share
your thoughts about the dynamic portable sanitation industry. Your input
will help us continually improve the magazine and stimulate important
discussions about professionalism and profitability for PROs.

with the many rewards and challenges of business ownership. Write to her with
questions, comments or topic suggestions at thewordhouse@ameritech.net.

should after-hours Emailing count as work?

ExpEcting EmployEEs to answEr too many latE night mEssagEs
is not an lol mattEr it could cost you ovErtimE pay
By Judy Kneiszel

echnology has obviously changed how people work. Company-issued

smartphones and laptops to workers provide flexibility that benefits
both employee and employer. As the use of technology has become
integrated into jobs, however, electronic devices seem to have created a perpetual workplace. And this, if youre not vigilant, can become costly for you
as a business owner.
The number you have reached
If youve ever logged on to your laptop or smartphone with the intention of quickly checking your work email and looked up an hour or two later,
you know how time can fly when youre in cyberspace. As a business owner,
being on-call comes with the territory, but you cant expect the same dedication from workers unless youre willing to pay for their time.
Consider how frequently you call, email, text or message employees
after hours during what should be their personal time. Do you expect an
immediate response? The very occasional and truly quick question is one
thing, but if all the after-hours and offsite communications add up to significant time, this could be counted as work time for an exempt (hourly) employee. Face it, an employee is not having a 15-minute conversation with
you via text message because they want to be your BFF. They think they have
to keep responding to continue being your employee.
How big of a problem is off-hours work becoming? Its not just disrupting family dinner, its disturbing the Department of Labor. Federal labor regulators have reported that they may revise a standard governing the amount
of work time outside regular work hours that is considered too insignificant
to require compensation.
According to the Fair Labor Standards Act, hours worked are all
hours an employee participates in work-related tasks benefiting the employer that the employer is aware of. What does that mean? The legal
language says the employer suffers or permits the employees work.
This means time the employee is allowed to work, as well as the hours
they are required to work, regardless of location. The bottom line is its
your responsibility to make sure employees arent putting in too much
unpaid work time, including time spent on electronic devices after official work hours.
have a clear company policy
Make sure after-hours work-related calls, texts and emails to hourly
employees are reserved for true emergencies. Nothing that can be put off
until the employee is on the clock should be discussed after hours. Make
sure this policy is clear to all employees. Salaried employees should not give
hourly employees the impression that they have to be on-call and ready to
respond every time they have a 2 a.m. brainstorm.

12

February 2016

Portable Restroom Operator

Just having a policy against off-the-clock work isnt enough. Sometimes

its impossible to avoid. Also have a record all time worked policy and
reiterate that this includes work done at home via company-issued smartphones or laptops.
If there is a lot of off-hours work or communication happening, come
up with a system for hourly employees to track their work activity outside of
normal business hours and be compensated for it.
When possible, provide advanced authorization if you really do need
an hourly employee to work from home after hours. Also, train supervisors
that they are obligated to report to management any off-the-clock work
they observe by hourly employees. This will nip the problem in the bud.
If employees work different hours from each other, a simple way
to reduce off-the-clock electronic communication is to instruct workers that when they send an email to an hourly employee after hours they
should put a directive in the subject line asking the recipient to respond
when they return to work. This, of course, is for non-emergency communications.
more workers are becoming eligible
Questions regarding overtime work via devices are likely to become
more common as the federal government considers changes to the rules
governing who is eligible for overtime pay.
Proposed rule changes likely to go into effect this year will increase
the number of workers who fall under the protection of the Fair Labor
Standards Act by bumping up the salary threshold at which workers are
eligible for overtime pay. That salary level has been around $23,000 a year
but is likely to be raised to more than $40,000 a year. That means someone
making $35,000 a year made too much to be eligible for overtime in 2015
but may be eligible for overtime in 2016 if he or she works more than 40
hours a week.
Those newly eligible workers higher up the pay scale generally have
more responsibility and are more likely to have a company-issued smartphone or laptop. They could therefore be owed overtime pay when the
late night minutes spent chatting about the next days work schedule start
adding up.
iTs jusT common sense
While technology is sophisticated, regulating its off-hours use is common sense. If workers are spending significant time off the clock working via
electronic devices and can document it, they should get paid for it. Having
that front of mind may just help you get a little more R and R as well. After
all, it takes two to text.

