Dickensian

Analysis
This close up shot signifies that this female figure is a main character, suggesting to the
audience that she is important. The fact that a focus pull is used so that the other female
(the maid) is out of focus, suggests that she has lower status within the drama, thus
allowing the audience to gage which characters are of importance.
This shot could also be shown to
show a stereotypical lady and maid,
where within society women can
be lower than each other, almost
adopting the idea that there is a
constant hierarchy system not just
with men and women but within
each gender.

This next mid-long shot depicts these men in a very stereotypical way; strong, well-dressed
and dominant. The element of dominance is also shown within the dialogue exchanged with
each character as coincidentally the taller male says release me when the other grabs his
arm, thus portraying each
characters societal status. The
characters costume also adds
to the stereotypical appearance
as they are seen with all black,
a connotation of power and
mystery. The use of props i.e
the cane is very significant as it
shows that they are of a high
class, with a lot of power.
This two shot shows the relationship between the two female characters, allowing the
audience to gain further knowledge on the media text. The appearance of both characters is
completely contrasted with that of the previous female character who wore tight revealing
clothing. This appearance suggests
that they have a low societal status
as well as portraying the idea that
they were seen as inferior to men.
However, this could contradict our
modern society where all though
there seems to be gender equality
in most

countries, women are still objectified by men due to their appearance as stated by Laura
Mulvey in her male gaze.
