Building a Story

Lesson Plan for Grade 9, Creative Writing

EDUCATION STANDARDS
Write narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
well-chosen details, and well-structured event sequences.
a. Engage and orient the reader by setting out a problem, situation, or observation and its
significance, establishing one or multiple point(s) of view, and introducing a narrator and/or
characters; create a smooth progression of experiences or events.
b. Use narrative techniques, such as dialogue, pacing, description, reflection, and multiple plot
lines, to develop experiences, events, and/or characters.
c. Use a variety of techniques to sequence events so that they build on one another to create a
coherent whole and build toward a particular tone and outcome (e.g., a sense of mystery,
suspense, growth, or resolution).
d. Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture
of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters.
e. Provide a conclusion that follows from and reflects on what is experienced, observed, or
resolved over the course of the narrative
Common Core Standard

OBJECTIVES
1. To interview each other to gather information about the characters history
2. To write a creative story about your partners character based on their blogs and interview
questions.
3. Create a story using two of the narrative techniques in standard b and choosing a tone and
outcome from c.

LESSON GOALS
Students will be assigned a partner. The students will then read the
others journal blogs about their Minecraft character. Next the students
will interview each other gaining additional information about the

others character. They will then use the information gathered from the blogs and interview to
create a future story about the character.

PROCEDURES
1. Students will pair with a partner and read the others journal blogs on Minecraft
character.
2. Students will interview each other to gain additional information to create the story about
the character based on the information collected.
3. The students will choose at least two narrative techniques and create a tone and convey it
within the story.

ASSESMENTS
1. Does the story make clear and logic sense
2. Does the writer correctly use two of the narrative techniques
3. Does the writer correctly set the tone

CLOSURE
By utilizing the previous blog posts and additional information gathered from the
interview the writer has the opportunity to build a creative off of another creative. This
also gives the student the opportunity to practice asking the right questions and
developing thoughtful responses. This also enables the student to gather information and
deceiver what information she will use to create a new story. By requiring the student
uses two different narrative techniques the student is displaying her understand of what
they are and how they should be used.