Houston business entrepreneurs and

longtime pals combine skills to transform an
underperforming portable restroom operation
into an ironclad success By PeTer KenTer

cquiring portable restroom company Texas Waste Co. was only the
beginning of a formula for success that saw its new owners modernize operations, upgrade service levels, rationalize routing and completely rewrite contracts that worked against the business.
Travis Vargo, an attorney, and Doug McReaken, an entrepreneur with
a background in information technology and human resources, have been
friends for almost 20 years since attending Texas Tech University together.
Weve wanted to own a business together for quite a while, says Vargo.
McReaken is a member of Vistage, a business entrepreneurial group,
where he heard the business was for sale. Texas Waste was founded in 1999
in Alvin, 30 miles south of Houston. Vargo liked the future possibilities for
container and fencing rentals to build new revenue streams. McReaken
looked at the business assets and ran financials and projections.

where we could improve the quality of

put a solid infrastructure into place, and
exponentially grow it, McReaken says.
We knew we could take on the area

TAKING STOCK
The deal closed in August 2013,
and the owners got straight to work
at the 5-acre facility. Business assets
included: roughly 300 restrooms
mostly PolyJohn and some Five Peaks;
10 250-gallon holding tanks from
PolyJohn; and five stand-alone handwash stations from PolyJohn. The sale
also included two vacuum trucks: an

and a 2006 Ford F-550 with a 700-gallon
waste/200-gallon freshwater steel tank and an engine-driven pump by
Jurop/Chandler.
A third of the restrooms were in good shape, a third passable, and a
third in bad shape, says Vargo. We cannibalized 35 units to build 275 that
were good to go.
Vargo began to tighten up the company contracts, rewriting vague
clauses to clarify responsibilities of both supplier and clients, and providing
the company with greater leverage in settling disputes. McReaken began
to revise accounting, scheduling and reporting policies and procedures.
He temporarily moved dispatch to his own offices in nearby Pearland,
leveraging the infrastructure of Media Riders, a staffing agency owned and
operated by his family.
A supervisor was hired to oversee the companys two employees
however, both left within six months.
We needed to take it to the next level, and they had difficulty adapting,
says McReaken. They were still faxing invoices and had no interest in using
either software or new technology.

BOOTS ON THE GROUND

Vargo and McReaken also worked to bridge the gap between ownership
and boots-on-the-ground expertise, registering for the 2014 Water &
Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport (WWETT) Show.
We split up the room, and learned all we could about the units,
the trucks, the pumps, the capacities, the prices, and what similar-sized
companies were doing on the other side of the country, says Vargo.
We took an alpha male approach and walked up to anyone who looked
successful and asked what made them successful, and about any mistakes
they might have made along the way. The pumper community proved to
be very helpful.
Initially, the company covered a territory about 20 miles around the
Alvin operations yard, including Houston.
However, we started to get phone calls with warm and fuzzy promises
of increased revenue that inched us out of our territory into west Houston
and other locations, says Vargo. We became obsessed with growing so fast
that we were chasing contracts farther afield without increasing prices to
cover costs.
Realizing the business required a management voice with more
experience, the owners brought in Jason Kelley as a consultant in August
2014. Kelley is an ex-officer with the U.S. Marine Corps and possesses a
long history of working with service-oriented businesses, including waste
services and portable restroom operations. After 30 days, he was hired full
time as company president and operations manager.
I have a very lean approach to management, says Kelley. Thats

essential for a company starting from a smaller fleet and customer base.
The owners give me a lot of operational control as we continue to take the
business from recovery into growth. I also take a very structured approach
to human resources, making sure that everybody is pulling their weight and
providing regular feedback.
TRIMMING THE SERVICE AREA
Analyzing operations, the management team decided to trim the
service area.
You can drive revenue with unhealthy growth, but that isnt profitable,
says Kelley. We told clients on the service fringe that rates were going up.
Many left, but a few stayed on. Were now focused on route density to drive
profit to the bottom line.
Today, the company has built its service area around recurring anchor
clients. It largely covers a client-dense triangular area covering Houston,
south to Alvin and then 35 miles southeast to Galveston. About 80 percent
of the client base involves longer-term accounts, including natural gas
facilities, construction sites, pipeline construction operations, seaports and
parks. About 20 percent includes events, such as fairs and weddings.

The law and the profits

If you write your own portable restroom contracts, chances are they
contain holes big enough to drive a vacuum truck through them. As a
business attorney and co-owner of Texas Waste Co., Travis Vargo wants
PROs to make sure their contracts are working for them.
Adopting stronger contracts will raise the bar of professionalism
and get customers to expect an industry standard regarding terms of
service and payment, says Vargo. You need to condition them on first
contact as to what they can expect.
For example, he notes that some clients who want to exit a restroom
contract make unsubstantiated claims about substandard service.
Our contracts contain two agreements, one for service and one
for rental, he says. If they complain about the service without cause,
theyre still on the hook for rental and theyre free to contract with a
third-party service provider.
The Houston area is subject to hurricanes. We require the customer to return the unit in a condition substantially similar to the one
in which it was delivered, says Vargo. If the unit is destroyed by high
winds because the client failed to secure it, the cost of replacing it is
their responsibility.
Likewise, clients who block access to units will receive an off-route
service call only at a premium to the original contract.
Texas Waste Co. has also incorporated a clause prescribing interest
charges on unpaid accounts.
All you want is to be paid what youre owed, says Vargo. If youre
negotiating on the original amount, youre discounting your profit. This
way you can negotiate the interest charge and still recover your profit
its an extra chip in your stack.

PUMPING UP
The Ford F-550 is still
pumping, but the fleet has
expanded to include four
additional trucks, all with
aluminum tanks: a pair of 2013
Hinos, one offering 1,500 gallons
waste/500 gallons freshwater and
a Moro USA pump from FlowMark
Vacuum Trucks, the other with
1,000 gallons waste/500 gallons
freshwater with a Jurop/Chandler
pump from Satellite; a 2013 Ford
F-550 with 442 gallons waste/178
gallons freshwater and a Conde
pump (Westmoor Ltd.) from
Satellite; and a 2001 Ford F-350
offering 300 gallons waste/125
gallons freshwater and a Masport pump from Imperial Industries.
A 1999 Dodge 2500 pickup is used for deliveries. It hauls portables using
two trailers built in-house, each carrying as many as 10 units. An additional
12-unit trailer was supplied by F.M. Manufacturing.
Accounting and routing software is supplied by Clear Computing
software for service management and dispatch, purchased following the
2014 WWETT Show.

Hustling Wisconsin crew puts it in high gear to

service one of the Midwests oldest and largest
collector car shows By KeN WysOCKy

THE TEAM
Wade Pennau is the owner of Packerland Portables in Wautoma,
Wisconsin. His wife, Tammy, assists with the Iola Old Car Show, along
with his father, Steve, and his son, Casey, 23, who drives a large vacuum
truck. Regular route drivers Mike Meyer and Matthew Pingel each
drive one of the two vacuum trucks required to handle daily restroom
service; Mikes wife, Christine, helps Mike. Two other regular route
drivers, John Wenzel and Jake Roberts, also pitch in on a rotating basis.
Employee Neville Harris cleans and preps restrooms in the companys yard, and dispatcher
William Pierotti keeps things humming in an orderly fashion, says Pennau.
COMPANY HISTORY
A serial entrepreneur who also owns a car wash, a bike shop, a septic pumping company,
an equipment and party rental outfit, and a ministorage facility, Pennau got into portable
sanitation in 2000 when he bought an existing restroom business in Wautoma to complement
the equipment rental business (Wautoma Rental Center). Pennau, 44, continued to grow
the company through acquisitions by purchasing another restroom company and a septic
service company in 2013 and 2014. The company now employs 11 people.

a pump made by Masport Inc.: a 2010
Dodge 5500 with a 575-gallon waste/300gallon freshwater steel tank; a 2006 GMC
4500 with a 775-gallon waste/400-gallon
freshwater aluminum tank; and a 2005
Ford F-550 with a 575-waste/300-gallon
freshwater tank. Packerland also owns
a 1998 Dodge 2500 with a 200-gallon
waste/100-gallon slide-in steel tank with
a Conde pump from Westmoor Ltd.; its
used as a backup truck.
In addition, the company also owns 600 restrooms, most from
PolyPortables and some from Satellite Industries Inc. and T.S.F. Company
Inc. That includes 16 handicapped-accessible units and four ADA-compliant
units from T.S.F. In addition, Packerland offers 20 hand-wash stations made
by T.S.F. and PolyPortables. Packerland also owns a self-fabricated shower
trailer, fashioned from a semi-trailer,
and two PolyPortables urinal units. For
restroom transport, the company uses
a trailer from McKee Technologies Inc.
and units fabricated in-house.
THE MAIN EVENT
Established in 1972, the Iola Old Car
Show (www.iolaoldcarshow.com) held
every July is one of the Midwests largest
and oldest auto shows. It hosts about
120,000 spectators during its Thursdaythrough-Sunday run and features more
than 2,000 show cars, 4,400 swap spots,
a car corral for selling vintage cars, and
1,600 campsites, all spread across 300
acres in central Wisconsin.
Its our biggest special event sort
of like our Super Bowl, Pennau says.

EFFICIENT WASTE DISPOSAL
The nearest treatment center that accepts restroom waste is 18 miles
away. So to minimize back-and-forth trips for disposal, the drivers off-load
waste into a larger septic service truck: a 2006 Peterbilt with a 3,600-gallon
tank, built by Imperial Industries Inc. with a Masport pump. Pennaus son,
Casey, drives that vehicle and makes about one disposal trip each day.
We can fit about five loads (from the smaller portable sanitation trucks)
in the Peterbilt, Pennau points out. It helps us keep our operating expenses
down for the event.

Employees start picking up restrooms on Monday morning and pickups
conclude by Wednesday morning. In all, Packerland devotes almost 10 full

Its pretty intense, but we kind of like it, Pennau says. Its a lot of long
hours. But the car show staff is very easy to work with, which helps make it
a success. On our end, our guys are invaluable. Everyone does their part

WWETT PREVIEW

Time to Unwind
Country music singer Jerrod Niemann ready to give WWETT
Show attendees, exhibitors a great show By Cory Dellenbach

t doesnt matter if youre a country music fan. Jerrod Niemann is going to

pull you in when he hits the WWETT Show Industry Appreciation Party
stage Feb. 19 in Indianapolis.
You have to be aware of what youre around, says Niemann, country
music star and entertainer for the party. If youre doing your own show or
people are there just because of you its one thing. If you are part of a party
that has already existed for many years, we try to be a chameleon of sorts.
Well do our own songs, but well also throw in a couple different ones, too,
from rock and blues and everything.
No matter what he sings, Niemann promises a fun time for everyone at
the Indiana Convention Centers Sagamore Ballroom.
Theres just something to be said about being around people who are
pretty much just like you hardworking, small-town Americans, Niemann
says. For me, I love being out there and hanging out with everybody.
IN HIS BLOOD
Country music has always been in Niemanns blood, and he thanks his
mother for that: I was doomed from the beginning hearing country music
from the womb. My parents ran a bar when my mom was pregnant with me,
and I think hearing all those country songs on the jukebox got me going.

From an early age, Niemann was influenced by country acts such as

Lefty Frizzell, Keith Whitley and George Strait. After graduating from high
school, he attended South Plains College in Levelland, Texas, pursuing an
Associate of Arts degree. He began his professional career by singing and
playing acoustic guitar in Texas clubs and bars.
I did that for about a year, just my guitar and me, he says. Then I
moved to Nashville and started working
out there. Music is one of those things
where its such an amazing thing to be

NEW
LOOK

Five Peaks is a family owned company and proud of it. For three generations we have been providing the highest quality products for
the portable sanitation industry. Still, it doesnt feel like that long ago when we began serving our customers with a total commitment to
their portable restroom needs. It seems like yesterday when our designers came up with a revolutionary restroom design and filled it with
standard features. Features that no one can compete with for quality or price. Still we thought it was time for a new look. The logo has
received a makeover - a bit bolder with a more modern typeface. Its a reflection of the progess Five Peaks has made over all these years.
But as we continue to move forward you can rest assured that our dedication to excellence isnt going anywhere.

FIVE PEAKS. Its time to get more out of portable sanitation.

Three nights of
WWETT Show fun
By Luke Laggis
You come to Indy for the tools and equipment, the people and excitement. Its the
one time of the year when the whole industry comes together. So lets have a party.
COLE Publishing celebrates the occasion every year with the Industry Appreciation Party. Its a chance for everyone to relax and enjoy themselves. This year, the
WWETT Kickoff Party will give you two nights to enjoy leading up to the Industry
Appreciation Party.
It all starts Wednesday, Feb. 17. After the final bell rings on Education Day, you
can head over to Lucas Oil Stadium, connected to the Indiana Convention Center, for
a cold beverage and complimentary hors doeuvres while you network with manufacturers and peers. The event will repeat on Thursday, Feb. 18. The hours are 5 to
8 p.m. on both nights.
Exhibitors have been invited to co-host the event along with COLE Publishing, and
the COLE Pub truck will return to serve as the central bar. Attendees and exhibitors
can kick back, relax, share stories or solve problems with industry peers.
We are very excited to see how creative the co-hosts decide to be, says Brad
Bisnette, the shows coordinator. All will be providing a good time for sure.
On Friday night, the focus will shift from Lucas Oil Stadium to the Sagamore Ballroom in the Indiana Convention Center for the Industry Appreciation Party. Country
music star Jerrod Niemann will perform a private concert for WWETT attendees.
Beers are a quarter and the show is free.
Visit www.wwettshow.com for complete details on the show. The Kickoff and
Industry Appreciation parties are free for all registered attendees.

Jury; Free the Music; Yellow Brick Road; and High Noon. In 2013, his single
Drink to That All Night hit No. 4 on the U.S. country charts and No. 1 on
U.S. country airplay charts.
I got my foot in the door writing songs in Nashville, and its always fun
being able to write your own material, Niemann says. Every once in a while
you find a song you wish you had written.
NEW MUSIC
One of those songs is Blue Bandana, his newest single. The song will
be a part of his new album set for release this year.
When I heard the song, it just took me to so many cool places and really took me to a lot of cool faces, too, Niemann says. The song tells the story
of a fan attending concerts wearing the same blue bandana and the singer
noticing it each time. Just traveling this country you see a lot of people who
are kind enough to pack up in their cars and do a road trip, spending their
hard-earned money to see us. Ive never really done a song that is a thankyou to those folks out there, but this song does that.
The new album will combine music hes done before a country/rock
mix and the more traditional country sound. Its a wide array of music,
Niemann says.
Hell perform some of the new songs from that album at the WWETT
Show and hopes everyone can relax and get their minds off work and anything else going on in their lives.
The real world can be quite a hard place at times for people, and if we
can be the guys to get that off their minds for at least 90 minutes, then weve
done our jobs, Niemann says. I just always try to keep a thread of laughter
and craziness at our shows if we can.

Lifting Bracket Option on

T.S.F. Company Freestanding Sink
Adds Value for Construction Site
Placements
By Craig Mandli
The portable restroom and hand-wash units used on high-rise construction sites need to be durable, compact and maneuverable. Thats why
T.S.F. Company went back to the drawing board to give a new constructionsite-friendly design to the Tuff-Jon 90-Gallon Freestanding Sink. The company added a durable lifting bracket to the unit and featured it at the 2015
Water & Wastewater Equipment, Treatment & Transport (WWETT) Show.
The bracket makes it easy to move the sink unit using a crane or skidsteer to where its needed even to the top of the building, says Ashley
Schenk, sales manager with T.S.F. Company. It enables work crews to wash
their hands, encouraging proper sanitation in areas that arent always the
easiest to get down from.
The heavy-duty aluminum lifting bracket has a 1/4-inch wire cable,
weighs 30 pounds, and is safety orange for easy job site visibility. According
to Schenk, the product fits a need that arose amongst the construction portion of their target market.
Weve made a lifting bracket for our restrooms for a while, so some of our
construction customers wondered if we could make something that would
enable them to lift the portable sink to the top of a high-rise, says Schenk.
A lot of workers on the site will spend all day dozens of floors up, and with
limited means to get down, they need facilities available to them up there.
The hand-wash station is equipped with two sinks, hands-free with
foot-operated pumps; towel dispenser; a 10-cup-capacity soap dispenser;
and a trash container. The unit is constructed from easy-to-clean polyethylene, with 45-gallon waste and freshwater capacities, protective skid plate
and freshwater drain plug. The unit weighs 85 pounds.
The sink is great for special events because it is easy to move and
clean, says Schenk. It has been a popular product for us for a long time,

construction projects.

and the lifting bracket just makes

it that much more versatile.
The 2015 WWETT Show was the first time T.S.F. displayed the popular
sink with its lifting bracket upgrade, and according to Schenk, the response
from the attendees was exactly what she was looking for.
The feedback that I heard on our sink was overwhelmingly great, she
says. Its always our goal to help our customers get the most out of our products, and the bracket helps do just that.
Schenk says T.S.F. is coming to WWETT 2016 with some new ideas and
potential upgrades.
We always love coming to this show, not only to get our products seen
by the industry, but to touch base with all our customers and friends weve
made over the years, she says. Well definitely have something new to
show, which always depends on what our customers ask for. Our product
lines are driven by what they want. 800/843-9286; www.tuff-jon.com.

4 Steps to Turn Around an Irate Customer

Your CuSTomer IS mAd AS hell And he wAnTS Some AnSwerS. leArn how To
defuSe AnY CuSTomer ComplAInT And geT Them bACk on Your SIde.
by Joe Curcillo

eborah is sitting in her office reviewing monthly reports as she listens

to routine bustling of her staff. Suddenly, she hears a single voice
amidst the regular noise. It is Mary, the receptionist, attempting
to get a word in as she deals with a rather stubborn and authoritative
customer. The call is placed on hold and is transferred into Deborahs
office. Mary announces, Mr. Money is on the phone; he is angry and is
demanding your help.
As she reaches for her phone, Deborah recognizes that how she handles the next few seconds will determine whether Mr. Money will raise or
lower the bottom line on the next monthly report. Like Deborah, in the
time it takes to reach for the phone and say hello, you must have the focus and knowledge necessary to take control and lead the caller back into
your corner.
As you listen to the complaint, pay attention to how the caller became
disgruntled. Many times the caller has reached your desk because someone
in the chain of command failed to listen and address their concerns.
Keep in mind that the best way to initiate control is to take the high
ground. Not just the high road of virtue and doing the right thing, but the
high ground as a vantage point to observe the situation as a whole. Prepare
to remove yourself from the fray and look at the big picture. The best means
of accomplishing this is to remember these four rules:
1. Do not speak until you have truly listened.
The opposite of speaking is waiting to speak. Listening is a separate
task, and in fact is an art. If youre waiting to speak, you are preparing to address the other person with words.
The easiest of all irate customers to deal with is the one who just wants
to be heard. They begin to tell their story to each person they encounter on
the way to your office. Their repeated rehearsal of the story should be your
first indication that all they need is understanding and reassurance. They
want someone to listen.
2. Do not defend until you have heard the attack.
Step back and allow the speaker to talk. As you listen, do not formulate
your responses, but follow the speaker with an eye toward understanding
the nature of their accusations and allegations. The ability to effectively
challenge someones argument hinges on you understanding his or her
argument.
Taking control of a situation requires you to pay attention to what is being said so that you may take all youve heard and use it collectively as you
map out your proposed solution. Adopting the other persons arguments in
your solution will make it much more difficult for a person to rebuff your
offer of resolution.

3. Identify the true nature of the complaint and the complainant.

There are many reasons why a customer complains. Dissatisfaction
with a product or service is obvious, but some complaints are born and
nurtured in environments outside of your control. Take control by listening and asking questions about the circumstances that led the customer to
your door.
Some people are simply disappointed with your entire industry. Lawyers and mechanics will identify with this. It is necessary to set yourself apart
from the herd and let the speaker know that you care. Some complaints are
born from a lack of clear expectations. Explore their concerns and guide
them back to a more realistic path.
The most difficult of all complaints comes from the customer who, due
to their own shortcomings, doesnt understand the reason your products or
service is failing is their inability to follow instructions or guidance. It is essential to speak to these people as you would to a friend. Make sure your
vocabulary and speech is simple enough that they can follow your directions
to the letter. But do not come across as condescending. This can be avoided
by remaining social and human as you address your customer.
4. Focus on areas in which you and your company can improve.
Even the most irrational or self-absorbed customers can help you
improve service. By looking for areas of improvement in each and every
conversation, you will not only actively listen, but you will grow and become better.
Consider the following checklist as a starting point. Obviously, your
industry may have specific questions or concerns that you should include.
These questions will help you resolve your next irate customer moment:
Whom have they spoken to already?
What remedies have failed?
Is the problem real or imagined?
Is it related to a personality conflict with a member of your team?
What are their expectations?
Are the expectations something you can address?
How many people have they spoken with at your company?
Has everyone given them sound advice or bad advice?
Is the disappointment with your company and you?
Have they allowed their anger with your industry to fester?
Have they been given sound advice but the problem rests with
their inability to understand and listen?
What can I learn from the situation to improve my bottom line?

What Erases Graffiti Pencil Marks?

From GooF oFF to maGic ErasErs, Pros sharE thEir tiPs
to rEmovE stubborn marks From rEstrooms
Question: Does anyone have the dos or donts for removing pencil
marks on restrooms? I havent found graffiti removers that work.

The giant eraser idea isnt that great because if the eraser is dirty it will
wipe that grime on the plastic or it leaves a residue.
u u u

Answers:
I carry a large pink eraser in the truck with me and just rub it off.
u u u

Ive had good luck with the Sunrise Environmental products for removing pencil marks.
u u u

Tagaway Graffiti Remover wipes them clean off, along with a bunch of
other things. Unfortunately it doesnt remove the markers that embed themselves in the plastic.

We just tried the Mr. Clean Magic Eraser. I havent tried pencil myself; one of my employees said it took it off. I know they work great for strap
marks and hard water stains.
u u u

Not sure about pencil marks, but oven cleaner has taken off our markertype graffiti and other messages.
u u u

Toico sells the magic sponges. They work great for pencil and will remove Sharpie shadow if done promptly.
u u u

We use Goof Off spray. It works great, even on the tough graffiti inks.
Just spray, wipe off and give a good rinse.

The posiTive impacT of porTable saniTaTion is explained in a few words
By Karleen Kos

ts been two years since I was invited to join the PSAI. In those first months
I talked to hundreds of industry members about portable sanitation. Repeatedly I heard things like:
Portable sanitation gets no respect.
People dont really understand what we provide.
Its just so hard to explain and Im not sure most folks want to know
anyway.
I just wish there was an easy way to describe what we do, industry
members would say earnestly. We need to work on our image.
At the PSAI, we percolated a lot of ideas. Then last summer, while
working on a big finish for a new video, it hit us. Portable sanitation
provides:

CRESCENT TANK MFG.

BETTER WORK SITES, BETTER WEEKENDS, AND A BETTER WORLD.

As we thought more about these words and ideas, we realized how
powerful and memorable they are in telling the story very succinctly.
Better work sites. In developed countries, portable sanitation plays
one of its biggest roles by providing workers with a private, dignified and
environmentally friendly place to answer natures call, sparing employers
the losses in productivity that accompany the next best alternative.
Better weekends. Portable sanitation makes long outdoor events
possible, ensuring that the fun doesnt have to stop when someones
bladder gives out.
Better world. Portable sanitation has a positive global impact by
improving the quality of life for people lacking proper sanitation, staving off
diseases, and saving water.
These are all things those in the industry already know but have
struggled to explain. Who knew that three short phrases and a little
alliteration would capture it so well?
In September 2015, the PSAI board of directors adopted the Better
work sites, better weekends, better world language as the official tagline of
the PSAI.
Why does a tagline matter? Well, lets look at some other taglines to
illustrate that answer. Can you fill in these blanks? I bet you can.
Like a good neighbor _________ is there.
_________: Just Do It
There are some things money cant buy. For everything else theres
_________
A powerful tagline builds a brand by giving people something
to remember that captures its essence. Since the benefits of portable
sanitation are not well known outside our industry, we have a long way to
go to build the kind of positive associations that the brands above already
have. Luckily our new tagline captures the essence of our industrys good
work. It tells the story, and it will help you tell the story.
The whole process of positioning our industry and shaping our
image will take time and a methodical effort to educate customers
and stakeholders. PSAI cannot do it alone. Wont you work with us? Get
involved as a member. Or just get involved in things like World Portable
Sanitation Day. Help tell the story. Tag(line) youre it!
BETTER WORK SITES, BETTER WEEKENDS, AND A BETTER WORLD.
Are there products or tools PSAI could offer bearing this new tagline
that would help your business or public relations efforts? Share your
opinions at karleenk@psai.org.

worksites.

Work days last 8 hours or more. Can you imagine

what would happen if workers had nowhere to
answer natures call? Thats why portable sanitation is
an important part of any work site where permanent
restrooms are not available. These units provide a
safe, clean, and dignified place for employees. They
also keep neighborhoods clean, prevent the spread
of disease, conserve water and save money. The
US Occupational Safety and Health Administration
(OSHA) requires portable sanitation on most job sites.
Its the right thing - and the smart thing - to do.

iper blades are like a leaky roof you dont think about them until it
rains. Equally frustrating is having mud or winter slop splashed on
your windshield and only hearing the hum of the pump when you
press the washer button.
Keeping your wiper blades and washer fluid in tip-top condition might
not be high on your maintenance list, but like that leaky roof, youll appreciate a clean, streak-free windshield the next time it rains or snows.
To extend the life of your blades, wipe off the rubber element with a
damp paper towel to clear away dirt or debris when you fill up your vehicle.
Its also a good time to look for nicks or tears. In the winter, pull blades away
from the windshield prior to a storm to prevent
sticking, and use an ice scraper or defroster, not

When replacing blades, be sure to doublecheck for the correct size and connector system.
A blade that is too short or improperly installed
can lose its effectiveness and scratch your windshield. You can find the correct blades for your
vehicle online or at your local auto parts store.
You might also want to determine if a conventional, beam or hybrid blade is right for you.
Blade technology
Conventional blades are best recognized by
their skeletal framework and claw-like grips. The
more aerodynamic beam blades feature a onepiece design. An encased spring allows the blade
to conform to the curvature of the windshield. Small spoilers direct wind up
and away from the windshield at highway speed. Beam blades, which
have been on the market for about 10 years, are also less susceptible
to snow and ice buildup.
Hybrid blades combine the aerodynamic features and all-weather performance of beam blades with the multiple pressure points provided
by the best conventional, or bridge-style blades, says Kat Himaras, brand
manager for ANCO wiper blades, Federal-Mogul Motorparts.
As a result, you get strong, consistent blade-to-glass contact through
the full range of wiper arm motion, she says.
Another option is to replace conventional blades with winter blades
in the fall as part of your annual maintenance. Winter blades, designed for

extreme weather, have a rubber cover over the frame to prevent slush from freezing joints.
The worst thing on a wiper blade is ice, says
Peter Bukaty, group brand manager for ITW Global Brands,
maker of Rain-X products. Ice has a jagged edge and its hard. It can
shear and cause nicks in the rubber. When you get nicks in the rubber, that
part of the squeegee isnt touching the windshield. Youre going to have a
streak where that damage takes place.
And dont run wipers across a dry windshield unless your blade is a

The sizing may be different, but it should work fine for either application, he says.
washer fluids
When it comes to washer fluid, there are three basic formulas: summer
blend, winter blend and all-season. Some fluids have a bug remover. Rain-X
also adds a water repellent to its products and offers an additive that can be
mixed with other brands.
Ron Fausnight, ground technical manager for ITW, says the most important thing is to match the washer fluid to your climate. Summer fluids
contain mostly water and detergent, while winter and all-season blends
have methanol to prevent freezing. If you live where the temperature drops
below freezing or drive from a warm to cold environment, Fausnight recommends using all-season or winter fluid year-round.
The winter formulas work in the summer just fine, he says. But the
summer formulas do not work in the winter.
If you have summer fluid in your vehicle, you can gradually replace it
with a winter blend as the weather turns colder, although its recommended
that you simply pump it out on the windshield in fall and refill your system
with winter or all-season fluid.
A word of caution: Since most washer fluid contains methanol, it can
irritate skin and burn the eyes. Ideally, gloves and safety glasses should be
worn. If you do get some on your hands or splash it in your eyes, be sure to
rinse the area with water. Methanol can be toxic if ingested in large amounts,
so keep open containers away from pets and children. Methanol vapor is
also flammable. If you have an open container or spill a large amount in a
closed environment, its best not to light a match or do grinding or welding
until the vapor has dissipated.
A final tip: Keep your washer fluid reservoir full and tightly capped, especially in winter, to prevent the methanol from evaporating and reducing
the fluids effectiveness.

Were pretty

Its trade show time again, and this year,

were feeling a little nostalgic.
We all know times change, but some things
shouldnt. Thats why the PolyJohn guys still
believe in a higher standard of service.
Its about real people providing real solutions
that can make a real difference for your business.
And lets face it, that kind of commitment can be
hard to nd these days.
So whether youre an authority on portable
sanitation or just starting down the road, stop on
by and see us at Booth #2030. Lets talk about
what a true full-service experience can
do for you.
Oh yeah, and dont forget to
cruise by our happy hour. Well
be happy to ll er up if your
tank is running on empty.
